Explore the area on foot via the network of footpaths. From the rear of the pub take the footpath alongside the estuary that follows the old railway line, through a nature reserve, to the beach at Warblerswick. Or head inland from the recreated Blythburgh station to Wenhaston and beyond.
The delights of Southwold, RSPB Minsmere, Dunwich Heath, Thorpeness and Aldeburgh are just a short drive away, as are Valley Farm Vineyards at Wisset and the cheese room at Friday Street farm shop near Farnham is a must.

Situated opposite is Nethergate Brewery which brews award-winning, flavoursome beer, gin and has a bar and has a large outside seating area (dogs welcome) with plenty of tables, they also supply local and popular beverages with a shop incorporated. Various food wagons and live music visit the site usually at weekends (although they close by 8pm).
Close by is Long Melford Country Park, a perfect place to unwind and walk the dog with its small lakes, wooded areas, and viewing points beside the River Stour. Long Melford is without a doubt an attractive place to visit and has been voted as one of Suffolk’s most desirable villages. As the name implies, the village has a very long high street filled with medieval buildings, and a plethora of antique shops, tea rooms, restaurants, and boutiques. It also has some fabulous art galleries which specialise in contemporary fine art, furniture, and glass. Well worth a visit is Melford Hall, owned by the National Trust, once visited by Queen Elizabeth I, and holds connections to the children’s author Beatrix Potter. The beautiful, medieval Holy Trinity Church stands at the top of the great green, built in the 15th century at a time of growing prosperity among the local cloth and wool merchants. Another gem is Kentwell Hall with its long avenue leading up to this magnificent building.
Places to visit include the market towns of Bury St Edmunds, a 25-minute drive, Hadleigh, a 22-minute drive, Lavenham, a 12-minute drive, and Sudbury, a 6-minute drive, which also has rail links to London and Newmarket. The famous university city of Cambridge is an hour’s drive away. For fun at the coast and an excellent sandy beach you have Brightlingsea, Mersea and slightly further afield is the Suffolk Heritage Coast, where you will find the seaside gems of Southwold and Aldeburgh. You can also visit the lighthouse - this is a distinctive landmark at the centre of the town and has been guiding vessels into the historical harbour since the late 1800’s. A great location for nature lovers and twitchers, just a 25-minute drive to RSPB Minsmere where you can discover some of the UK’s rarest wildlife and enjoy family-friendly activities.

The village has a great local pub which can be reached on foot from your accommodation, and a small village shop and brewery. The English Spirit Distillery (just 5 minutes away) or Tuffon Hall (also 5 minutes away), both offer wine tours and are excellent to pick up some local English wine. You can even sample Toppesfield’s very own award-winning wine during your stay too. Great Yeldham, Sible Hedingham and Castle Hedingham are all less than 10 minutes away by car.
Twelve minutes in the opposite direction and you will find Finchingfield, its famous village green and duck pond together with three pubs and eateries. Further afield to the north but still less than an hour’s journey, you’ll find the wonderful city of Cambridge. Located on the River Cam and home to the world recognised university. You may enjoy punting along the river. For all you shopaholics, you’ll be pleased to know that Braintree Designer Village is less than 30 minutes away. Fancy a day beside the sea? The Essex coast at Clacton on Sea or Mersea Island can both be reached in approximately 1 hour.
