In John Peel country, Caldbeck is a pretty and peaceful village which has, in addition to cafés, craft and antique shops, a goldsmith, clogmaker and bowling green. Situated on the edge of the National Park, it is known locally as ’Back o’ Skiddaw’, a walk over which will bring you into the bustling market town of Keswick. Keswick with its lakes, Bassenthwaite and Derwent Water are a 15-minute drive and full of interesting things to see and do. To the west, a mile away, is Lowther Castle (featured on the Antiques Roadshow) and the beautiful villages of Askham, Pooley Bridge and Glenridding. Ullswater lake offers various attractions including a trip on the old steamer, sailing, paddle boarding, fishing and some of Wainwright’s favourite fell walks, including one of the big four, Helvellyn.
    For walkers to the east, there are more opportunities to explore in the Pennine hills and Yorkshire Dales National Park.
