Quails Nest is a charming, detached cottage situated in the picturesque hamlet of Edlingham. Constructed in 2018, the accommodation is immaculately presented throughout and all conveniently located on ground floor level. The open plan living space enjoys a bright and airy ambience with superb far-reaching rural views, and both double bedrooms have the convenience of en-suites.
Edlingham is nestled equidistant between Rothbury to the west and the historic market town of Alnwick to the east; both being around 6 miles away. Edlingham has its own medieval castle and 11th-century church in its grounds. This beautiful location is regularly used in TV and film sets; it’s the location of the Hobbit latest promotional film poster and some scenes for the ITV drama series, Beowulf, were also filmed here.
A short drive west brings you to Rothbury, snuggled at the foot of the Simonside and Lordenshaw Hills. It straddles the banks of the trout and salmon-rich River Coquet, where a licence and permit for fishing can be obtained locally. This is a popular destination for cyclists and walkers and is known as the ‘Gateway to the Northumberland National Park, there are many amenities available including tea rooms, pubs, shops and a riverside 18-hole golf course. The National Trust site of Cragside, once home to Lord Armstrong and the first home to be lit by hydro-electricity, sits within 1000 acres and is an interesting visitor attraction only 4 miles west from Quails Nest.
The bustling market town of Alnwick boasts its own dramatic castle, which is home to the Duke of Northumberland (and film academy for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry) has a wide array of facilities, 6 miles east. Visit Alnwick Garden with its spectacular Cascade Waterfall and restaurant incorporated within the largest tree house in Europe.
Quails Nest is an excellent choice for those seeking a tranquil base with lovely rural views and gives easy access to explore the beautiful 20-mile stretch of Heritage coastline designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the east and the wild and lonely expanses of the heather-capped Cheviot Hills to the west. A lovely walk to St Cuthbert’s Cave is only a few miles from Belford where the Lindisfarne (Holy Island) monks reputedly took St Cuthbert’s body in AD875 following the Viking road on Holy Island. Nearby Budle Bay has thousands of waders on the tidal lagoon a beautiful sight looking over to the island. A local bus takes you to the popular coastal villages of Beadnell, Seahouses and Bamburgh should you wish to leave your car behind. Whether you explore the coast, the countryside or entwine both, Swan’s nest is perfectly located and a cosy welcoming base to return to after a day exploring this super friendly county, reputedly the friendliest county in England, steeped in history and folklore.

The historic town of Hexham with its pretty Abbey and cobbled streets is only 25 miles away. Head north over the border into Scotland and discover some of the Scottish towns and villages. Nearby, Bellingham has a post office and shops, as well as a golf course, and is only a few miles. This is one of the best wildlife watching spots in the Northeast. Right next to the beach, it offers fantastic views across the length of Druridge Bay and is internationally renowned for its birds.
You can also travel inland only a few miles to the market town of Alnwick and Alnwick Castle that has been the filming location in a variety of films, including the exterior of Hogwarts in Harry Potter films. The castle also has a set of beautiful, landscaped gardens to explore, including the famous Poison Garden. It is said that "Postman Pats’s Greendale" is based on Wooler, being the gateway to the Cheviots. With a lovely sitting area to admire the view, the garden is an ideal place to relax and enjoy some down time. Wooler is on the edge of the National Park and is only 15 miles to Berwick on Tweed, with a beautiful beach and plenty of shops and history. All of the Scottish Borders are easily explored from here, with Coldstream only 14 miles and Kelso a little further. Edinburgh is only 90 minutes away.

Northumberland is such a diverse and friendly county with the beautiful Heritage Coast only 15 miles away to Bamburgh where you can follow the trail and take in the history making a lovely day trip. Holy Island Causeway is only 14 miles where the Lindisfarne Gospels were kept (check the tides). The location really is ideal for exploring in all directions of Northumberland and Scotland’s Border counties. Wooler itself has that country feeling while still having a market town buzz, combining home comforts with countryside. You can be hiking the Cheviot Hills in the morning and having a local beer on an evening. St Cuthbert’s Way walk passes via Wooler, a 62-mile route follows the ancient pilgrimage route, followed by St Cuthbert and many other monks between Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in north Northumberland. The Alnwick Garden is also well worth a visit. The Heritage Coastline, recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is less than 20 miles east making Havannah Cottage an excellent base for exploring the many delights across north Northumberland, and also giving easy access to the Scottish Borders. Beach 20 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 9 miles.

A spacious cottage of contemporary and traditional design, Bertram Cottage has been refurbished throughout in 2019, with great attention to detail. This terraced cottage displays some exposed stone work, and is only a couple of minutes’ walk from a café and a very friendly village pub. The property is perfect for couples or a small family, and has a charming enclosed rear seating area. Dogs are welcome here, and there are plenty of walking paths nearby.
The pretty little village of Felton is only a few miles from Alnwick Castle and Gardens, where you can explore some history. Fans of Harry Potter will also discover interesting facts there, since the castle was used in some film scenes. Located midway between Alnwick and Morpeth, Bertram Cottage makes a great base from which to explore this county, which was voted the best county to holiday in at the 2018 British Tourism Awards.
Felton is very easily accessed from the A1 making touring around easy. A great golf course at Burgham Park is only 3 miles away, and the Heritage coast is nearby with miles of golden sandy beaches to explore. Northumberland has more castles than any other county in England, and all are easily reached from the cottage. The historic Roman town of Corbridge is only 40 miles away, where you can discover Hadrian’s Wall and see where the Romans lived. Morpeth is only a few miles distant and has a great collection of cafés, pubs and some lovely shops, as well as a riverside with rowing boats. The fishing harbour of Craster is only 15 miles, where you can treat yourself to famous Craster smoked kippers. A little further and you will come to Bamburgh and Holy Island (check tides). Amble is close by and has a fabulous Sunday market where you can find friendly locals and stock up on your fish or meat. After the market, you may like to stop at one of the lovely fish and chip shops or local restaurants, or even treat yourself to an ice cream at the shop along the way.
