Seahouses is a traditional seaside village with a wide array of facilities a mere gentle stroll from Farne Cottage. Enjoy wandering around the harbour and watch the trawlers return with their daily catch. Take a boat trip to the Farne Islands, famous for its bird sanctuaries and seal colony, and try your luck at fishing. Or enjoy a round of golf on the links golf course and admire the spectacular views across the sweeping coastline, north to Bamburgh, south to Beadnell and out to sea towards the Farne Islands on the horizon. There are several shops, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants within this friendly village, and horse riding can be arranged on its outskirts. Only a couple of miles north of Farne Cottage is the picture postcard village of Bamburgh, protected by its dramatic fortress, which commands the power and presence of the seasoned film set it regularly becomes, and where the Grace Darling Museum is worth a visit.
The wide expanse of golden and often empty sandy beaches this region is renowned for, is perfect for a romantic stroll to feel the sand between your toes and watch the waves lap against the shoreline. The tidal island of Lindisfarne, locally known as Holy Island and the birthplace of Christianity, can be viewed from here too. A little further north is the bird sanctuary at Budle Bay, and at low tide a vast expanse of mud flats is the home to countless thousands of sea and land birds making this location a haven for bird watchers. The sweep of golden sands at Beadnell Bay is popular with water sport enthusiasts, only two miles to the south. The elegant Georgian town of Berwick, which straddles the salmon-rich river Tweed, is 17 miles north and the historic market town of Alnwick, 12 miles inland, with its own magnificent castle, offers many facilities. Alnwick Garden is a popular visitor attraction with its grand cascading waterfall, and restaurant set within the largest tree house in Europe. This ideally located holiday home offers a superb base from which to explore the magnificent Heritage Coast, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Visit Craster, famous for its smoked kippers and glorious walk along the cliff-top to Dunstanburgh Castle. It is only a few miles from Alnwick, with its famous castle used in Harry Potter and in Downton Abbey. Only a few minutes walk from Warkworth Castle and the pretty village centre, this small, comfortable, detached holiday studio is an ideal base for exploring this friendly county. It is set within the friendly owners’ grounds yet offers privacy. With a ground floor kitchen and first floor lounge and bedroom area, this quirky studio is a super base for couples or two friends.

Warkworth has some charming little pubs and tea rooms with walks along the river where it is not unusual to see some rare birds. Nearby, the town of Amble which is reputedly ’the friendliest port’ has a working harbour, marina, Sunday market, fish and chip shops and plenty of varied amenities. Alnwick, with its famous castle featured in Harry Potter and Downton Abbey, is only a few miles with cobbled streets and famous water gardens with a spectacular grand cascade, and the worlds largest tree house restaurant should not be missed. Warkworth is on the main Heritage coastal route which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and from here you can enjoy some glorious unspoilt beaches and rugged coastline.

Set in the small, picturesque village of Rock, The Old Workshop has been fully converted to create a single-storey holiday cottage. Built in 1856, this property comprises a spacious open-plan living area with large French windows leading onto the patio, linked to the stylish dining kitchen area. Guests are welcome to use the culinary herbs at the front of the cottage for cooking during their stay. There is solid oak flooring throughout the property. The small entrance hall links to the spacious bedroom which has large built-in wardrobes, and there is an outside boot and wellie rack.

The village has a well-marked trail past the ancient church. The golden beaches of Newton-by-the-Sea and Embleton are less than 5 miles away. Combine a fabulous coastal walk to Dunstanburgh Castle and back with lunch overlooking the sea in the quaint fishing village of Craster, world famous for its smoked kippers and salmon. Golfers are spoilt for choice being within easy reach of many first-class coastal courses. Inland, the Northumberland National Park is a stunning area of natural beauty, a magnet for cyclists, bird watchers and anglers. The market town of Alnwick, five miles away, is famous for its castle, featured in Harry Potter films and Downton Abbey, and the splendid gardens with the famous treehouse restaurant. To the north lies the busy town of Seahouses and the Farne Islands.

The region is simply a paradise for walkers and cyclists, and as the protected site stretches over 100 miles, you certainly won’t be short on places to explore.

Real Downtonians are advised to visit Alnwick Castle, which featured in the popular BBC production of Downton Abbey. They might be a little outnumbered however, as young witches and wizards also flock to the site which was used as part of the Hogwarts set in the Harry Potter movies. Adjacent to the castle is The Alnwick Garden, a fantastic complex of water gardens with grand cascades and the world’s largest treehouse.
