The Tumbling Sailor’s name derives from an old pub which was previously on the site called The Tumbling Sailors Inn. It was demolished in the early 1900s. This marvellous Shropshire cottage offers groups of up to six a wonderful stay located on the bank of the River Severn, and in the heart of Jackfield, you’re only one mile from the Ironbridge Gorge.
The cottage has a stylish interior, with modern features, and little touches of rural charm. You’ll love the comfy furnishings, oak beams, and exposed brick. A great spot to socialise with your loved ones is in the open plan living/dining room with comfy sofas, views across the garden and complete with a wood burner. You can stay toasty and enjoy a glass of wine long into the evening. This room also has a large wooden dining table with plenty of space for your entire group, and if that’s not enough there’s a conservatory with more seating to relax in and enjoy a book or cup of tea first thing. The property’s modern kitchen has all you need to cook up lovely meals, including a large Range oven.
The three bedrooms all sit on the first floor. The master boasts a kingsize bed, whilst the second bedroom has a double bed, and the third two singles for all your sleeping arrangements covered. There’s plenty of space and all have been decorated in calming tones but still showcasing that homely cottage feel. A large family bathroom with a luxurious corner bathtub and shower completes the first floor. Outside the River Severn sits at the bottom of the garden, offering you beautiful views and sounds from the river, and ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding. There are steps leading down, along the way you’ll find lovely seating areas, and impressive gardens great on those sunny days. The garden is enclosed so that your furry friends can roam freely and there’s lots of space for everyone to enjoy a meal outside.
You’re located near to the wonderful village of Ironbridge, it’s just a quick, 15-minute walk from the cottage where you’ll find quaint cafes, great pubs and restaurants and independent shops to explore. The Ironbridge Gorge UNESCO World Heritage site is a now a maze of footpaths, bridleways, and country lanes. Whilst the village is famous for being home of the world’s first iron-built bridge, built between 1777-79 a collection of ten industrial and Victorian themed museums makes up the Ironbridge Museums Trust, including the exciting Blists Hill Victorian Village. Within driving distance are the popular historical towns of Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth, Much Wenlock and Ludlow, as well as the Wroxeter Roman City, the Severn valley Railway, the RAF Cosford Museum, and many National Trust properties. Guests can also enjoy a private enclosed rear garden, a separate, small walled courtyard, and it is located on one of the most prominent streets of this charming medieval town. Ludlow is overshadowed by its own majestic castle, as it was once, like York, a seat of Government in Tudor and Stuart England. Now hosting the famous food festivals and events throughout the year, there is always a lively atmosphere here. It has a reputation for fine foods, award-winning restaurants, speciality and antique shops and even a racecourse. An excellent base to explore the unrivalled countryside for picnicking and walking or nearby towns such as Bridgnorth and Bewdley (Severn Valley Railway), Ironbridge, Much Wenlock, Church Stretton, Tenbury Wells and Leominster. The cathedral city of Hereford with its chained library and Mappa Mundi are all within a short drive, as are historic houses such as Witley Court, Berrington Hall, Croft Castle, Stokesay Castle and Powis Castle on the Welsh borders. Acton Scott, an historic working farm and the Secret Hills Discovery Centre are all just a few of the nearby attractions, so you will never be short of something to see. Whitchurch town centre is within walking distance and includes an array of excellent shops, pubs and restaurants in the town. It’s home to a restaurant recognised by the Michelin Guide and awarded a place in the 2020 guide. The delightful market town has many splendid buildings from medieval, Tudor and Georgian times, all dominated by St. Alkmund’s Church. Internationally renowned for its clock production dating back to the 1650s, Whitchurch is known as ’the Home of Tower Clocks’, and a fine example can be seen on one of the barns.
Attractions close by, include Ellesmere with its beautiful lakes, 11 miles, a variety of National Trust mansions and gardens, and the historical city of Chester with its excellent shopping and famous races, 25 miles, with the Blue Planet Aquarium close by. Chester Zoo, as seen on TV’s ’Secret Life of a Zoo’, is only 30 minutes away and is one of Europe’s largest zoos, helping endangered animals from all over the world.
Other places of interest include Hawkstone Follies, Cheshire Ice Cream Farm, BeWILDerwood, Alderford Lake, RAF Cosford, Fenn’s and Whixall Mosses, and the incredible Ironbridge Gorge.
