At the bottom of the lane is a small river with a ford across to the fields, and there is no through traffic. It lies close to Axminster, an unspoilt Devon market town situated on the River Axe, surrounded by stunning countryside and filled with charm and character. This attractive market town lies in the beautiful Axe Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, boasting quaint villages and unspoilt countryside. Famous for its carpets, the original Axminster factory was opened in 1755 by Thomas Whitty and authentic British ’Axminsters’ are still made in the town by Axminster Carpets. Situated a few miles inland from the Jurassic Coast, guests can visit towns such as Beer, Branscombe, Sidmouth and Seaton with its famous tramway.
Tucked in the south east corner of Devon, Axminster is an ideal touring centre for the neighbouring counties of Somerset and Dorset, with Lyme Regis and Charmouth just 6 miles away.
Celebrity chef and TV presenter Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has his very first River Cottage Canteen and Deli (an organic produce shop/market and canteen) here, and his River Cottage HQ is nearby in the Axe valley. Shepherds Knapp Lodge (ref UK13284) is a beautiful, detached, two bedroom lodge with a large well laid out living/kitchen/dining area, with a large comfy corner sofa. The pine dining table is perfect for mealtimes as well as socialising in the evening playing games or enjoying a glass of wine after a long day exploring. The two bedrooms are warm and comfortable with a double and a twin and the good sized shower room has a corner shower cubicle.
Shepherds Knapp (ref UK13285) is a stunning semi-detached, two bedroom cottage, the beautiful and well-equipped kitchen/dining room has granite worktops, marble dining table and range cooker. The large French doors lead onto the balcony with picture perfect views over the hills beyond. Upstairs are two sumptuous bedrooms with the main bedroom having a kingsize French bed. Just 10 minutes drive away is the gorgeous seaside town of Lyme Regis with its sandy beach and seaside stores, the harbour town of West Bay (made famous by the TV series Broadchurch) is reachable within 20 minutes. The living room has comfy sofas, Smart TV to catch up on your latest box set and large French doors leading to your private enclosed garden which has a lovely patio area and artificial grass allowing children and your four legged friends to enjoy the garden at any time of year. Opposite the parking area you will find the owner’s 4-acre field for walking the dogs and enjoying the views.
You will find a local pub/restaurant and farm shop within a 5-minute walk of the properties, alternatively, jump in the car and explore the many things to do within a short drive. Axminster has small independent shops as well as larger stores and a railway station, so you could leave the car at home and hop aboard and head down to Exeter for a day in the city sampling restaurants or a spot of retail therapy!
The Jurassic Coast beaches of Lyme Regis and Charmouth are just 20 minutes from you, here you can walk the promenade, swim in the sea or have an ice cream at Lyme, or hunt for Fossils in Charmouth while your dog swims in the river or the sea.
