  • Grooms Bothy, Scottish BordersInstant Book Overlay Image
Converted in 2019 by the owners to a very good standard, Grooms Bothy is the perfect place for couples or a family to enjoy some time away from the hustle and bustle. Formed over two levels of a former stable building, the house has two bedrooms sleeping four comfortably. The ground floor is mostly open plan with a living room, breakfast area and kitchen. The modern efficient wood burner is a lovely feature, especially on those chilly evenings. Lastly the spacious shower room is on the ground floor and the underfloor heating is a nice touch.
Grooms Bothy sits next to, and on the site of, the former Nenthorn manse. The grounds extend to 8 acres and is used as an equestrian facility. For a small fee, stabling and use of the facilities could be organised for someone wishing to travel with their own horse(s). The surrounding countryside is arguably some of the most beautiful in the country and we would encourage some exploring around the Scottish Borders. Jedburgh is right in the heart of the beautiful Scottish Borders and this property in Castle Gate is right in the heart of the town which is steeped in history. This fabulous house was updated in late 2022 with guest comfort in mind. Ideally suited to couples and small families, this home away from home will prove to be the perfect place to relax after a day out exploring. There are two bedrooms upstairs, one fitted as a double and one zip and link twin bedroom. Downstairs the house is modern and has an open plan space where the kitchen, dining and living spaces can be enjoyed. The kitchen is well equipped and has everything you’d need for the preparation and enjoying of meals although given the short walk to the very centre of Jedburgh, you may spend more time out and about than indoors. That said, this is the perfect place to just kick back and relax.
Jedburgh was once home to Mary Queen of Scots, in fact her house was just down the hill and round the corner, today it has its own visitors centre which can be enjoyed all year round. The ruin of the 12th-century abbey is worth a walk round and captivates the imagination, as does the castle and former jail at the top of the hill, which on a clear day has the most fabulous view and could be a spot to enjoy a picnic. Take trip to one of the surrounding towns or even a day out in Edinburgh which is an hour north by car. Within the surrounding area the number of activities and attractions available are enough to suit anyone’s tastes.

  • Purves Cottage, Scottish BordersInstant Book Overlay Image
Set in a lovely, rural village setting, in the beautiful Scottish Borders near Berwick-on-Tweed on the East Coast mainline. With a lovely, enclosed garden to relax in, river walks right next to the village and an award-winning pub on your doorstep - you’ll have everything you could wish for for a holiday in Scotland.
Purves Cottage is a prominent and historic yet homely and cosy building, formerly a tailor’s business, one of many in the village back in the early 1900s, which has now been lovingly converted to a delightful spacious holiday cottage. It is in perfect location for walks or fishing on the Whiteadder and Blackadder rivers at Allanton (just 100 yards from the cottage) and nearby on the Tweed in various locations throughout the borders. There is a separate fully enclosed garden out to the rear which is accessed across the parking area looking out over the field with basic BBQ facilities, table and chairs and a whirligig washing line should you need it. There is a log store here too, and a selection of outdoor games. There is a water hose fitted outside if you want to wash dogs from a muddy walk!
Allanton usually hosts a number of annual events including a summer beer festival and garden party (June). Being just 100 yards up the street it’s not far to stumble home after a tipple or two. Choose from over 40 gins, a great selection of wines and fabulous food. There is a beer garden to the rear and dogs are also welcome. On sunny days you can dine al fresco in the pretty garden overlooking the fields towards the coast.
There is play-park further up the village for young children, and you have access to some of the most beautiful countryside and riverside walks.
The cottage is perfectly located to enjoy an abundance of sights, places to visit, attractions and activities for all tastes including amazing walks, beaches, golf, fishing, shooting, cycle routes and surfing. St Abbs and Coldingham on the coast a few miles away are excellent for surfing, sea-kayaking, and diving. There are a number of historic houses and castles nearby such as Manderston, Thirlestaine, Mellerstain and Floors Castle all a short drive away throughout the Borders. Alnwick Castle & Gardens (of Harry Potter fame!) is a short drive down the A1, as is Bamburgh Castle on the fantastic Northumberland coast. You can take a drive down the coast through a number of pretty coastal villages and towns. Holy Island or Lindisfarne (featured in TV series Vikings and The Last Kingdom) is a real treat to visit with lovely local shops selling gifts, art and ice-cream, Lindisfarne Castle and beautiful historic priory to walk around. Holy Island is cut off twice-daily from the rest of the world by fast-moving tides which cover over the causeway road to and from the island - so be sure to check the crossing times or you’ll be stranded! Shop 1 mile. Beach 11 miles.
Please note that Allanton is in a rural area and August is the main harvest month here for farmers rushing to get the crops in dodging the rain, so farm traffic can be going through the village at all hours during this time.
