Birch Cottage has a multi-fuel burner for a warm and welcoming interior, perfect for relaxing after a day exploring. Relax amid spectacular and dramatic scenery in this gloriously unspoilt part of Northumberland. Lying within the Northumberland National Park and enjoying panoramic views over Whitelee Fell National Nature Reserve, the cottages are former shepherd’s cottages on the owner’s sheep farm, renovated to a very good standard and retaining lots of character. Oak Cottage and Birch Cottage have beamed living room ceilings and all three have inglenook fireplaces with multi-fuel stoves for a warm and cosy atmosphere as well as power showers in the bathroom. There are wildlife cameras which feed live pictures direct to the flatscreen TV in each cottage, so you can watch barn owls, badgers and other wildlife. The area is rich in wildlife and ideal for walkers. Whitelee Farm is an idyllic base for exploring the Roman wall, Lindisfarne, Alnwick Castle, Kielder Forest Park and the Scottish borders. Newcastle and Edinburgh are within an easy drive. Shopping in Otterburn and Jedburgh, both 15 minutes away.

The cottage is ideally placed for visiting the Roman forts along the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, including Housesteads and Vindolanda, or Chesters where you can explore how the Romans lived. After you have finished donning your toga and training to be a centurion, you can retire to modern day comfort of Hadrian’s Garden Villa, relax in front of the wood burner and look out over the beautiful views in the open plan living space with decorative oak plank flooring. As night draws in, it is worth stepping outside onto the south-facing patio, surrounded by planting and including views over the valley, to enjoy the non-light polluted dark skies and be stunned by all the stars. There is a number of good golf courses within easy reach, including Hexham, which is described as one of the finest in the north of England, and Brampton which is the ‘jewel in the crown’ of Cumbria. There is storage for your bike at the property, so you can make the most of the local rugged landscapes. The landscape is equally good on foot, or to walk your dog, why not take a wander to Sycamore Gap and see the most photographed, iconic tree from the movie ‘Robin Hood’? On the way back, grab a pint or something to eat at the local inn.

Nearby towns include Hexham, a popular, historic market town which boasts a stunning abbey, the oldest gaol in the country, and an abundance of shops, restaurants and pubs. In addition, why not visit the beautiful Roman town of Corbridge or its fort, browse its boutique shops, art galleries and antique shops, or take a stroll along the river. Also within easy reach is Haltwhistle, the ‘Geographic Centre of Britain’, which has a sports centre and outdoor heated swimming pools, and Burn Gorge. Henshaw, ½ mile, and Hexham, 10 miles. Each detached lodge also offers a private, 6-seater hot tub (Coria Lodge, ref UKC4416, has a hoist rail system installed) and garden area with garden furniture for sitting out and enjoying the location. These properties are for families and couple bookings only, bookings for party purposes such as stag or hen parties are not accepted.
Perfectly situated near to the banks of the River Derwent with a boat house and fishing permits available for a small fee, guests who enjoy river fishing will be spoilt for choice. Also just a few hundred yards from the Derwent Walkway as well as a variety of established public footpaths, walks and cycling routes, there is no better base for enjoying and exploring the local area. Then leading further out into County Durham, Northumberland, the Northumberland National Park and the stunning North Pennines. Only half a mile from the village of Ebchester, there are plenty of amenities and facilities right on the doorstep. A local village pub, excellent restaurants and a village shop are at the heart of this thriving community and within easy walking distance from the lodges. Golf lovers will be able to book a place on the famous Slaley Hall course just 15 miles away or the closer course at Consett which is just 3 miles away. The cathedral city of Durham, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is only 15 miles away and well worth a visit.
Officially located in Northumberland yet also on the border of County Durham, there are plenty of places to visit and explore within an easy radius. Steeped in history, the county of Northumberland is home to the historic Hadrian’s Wall which spans 73 miles from coast to coast and is now recognised as a World Heritage Site. The market town of Hexham is a 15 mile drive away and offers plenty of facilities and amenities including a leisure centre, bowling alley, supermarkets, shops and a farmers market, as well as the historic attractions including Hexham Abbey and Hexham Old Gaol.
