For those who prefer outdoor pursuits, the Dove and Manifold Valleys are close by offering good walking and cycling, whilst Alton Towers is just 25 minutes away!

Nearby Bakewell, Chatsworth, and Matlock Bath are easily accessible by car. There are lovely country walks from the farmhouse itself and a wonderful pub within a ten-minute walk. Matlock has a large variety of shops, supermarkets, a launderette, cafes, restaurants, pubs, an indoor swimming pool, a weekly market, and parks. Nearby Matlock Bath is a well-known resort on the river with fish and chips, cable cars, and numerous entertainments. Enjoy a thrilling day at Gulliver’s Kingdom with its owl maze, water gardens, nature trails, exhilarating rides, and cable car trips over the magnificent Matlock Gorge. Slightly closer to home you’ll find the award-winning Millennium Walkway, and superb Torr’s sandstone gorge at New Mills, 15 minutes away. The wonderful village of Hayfield neighbours Glossop and is popular with walkers due its close proximity to Kinder Scout. Hayfield caters well for tourists with its own collection of pubs, cafés and restaurants. If you’re looking for city life, the bright lights of Manchester are just a half hour’s drive away, or 30 minutes on a direct train from Glossop. Shop 170 yards, pub and restaurant 20 yards.

Buxton is a real festival town and the cottage’s great location puts you in a ideal location to enjoy its summer carnivals and many musical and theatrical events. Situated within very easy walking distance of all the Buxton International Festival and Fringe venues, it is short walk from Buxton Opera House. Buxton is surrounded by the beautiful Derbyshire countryside and lies less than a mile from the Peak National Park. The more adventurous can enjoy cycling, rock climbing and gliding. Visit Chatsworth and Haddon Hall, and the National Trust’s Hardwick Hall, all of which have starred in the BBC period dramas and historical films. And if ever you do get a yearning for the big city, there’s always Manchester, just an hour away on the train. Really, what more could you want?

There are great walks in the area and It is a great base to explore the Peak District with its market towns of Bakewell and Ashbourne, as well as its many pretty villages. Also the National Trust properties of Calke Abbey, Kedleston Hall and Sudbury Hall with its museum of childhood are all within 10 miles. A little further is the National Trust owned Hardwick Hall, and the Duke of Devonshire’s Chatsworth Estate with its annual country fair and Adventure Farm for children. The National Memorial Arboretum and the rich heritage of Burton-on-Trent with its fantastic National Brewery Centre Museum is just down the road. You can also venture into the National Forest with the award-winning Conkers attraction just 10 miles away, plus Castle Donnington race track is just 20 minutes’ drive and Alton Towers is 30 minutes’ away. The parish of Dethick, Lea and Holloway is steeped in history and Lea is also recorded in the Domesday Book as Lede; the famous Florence Nightingale spent much of her early life at Lea Hurst. The peaceful village of Lea offers visitors friendly pubs, tea rooms, restaurants and the famous John Smedley factory. Rural Derbyshire is a real treasure trove offering everything for the visitor including country houses, historic halls, medieval ruins, heritage railways, cycleways, beautiful unspoilt countryside and pretty villages. One of the closest attractions to Lea Hall is the Heights of Abraham. Built on the site of historic lead mining, the hilltop park is approached by cable car which rises up and offers some spectacular views of the Derwent Valley and surrounding Peak District. This pretty, semi-detached cottage is tucked away in a courtyard in the very heart of the rural village of Youlgrave in the beautiful Peak District. Meadow View is a cosy cottage perfect as a base for couples or families and their furry friends from which to explore the wonderful scenery straight from the doorstep. The cottage embraces modern times, but still has a nod to its past keeping some original features. Youlgreave is one of the larger Peak District villages, with narrow streets running for about 1½ miles. This fantastic location makes a great base for outdoor enthusiasts and sightseers alike with walks galore. The market towns of Ashbourne, Matlock and Wirksworth, with their variety of attractions, shops, coffee shops and restaurants, are all within a 30-minute drive. Chatsworth House and Ntional Trust Haddon Hall are just 15 minutes away, and for cyclists and walkers the famous Monsal Trail offers traffic-free peace. For the thrillseekers, Alton Towers theme park can be reached easily from this location. Meadows Huts, Foxglove (UK37639) and Forget-Me-Not (UK37646) are located just outside of the quaint village of Parwich, 5 miles from the nearest town, Ashbourne. This area of the Peak District is fantastic for exploring the countryside. The High Peak trail and the Tissington trail are both within 3 miles of the huts as well as recognised cycle routes. Dovedale is a must to visit whilst in the area, read up on the history of the steppingstones and take the walk yourselves up Thorpe Cloud where you will see breath-taking views well worth the hike. If you are more of a thrill seeker Alton Towers is only a 20-minute drive which makes a fun day out for all the family or take on some water sports at Carsington reservoir.
After all this enjoy a nice meal in the evening at the local pub. Foxglove and Forget-me-not are two similar shepherds’ huts, both finished to an incredible standard with home comforts in mind. As the gateway to the Hope Valley, you’re also close to excellent walking at Edale, and just 10 minutes from the beautiful village of Castleton. The fascinating plague village of Eyam is around a 15-minute drive; Bakewell and Chatsworth House are around 20 minutes. Finally, for anyone wanting to give their cars a rest, Hathersage train station is less than ½ mile and serves the cities of both Manchester and Sheffield directly, together with Bamford, Hope and Edale.
