Situated on the Pennine Way, on the outskirts of Byrness Village, close to the Northumberland National Park and only 5 miles from the Scottish border, this is a great area for walkers. Byrness House is also located in the middle of a gold award Dark Sky Area in the darkest patch, perfect for astronomers and star gazers, and only 12 miles from Keilder observatory and park. An ideal base for friends and family to get together for holidays or special occasions. Outdoor pursuits are a huge attraction in the area, and a favourite location for walkers and adventure seekers. For golfers, there is a golf course 17 miles away in the nearby village of Bellingham. The well equipped farmhouse kitchen, large dining room and living room ensures a relaxing evening after exploring the many visitor attractions in what is reputedly the friendliest county in England. Explore the heritage coastline with coastal walks starting in the village or visit Alnwick with its majestic castle and one of the biggest water gardens in Europe, 7 miles away. Amble harbour and marina are 5 miles, whilst Bamburgh Castle, Dunstanburgh Castle and Seahouses are around a 30-minute drive away. Boat trips to the Farne Islands leave from Seahouses to see the puffins and seals, or you can take a trip to Holy Island when the tide is out by driving over the causeway. Beach and golf course 2 minutes’ walk. There is on road parking, and you can sometimes manage to park opposite the cottage where there is space for three cars. Delicatessen, post office, shop and pubs, cafés and restaurants 25 yards.

Take a trip across the causeway (at low tide) to Holy Island, a few miles further up the rugged and unspoilt coastline.

Newonstead Bothy is the ideal relaxing hideaway for a well-deserved holiday or short break, where you can completely switch off and unwind. Set on the owner’s upland hill farm, and slightly off the beaten track, it’s idyllic for couples wishing to cycle and walk, with or without a dog. Whilst the location is set in the countryside, you really only are a couple of miles from the main road network so exploring this beautiful county is easy from Newonstead Bothy. The well-equipped kitchen has seating for four, just in case you want to invite friends over, and there is a fabulous large wall map of the county so you can plan all your day trips. On entering to the property, there is a large porch for storing all your outdoor equipment and outside is a storage area for bicycles. The owners provide a welcome tea tray and have added maps which shows which fields and walks you can have access too. In spring the owners are happy to show you the lambs and answer any of your questions.
The wonderful National Trust Property of Wallington Hall and Gardens is only 5 miles away. Matfen Hall, Spa and Golf Centre is only 10 miles, and you can drive down to Corbridge in 20 minutes. This is a lovely old Roman town with plenty of lovely pubs and cafés. The pick-your-own fruit farm and café is only half an hour for you to enjoy in summer. You really can travel all over the county from Newonstead Bothy, then come home and relax in this lovely location.

Harbottle is a welcoming village situated only 8 miles from the pretty picture perfect small town of Rothbury, found nestled at the foot of the Simonside Hills, sitting on the banks of the trout and salmon rich River Coquet. The Upper Coquet Valley is a popular destination for walkers and cyclists. It offers many facilities including tea rooms, pubs, shops, restaurants, cafés and a riverside 18-hole golf course.

The National Trust property at Cragside is a popular visitor attraction and is full of original and interesting objects with stunning gardens. The historic market town of Alnwick with its dramatic castle, which is home to the Duke of Northumberland and used for some scenes in Harry Potter and Downton Abbey, is 20 miles east. The Alnwick Garden is also well worth a visit close to the castle which was founded by the Duchess. The Heritage Coastline, recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is a lovely day out peppered with castles and miles of golden beaches.
