Close by is Hickling Broad, with a nature reserve that links to the Norfolk Broad’s unique topography of reed-lined waterways, famous for their good coarse fishing, boating and rich variety of wildlife, especially waterfowl. Also 3 miles drive away are the glorious sandy beaches of Sea Palling and Waxham, often visited by seals. Visit Wroxham (10 miles), the capital of the Norfolk Broads, with its waterside cafés, restaurants, shops and daily river trips available. Enjoy a trip through wonderful countryside along the Bure Valley Steam Railway, with opportunity to jump on and off at the riverside villages of Coltishall and Buxton or stay on board and travel to the pretty market town of Aylsham, with eateries, market square with shops and cafes. Daily boat hire is available at nearby Hickling Broad and Potter Heigham, ½ mile and 3½ miles away respectively.
Cyclists and walkers can enjoy the quiet country lanes and trails within the surrounding area. Nearby attractions include many National Trust properties including Blickling and Felbrigg Hall and Horsey Windpump. Visit the seaside resort of Cromer (20 miles) with a promenade and pier, and Sheringham (25 miles), home to the North Norfolk Steam Railway. The city of Norwich (18 miles), with its cathedral, castle, museums, galleries, restaurants, cinema, theatre and shopping with two malls and market square is within easy driving distance. For another great day out, visit Horsey Gap (National Trust) where you can walk on the sand dunes and see the seals and pups on the beach (November to February). Sandy beach 3 miles. A pub serving good food, within walking distance. While there is no shop in Hickling, Stalham (3 miles) offers many shops including a large supermarket.

Created to provide a relaxing and stylish environment, and each with their own hot tub (NOTE: for NEW bookings received from January 2024 note that the hot tub will only be prepared for use from 1st April to 30th September each year) and sauna (leisure towels are also provided), this is a perfect holiday location for family celebrations or a get together, whatever the season. The southern aspects of both cottages look over a valley with no habitation in sight, and the night sky is incredible when clear. There are excellent walks and circular routes from the doorstep, free from cars, for both walkers and cyclists. Cowslip Cottage (ref UKC2457) and Meadowsweet Cottage (ref UKC2458) are semi-detached properties and are hidden away, yet situated in the pretty village of Swardeston, a short 5-mile drive from the excellent city of Norwich. Swardeston is the birth place of Edith Cavell, probably the most famous woman to be killed during World War I and remembered around the world for all her tireless and selfless work she undertook whilst working as a nurse, before being executed on 12 October 1915. Edith’s portrait hangs in her memory on the east stained glass window of St Mary’s church and is worthy of a visit. Enjoy fresh bread, pastries and cakes from the village bakery, or visit the local pub, under 1 mile away, which serves good food. There is also a farm shop for fresh veg and fruit as well as a newsagents and butchers. Swardeston Common is very popular with walkers, also from here you can watch the local cricket matches played in front of the pavilion.
Visit the fabulous north Norfolk coastline with its pretty coastal villages and glorious beaches, and explore the famous Norfolk Broads. Wroxham, 16 miles away is known as the capital of the Norfolk Broads, where you will find daily boat hire, river trips, waterside restaurants, cafés and shops. Enjoy a great day out with the children at BeWILDerwood at Horning, a treetop adventure park, Dinosaur Park at Lenwade and Pensthorpe Nature Park. Explore the Suffolk Heritage Coast and the popular seaside towns of Aldebugh and Southwold. The historical city of Norwich is 5 miles, with its cathedrals, museums, theatre, excellent shopping and cosmopolitan cafés. The seaside village of Winterton-on-Sea has an excellent sandy beach backed by dunes and plenty of shops and restaurants. Thetford Forest is ideal for tree top adventures at Go Ape, designated circular walks and cycle trails graded for different abilities. Nestled within the quiet village of Gimingham, but under 2 miles from the coast, Hall Farm Barns have been thoughtfully furnished and equipped to ensure guests have everything they need for a great stay. Light and airy throughout, these semi-detached barns can be booked individually or as a group for those wishing to accommodate large numbers while still retaining some privacy. The largest of the barns, The Great South Barn (UKC2527), sleeps twelve and benefits from four bathrooms, three of which are en-suite. Just as impressive, The Great North Barn (ref UKC2526), sleeps ten and has a glass ceiling area that is just perfect for gazing at blue skies and stars alike. Close by lies the seaside village of Mundesley which offers a lovely sandy beach, a firm favourite with the locals but something of an undiscovered gem compared to its larger neighbour Cromer. Do make time to visit Cromer though, as here you will find a celebrated Edwardian seafront, a long promenade to stroll along and a famous pier, which often offers end of pier shows. Both seaside resorts also offer lots of places where you can eat and drink, and Cromer also has a cinema and Amazonia Zoo.

Close by also lies the gateway to the Norfolk Broads, Wroxham, which offers lots of attractions, including the opportunity to hire a day boat or join a charter as it glides through these famous waterways. Here you will find the finest standing example of a Norman castle in the whole of the UK along with a magnificent Norman cathedral, numerous museums, theatres, art galleries and a full range of leisure activities. The city boasts numerous lanes and alleys full of quirky shops as well as two indoor malls, numerous cafés and fine dining restaurants. The surrounding countryside provides endless opportunities for cycling and walking, for a change of pace, head to Thetford Forest and High Lodge, a recreational site with walks and cycle routes along with more challenging mountain bike trails, and Go Ape treetop adventures. In just 30 minutes you can also be at Wroxham, the gateway to the Norfolk Broads, where you can charter a day boat or join an organised tour. The North Norfolk coast can be reached with a 40 minute drive, or you can explore the east coast at picturesque Winterton, where you can see grey seals in their natural environment and Great Yarmouth, where you will discover all the fun of fair and glorious beaches. Head south to Southwold with its Victorian pier, or even a spot of crabbing at Walberswick, all under 30 miles from the Coach House. Add in several National Trust properties, excellent museums and birdwatching activities, zoos, golf, fishing, salt, fresh and game, and you will soon see why this part of Norfolk is so popular with guests who return year after year, and you will be sure to return to The Old Hall Coach House too. This superb wing of Grade II listed Islington Hall, which is adjacent to the owner’s home, has been refurbished for 2018 and benefits from a large garden and a private hot tub to sit back and relax in after a day spent exploring the area. There is plenty for all the family to see and do, from Her Majesty’s country retreat at Sandringham, 20 minutes by car, and the sandy beaches of Heacham and Hunstanton to the medieval town of King’s Lynn, which is just a short drive away. Hunstanton is a traditional seaside resort and offers good days out for all the family, as does Heacham, which has been a seaside resort for over 150 years. For children there is Church Farm, 10 miles south of King’s Lynn, where you can meet the animals and enjoy refreshment in the farm café/restaurant. Snettisham is great for spotting the birdlife that inhabits this stretch of the Norfolk coastline and you can often see thousands of wading birds in the spring, or sit and watch the birds on the lagoon islands. The Cart Shed (ref UK10576) is a wonderful, semi-detached barn conversion, also with its own hot tub, and has uninterrupted, picturesque Norfolk countryside views. It has contemporary, first floor open plan living and has a raised decked area outside which offers the opportunity for simply relaxing or dining al fresco whilst enjoying the views across the fields with its visiting wildlife. The hot tub is tucked underneath the decking and screened to retain its privacy, but still benefits from countryside views.
The Tack Room (ref UK31753) has been newly converted during 2021, beautifully fusing traditional and contemporary design to offer a very comfortable holiday home. It is situated in an ideal location to explore the excellent sandy beach of the North Norfolk Coast and the Norfolk Broads, which are both within a 30-minute drive. Cromer boasts a pier, with a carnival week which is held in August and, weather permitting, a spectacular New Year’s Day celebration, complete with fireworks.

The Sandringham Estate, which is the Queen’s country residence, with its Jacobean-style house, museum, superb gardens and park, is open to the public when the Royal family is not in residence. The park has links to public footpaths and bridal ways including Weavers Way, winding 61 miles through the North Norfolk countryside, with Dilham canal and the famous Norfolk Broads within walking distance. One of the best ways to enjoy the estate is on horse back, and the equestrian centre by the park entrance is where you can hire a horse for the day or house your own horse, with a variety of livery options available. The centre is also registered with Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) charity.
The market town of North Walsham, 5½ miles, has a good selection of shops, supermarkets, bank, a weekly market, bowling alley, leisure centre with swimming pool, restaurants, and cafés. Worstead church is a superb 14th-century building, full of historic and architectural interest. Wroxham, the capital of the Norfolk Broads is 6½ miles for daily boat hire and river trips, waterside restaurants, cafés and shops.
