Travel south to the traditional market town of Cardigan, where the beautifully restored castle is not to be missed with 900 years of history to uncover. Enjoy a short walk into the village to discover the traditional Welsh pub or a freshly brewed coffee in the village café. There’s so much to explore in Cardigan Bay but if you want a day out to Pembrokeshire you can reach the well-known family attractions of Oakwood Theme Park and Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo within an hour’s drive. Situated just 5 minutes from Cardigan Bay and within easy reach to the whole of the beautiful Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire coastline and coastal walks, The Stables is a detached, converted stone holiday cottage peacefully set on a farm with a selection of alpacas, donkeys, goats, ducks and chickens. The owners who live on the farm, which is set in 48 acres of rolling countryside, encourage the children to interact with the animals, and are also pleased to offer the use of a barbecue hut nicknamed the ‘Hobbit House’ by the family. Guests can hire it during their stay directly with the owners, subject to availability and for a small charge. There is bike storage in the barn if you would like to bring your own bikes.
Within a 15-minute drive visitors can discover quaint New Quay, famous for the bottlenose dolphins that can often be seen from the harbour (boat trips available in season). The colourful, Georgian, harbour town of Aberaeron is just a bit further up the coast road, with its chic shops and plenty of restaurants. Antique shoppers and browsers will enjoy the nearby market town of Newcastle Emlyn, and Cenarth with its waterfalls is also close by and offers indoor swimming, coracle rides, fishing and paintballing. There are numerous attractions in the area, particularly suitable for children.
Nearby is the Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park, which is set on a headland overlooking the nature reserve of Cardigan Island, home to thousands of sea birds. At the foot of the cliffs, a colony of Atlantic grey seals can be observed in their natural habitat. Spectacular coastline and wonderful views can be savoured from the National Trust managed Penbryn Bay and a visit to National Trust Cilgerran Castle can also be enjoyed. Only the ruins remain of this striking 13th-century castle, whose vantage point overlooks the wonderful Teifi Gorge. Also nearby is the town of Cardigan with its restored medieval castle. The name, the Plucking Barn originates from the days of old when the barn was used to prepare ducks and chickens. Today there is no trace of that, but instead you will be greeted by friendly owners who have created a modern and very comfortable holiday cottage, in an ‘upside down’ style to take advantage of the gorgeous views. On the ground floor there are two bedrooms, one a double and the other a twin. They both have access to the lovely shower room with walk-in shower. There is thermostatically controlled radiators upstairs, and underfloor heating on the ground floor. Upstairs, the living area is open plan with a spacious modern and well equipped kitchen and dining space which leads to the living area where there are two comfy leather sofas and chair. You can sit here and take full advantage of the amazing countryside views or step out through the patio doors onto the balcony and enjoy sitting at the table with a coffee or a glass of something chilled and breathe in the fresh Welsh air. There’s also an outside seating area right by the barn with barbecue, table and chairs and a great enclosed paddock for exercising dogs right opposite.
The location of the Plucking Barn makes it an ideal base for day trips around west and mid Wales. There are over 60 miles of glorious coastline in Cardigan Bay. There are lots of beaches and coves and many are dog friendly all year round if you are bringing your pet on holiday with you. The pretty coastal resort of New Quay and the colourful Georgian harbour town Aberaeron can be easily reached within 30 minutes’ drive. You’re very likely to see dolphins in the bay and there are boat trips available to watch them and the other wildlife. The Victorian seaside and university town of Aberystwyth is also within easy reach and here you’ll find a traditional pier, promenade and the old electric cliff railway to the summit of Constitution Hill where you can enjoy a really panoramic view of the bay.
If outdoor activities are your thing, there are plenty of options for walkers and cyclists of all abilities as well as horse riding, canoeing and more. Families can enjoy a day out at the National Trust Dolaucothi Gold Mines at Pumsaint, the Silver Mountain Experience (silver-lead mines) at Ponterwyd or the red kite feeding centre at Bwlch Nant Yr Arian. Dildre, named after an ancestral family farm in the area is a delightful two kingsize bedroom holiday property, all on one level, attached to the owner’s home. Situated within their working sheep farm in a rural location, Dildre has been thoughtfully furnished to give holidaymakers a very comfortable stay. The kitchen/dining room which also has a comfy sofa to enjoy the views, has direct access through the French doors on to a secluded patio, which is a tranquil place to enjoy a morning coffee or an evening drink. There you will find seating for four, a table and the hot tub. The cosy separate living room also provides direct access to another seating area at the front of the property, overlooking the farm to the countryside and hills beyond. The cottage has two kingsize double bedrooms, one with an en-suite bathroom and a second shower room, making it perfect for couples or friends holidaying together. The land is encircled by a footpath and bridleway of approximately 2 miles. If you wish to order your supermarket groceries to be delivered on the day you arrive the owners will take delivery and put all your shopping away for you in advance of your arrival so that your wine is chilling in the fridge!
Dildre is ideally situated for exploring this diverse region of West Wales, and is perfect for a weekend break or a longer stay with award winning beaches (many pet-friendly year round), sandy coves, sea cliffs, caves and wonderful wildlife, amazing sunsets and starry skies. Less than 10 miles away, you can discover the attractive Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron with its colourful houses and an array of independent shops and lots of cafés, restaurants and pubs. There are many events and festivals held annually within the town, including a mackerel festival, the festival of Welsh ponies and cobs, beer and cider festival and a rugby sevens event. The National Trust Georgian country estate of Llanerchaeron, just 2½ miles south east of Aberaeron, can be reached from the town along a wide level pedestrian pathway, ideal for cyclists, pushchairs or wheelchairs.
Just a bit further down the coast, you will find the seaside town of New Quay, where the houses cling to the rocks, and the long harbour wall is the perfect place to enjoy fish and chips whilst you try to spot the regular visitors of bottlenose dolphins or just watch the boats bobbing. Boat trips are available in season and offer a spectacular view of the coastline, and the bay is home to an amazing variety of wildlife, both above and under the waves. A 20-minute drive towards the Cambrian Mountains will bring you the historic market town of Tregaron, centre for ‘Trotian’ - horse trotting and carriage racing. The annual summer event attracts competitors from all over the UK and Ireland. It is also the home of the Welsh Gold Centre selling Celtic inspired designs. Just outside the town, you can discover the Cors Caron Nature Reserve covering 2,000 acres.
