Springholm is a lovely, quirky, terraced holiday cottage situated in the beautiful village of Bootle, on the west coast of the Lake District National Park. Built in 1757, Springholm has been used as a home and carpenter’s workshop before being re-converted in 1991. Bootle is one of the oldest and smallest market towns in Britain, with a population of about 700. The market charter was granted in 1348 by King Edward III. Springholm looks out onto the fells and there is easy access to Bootle Fell, Corney Fell, Birker Fell and Black Combe. The stunning high fells around Wasdale - including Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England - are just 15 miles away. Roman ruins and light railway at Ravenglass estuary are 8 miles away, Muncaster Castle and World Owl Sanctuary, 7 miles. Eskmeals beach is 1 mile, other good beaches at Haverigg and Silecroft. Renovated from an old barn, Swaledale Cottage (ref W1780) is the middle cottage, Ellerbeck Cottage (ref W1821) is the end cottage, they are nicely decorated and furnished and feature exposed beams, with views over farmland to the fells beyond and walking right from the door. Children can explore the workings of a real farm, they can sit on a tractor and feed the lambs (accompanied by the owner). In John Peel country, Caldbeck is a pretty and peaceful village which has, in addition to cafés, craft and antique shops, a goldsmith, clogmaker and bowling green. Situated on the edge of the National Park, it is known locally as ’Back o’ Skiddaw’, a walk over which will bring you into the bustling market town of Keswick. Keswick with its lakes, Bassenthwaite and Derwent Water are a 15-minute drive and full of interesting things to see and do. Enjoy a ride up Derwent Water on the Keswick Launch, use the many walking and cycle paths to explore the breathtaking scenery, experience the theatre by the lake and the numerous museums suitable for all the family. This Victorian terraced holiday home is situated 50ft from the sea in the small coastal village of Seascale. It has spectacular views across the sea to the Isle of Man and south west Scotland. Seascale boasts miles of sandy beaches. The sea provides the opportunity for fishing, windsurfing and water skiing. There is a slipway for launching boats, an 18-hole golf course, bowling green, sports centre and children’s play area. Local attractions include Muncaster Castle, World Owl Centre, Ravenglass to Eskdale Narrow Gauge Railway and the western Lake District area. Shop, pub and restaurant 200 yards.

Ullswater lake offers various attractions including a trip on the old steamer, sailing, paddle boarding, fishing and some of Wainwright’s favourite fell walks, including one of the big four, Helvellyn.
For walkers to the east, there are more opportunities to explore in the Pennine hills and Yorkshire Dales National Park. There are peaceful country lanes for cycling and the Eden Valley Circular Cycle Route runs through Great Strickland. There are good opportunities nearby for horse riding, golf, sailing, canoeing, fishing, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting.
Penrith is a short drive away to the north and has excellent shopping choices with five supermarkets, as well as an excellent local produce delicatessen, many arts and crafts shops, a cinema and a variety of restaurants. Within walking distance are two village pubs The Lowther Castle Inn and The Strickland Arms serving good food and a Michelin Star restaurant, Allium nearby in Askham. The Old Mill offers a perfect, relaxing, holiday base in a beautiful valley in the centre of this amazing scenic area.
