This pretty, detached, ‘chocolate box’, thatched holiday cottage lies a few miles from the Dorset coast, on the edge of the New Forest National Park which is hugely popular for excellent walks, cycling and horse-riding routes. There’s also golf available nearby. The cottage is an ideal retreat for families, with many character features and a hot tub in the garden’s summer house. There are plenty of thoughtful extras for guests’ enjoyment, including six TVs, Bluetooth stereo and Wi-Wfi. Step through the door and you’ll be wowed by the beautiful interior of this lovely ground-floor holiday accommodation. Everywhere you look, you’ll be delighted with the well-thought-out living spaces and fantastic finishing touches. The open-plan living space provides a sociable space for film nights in front of the media centre and stove, and meals together reminiscing over the day’s adventures. The large sliding patio door leads to a decking area which can be a lovely sun trap on warmer days where you can enjoy an evening drink or a family barbecue. The decking, which is for sole use of guests, looks over the communal courtyard, which features a lovely lantern. For the grown-up kids, there is a snug mezzanine area reached by a fixed ladder, the perfect place for chilling out. There are two bedrooms, one with a kingsize bed and the second with a single bed and pull-out trundle that can be made up as two singles or a double bed; there is also a ‘secret’ sleeping space with cabin-style bed accessed by a fixed ladder in this room.
Bramley is a lovely large village in north Hampshire boasting its own railway station, which is just a 10-minute walk from Lantern Lodge and connects you to Basingstoke and Reading. The village also offers a great bakery and pub. You can reach the larger towns of Basingstoke, 5 miles away, and Reading, 10 miles away, quite easily and they boast an array of local amenities, shopping, and a choice of eateries. There is much to explore in this area including The Vyne, a historic National Trust property, less than a mile away, which hosts events and outdoor concerts in its stunning grounds. Silchester Roman ruins, less than 4 miles away - a great dog walk too; Wellington country park, an award-winning destination for a family day out, Wellington farm shop and café selling locally sourced produce, both within 4 miles, Highclere Castle; made famous by the filming of Downton Abbey is 16 miles away. The Cathedral and medieval city of Winchester are 24 miles away, Ascot with its famous Racecourse 22 miles away and Royal Windsor is 29 miles away.
With three Areas of Natural Beauty all within half an hour’s drive, you’ll be spoilt for choice for days out. The North Wessex Downs, the Chilterns and the South Downs National Park all provide magnificent scenery, outstanding walks and a selection of highly acclaimed pubs and country inns, and are considered as a natural playground for ramblers, cyclists, and nature enthusiasts alike. This is an idyllic holiday location in a quiet part of the New Forest National Park. With open heath, wild ponies and miles of footpaths right on the doorstep making these properties - Brook Barn (ref PDDA) and Meadow Barn (ref UKC2859) a really relaxing holiday retreat. Adjacent to one another and next to the owner’s home, they have been thoughtfully renovated, offering a good feeling of space with high vaulted beamed ceilings and open plan living space. Brook Barn has a cosy wood burner and Meadow Barn is accessed through the former stable/farmyard and has a very rustic feel and a unique carved staircase, made out of local trees and with iron railings to look like the branches of the tree! The first floor galleried bedroom area, with single bed, gives the impression of sleeping in a tree house! Both properties have a ground floor double bedroom and a first floor double bedroom with a single Z-bed for additional sleeping for children. There is also a cart on-site which offers fresh vegetables (honesty box).
This is a wonderful setting for discovering the New Forest, the area is abundant in wildlife, with deer, pheasants, badgers and birds and many scenic walks. The market town of Ringwood, with several restaurants, pubs, shops and leisure centre is about 4 miles, and there is also a brewery that offers regular tours. There is so much to discover in this area and the New Forest has miles of open heathland and woodland, where cattle and ponies roam, as well as being great for cycling, walking and riding. There are numerous picturesque New Forest villages, many of which serve traditional cream teas! Rockbourne is good for fly fishing and there is coarse fishing at Fordingbridge, as well as a water park, with various water sports including windsurfing and boating.
The properties are in a convenient location with road links to the cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury, and for a day out, why not visit Stonehenge or The Tank Museum at Bovington. They also have easy coastal connections to Christchurch Harbour and Sandbanks both within about 40-minute’s drive. Other attractions within easy reach include Beaulieu Motor Museum, Monkey World, Avon Heath Country Park, Moors Valley, and the New Forest Otter and Owl Park. Maritime Southampton and various other tourist attractions are within easy driving distance, with Ringwood just 4 miles away and sandy beaches at Poole and Bournemouth, 16 miles. This tastefully styled apartment makes an ideal retreat for couples or families. Steeped in history, it forms a wing of Gilbert White’s House which is a leading visitor attraction, and boasts 30 acres of beautifully landscaped, tranquil gardens and parkland, a shop, museum and café. Guests are invited to enjoy unlimited visits to the museum, which focuses on the lives and adventures of two members of the Oates Family, Captain Lawrence Oates and his uncle, Frank Oates, both pioneers and explorers of the natural world. The property has been restored (2018) and offers comfortable and welcoming accommodation set over three floors. Guests can access the grounds anytime, dogs are welcome if they are kept on a lead (during out of hours dogs can be off lead in our Ewell field).
Over 250 years ago, Selborne and its surrounding landscape inspired Gilbert White to write about his lifelong investigation of the natural world, producing his world-famous book, The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne, published in 1789. His book was important in shaping our everyday view of the relations between humans and nature. He was always a keen gardener who became closely interested in the natural world around him, and grew a wide range of traditional and experimental fruit and vegetables. He was the first person in this area to grow potatoes and began recording methodically what he sowed and reaped, the weather, temperature and other details. This he went on to call his ‘Garden Kalendar’.
The house that Gilbert White’s family moved into when he was about 7 or 8 years old, would have been a two up, two down, but over subsequent years, lots of extensions and additions were made, creating the house you see today. Descriptions in White’s own correspondence were used to recreate the rooms as they used to be and they include a chair he used at Oriel College, Oxford (loaned from the college), items of contemporary furniture, family portraits and bed hangings embroidered for him by his aunts. You can listen to a conversation Gilbert had with his sister-in-law in the old kitchen where you can learn more about his household and life in Selborne during Gilbert’s time.
Selborne also has a pottery, a pub and village shop and there is so much to discover in this popular part of Hampshire. The town of Alton is nearby, where there are plenty of restaurants and shops, as well as a mainline railway station, The Watercress Steam Railway and also Jane Austen’s House at nearby Chawton. Other places of interest to visit include Portsmouth with the Spinnaker Tower, HMS Warrior and HMS Victory, as well as waterside dining, designer shopping and ferry trips to the Isle of Wight. Also within easy driving distance are Winchester Cathedral, King Arthur’s Round Table, Southampton with its maritime history, The New Forest, historic Chichester with cathedral, festival theatre, Goodwood Racecourse, beaches at The Witterings or Hayling Island, Marwell Zoo, Paultons Park with Peppa Pig World and Birdworld. This lovely, light and airy, detached bungalow stands in an elevated position and enjoys super panoramic views over The Solent to the Isle of Wight and beyond. Directly opposite is a pebbled beach with cafés and skate park, it makes the ideal base for all to enjoy a beach holiday, to explore the area or simply relax. The open plan living space has an abundance of natural light due to the huge window which spans across the front of the bungalow, from here is the ideal place to relax and watch yachts, cruise liners and other nautical activity. This lovely property has three bedrooms, one king-size, one double and one twin, along with a family bathroom, plus an additional toilet. There is an enclosed private garden and private parking to the rear of the property and a large front garden, both perfect for entertaining and having barbecues. If it’s a pub lunch that you are looking for, there is the highly recommended one located only a 10-minute walk away. There is also another four local pubs within a 20-minute walk.
The pebbled beach opposite is great for swimming (if brave enough to take the plunge!) and fishing. As the tide goes out you’ll be able to spot adults and children in the rockpools crabbing. Lee-on-the-Solent is the home of the hovercraft, find out the history for yourself at the Hovercraft Museum, which is open to the public on Saturdays. Along with this there is the local St Faiths Church of England Parish and Lee-on-the-Solent High Street which, has an abundance of local businesses including a bakery, coffee shops, wine merchants, beauty salons, vintage shops and many more!
Gosport is the next town along which has a foot passenger ferry (every 15 minutes, or 7 minutes during peak times). It takes about 4 minutes on the ferry to get across to the historic Portsmouth harbour with its cosmopolitan feel and extensive shopping including designer outlets, as well as waterside dining, a comedy club, leisure complex, nightclubs, museums, galleries and city tours by foot or boat. Whilst over in Portsmouth visit the Spinnaker Tower for the views or enjoy a meal at the cloud or waterfront café’s, visit the Olde Towne, Gunwharf Quays, the dockyard where you can visit HMS Victory and HMS Warrior. You can also take a ferry across to the Isle of Wight for a great day out!

Nestled alongside ancient woodland, the lodge sits at the top of a large grazing field with a variety of animals wandering past from sheep and their lambs to calves and horses. The animals are separated from the grounds of the lodge but provide a charming outlook as they amble cheerily through the meadows. Visitors are welcome to witness the farming activities on the owner’s farm. Lambing, feeding lambs or calves can be arranged on request. When you take a second to stop and listen, the air is infused with a soothing babble of the Brechan brook and the chatter of woodland birds in the trees.
The site’s natural value is reinforced by the blossoming population of barn owls and red kites. Endangered red kites are seen flying daily overhead from their nesting sites in the woods behind, while at night hear the hypnotic hoot of owls hunting in the darkness. The natural murmurings of this wild location offer a sense of wild serenity, which is seldom found.

Shorefield Country Park is a family-run holiday park on the south coast near the New Forest. The on-site facilities (by leisure pass purchased from the owner) include indoor and outdoor swimming pools, manned by trained lifeguards, an outdoor adventure playground, spa, steam room, sauna, gym, tennis courts and crazy golf. Daytime activities include bingo for children, the Mini Forester’s Club with activities designed for children upto 4 years old so they can have fun and get messy. The Forester’s Club provides lots of fun and games for children between 5 and 11 years old. At Family Time, join the team for some great activities that are suitable for and involve the whole family. There is a mini disco with songs and dancing for the little ones. Other activities include tribute acts and live singing, Play Your Cards Right and a fishing lake (by the lodge, rod licence required). There is an arcade which has the old fashioned penny drop games, and ancient and fairy woodland walks. Enoy the facilities offered at Shorefield’s sister park, Oakdene, which is approximately 8 miles away and which has an Escape Room adventure.

There’s lot of things to see and do in the area, with the beautiful New Forest National Park on your doorstep, where you’ll find wild ponies, cows, donkeys, deer and occasionally pigs. It is a beautiful area to explore during any season, either on foot, by bike (can be hired at Burley) or on horseback at the local riding stables.

Milford is fantastic village with a small supermarket, superb bakery, chemist and an array of tempting eateries for all ages, including Indian, Thai and Italian restaurants, plus an award-winning fish restaurant. There are also a couple of bars and good local pubs. Kayaking and watersports can be arranged from the village. Leisure passes to use the amenities can be purchased direct from the owners after you have booked your stay. There is also an on-site shop selling an extensive range of goods.
