    Two of the most popular towns in the Lake District, Bowness, a 35-minute walk, and Windermere, a 20-minute walk, both offer a great selection of independent shops, cafes, restaurants, and pubs to enjoy. In addition, Bowness has some great local attractions such as The World Of Beatrix Potter attraction, The Jetty Museum and cinema.
    It is also one of the access points for ferry rides across Lake Windermere. Slightly further afield there is Ambleside and within the local area there is a whole host of outdoor activities to choose from including sailing, paddle boarding, tree top trek, climbing, archery, and plenty more. For those who prefer fewer active pursuits, you are spoilt for choice with National Trust locations, Garden Centres, Museums, Steam railways and animal parks. There is truly something for everyone close to this location and we haven’t even mentioned the famous scenery and views all over the Lake District.

    Historic Appleby enjoys a reputation as one of the prettiest market towns. Sitting alongside the River Eden, it offers something for everyone – history buffs will enjoy the architecture evident in the town’s buildings, and Appleby Castle, open for visits, outside theatre events, comedy nights and outdoor cinema events throughout the year. Shops, cafés and restaurants offer local crafts alongside local cheeses! Look out for High Cross on Boroughgate, which is the site of the original cheese market. For train enthusiasts, or those looking to enjoy a journey through the stunning surrounding areas, Appleby is on the Settle to Carlisle scenic railway line. Steam trains run weekly through the summer months and the Flying Scotsman passes through on the line from time to time – a sight to behold.

    Besides the immediate area, the North Pennines and Alston are just minutes from the cottage. The spectacular route up Hartside Pass reaches a summit of almost 2000 feet with wonderful views of the Lake District, Pennine fells and down onto the Eden Valley. The Yorkshire Dales and High Force in Teesdale are also a short drive away. The Northern Lake District including Ullswater and the villages dotting the lake shores, are well worth a visit and just half an hour’s drive away, with popular market towns of Keswick and Penrith offering something for everyone and a fabulous mix of retailers, cafés, traditional inns and international restaurants.

Dalton railway station gives easy access to Barrow-in-Furness, or in the southerly direction, to Grange-over-Sands, Arnside and Lancaster.
