Whilst the house is only occasionally snowed in, particularly between December and February, it is best suited to people who enjoy being in remote countryside. The surrounding fields and heather moorland are home to an abundance of wildlife, including lapwing, curlew and red grouse. Ideal for walking, bird watching, active holidays with family, friends, or to celebrate a special occasion. The moors, footpaths and bridleways are on your doorstep, and Kildale’s small train station is on the glorious Esk Valley line to the ancient seaport of Whitby, passing through Goathland, Heartbeat’s village; you can even enjoy the leisurely journey by steam. Visit the Georgian market town of Stokesley where the partly cobbled streets are lined with inns, tea rooms and a mix of shops. Explore the heritage coast and sandy beaches of Yorkshire with seaside towns such as Saltburn, Whitby and Scarborough within easy reach, and fishing villages including Staithes, Runswick Bay and Robin Hood’s Bay. Historic homes, abbeys and castles abound in this area with Newby Hall and Gardens, Castle Howard, the castle ruins in Helmsley and Rievaulx Abbey in the vicinity. Bridle paths, cycle tracks and walkways abound from the door, with the ancient Monks Pathway being a favourite with walkers visiting this area. Whitby is a fantastic destination for holidaymakers with the steam train departing throughout the summer on its way to Grosmont and Goathland – those famous villages used in the TV series ‘Heartbeat’. Also, Whitby boasts a colourful harbour, 3 miles of sandy beach, the 12th century Abbey ruins and St Marys Church. The town also hosts many festivals throughout the year with folk weekends, 60’s music festivals and Goth weekends, bringing guests from far and wide. Mortar Barn is the ideal place for exploring both the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and the Heritage Coast of Yorkshire. Scarborough has been welcoming guests for more than 300 years and has all the ingredients for a family packed day at the seaside, with Filey and Bridlington a little further along the coast line. Closer to home, is the smugglers coves of Robin Hood’s Bay, Runswick Bay and Staithes, where pretty cottages cling to cliffs and time appears to have stood still. Conquer one, or all three of the ’Three Peaks’; Ingleborough, Whernside and Penyghent, or cycle through the peaceful and rarely visited Kingdale with its quiet lanes and isolated farmhouses. Alternatively, both the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District are readily accessible by car. The bustling market town of Settle is well served with a variety of pubs and restaurants and is just 1 mile away. Here you will also find a swimming pool, golf course and weekly market. Set in a stunning rural position within the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Fell Cottage is a traditional limestone conversion of a former farm building restored to provide a wonderful quaint holiday retreat. The cottage is situated in beautiful Raydale, a rural and unspoilt area of Wensleydale. It is surrounded by traditional farming country and ringed by high fells.
In the distance the dramatic peak of Addleborough can be seen and Lake Semerwater is a pleasant walk away. It is handy for many of the areas famous attractions, including the bustling little market town of Hawes and the pretty villages of Bainbridge and Askrigg, with its pub which was used as the local in the James Herriot series ’All Creatures Great and Small’.
Raydale is a haven for wildlife, with hares and deer often sighted in the surrounding fields at dawn and dusk, along with a wide variety of upland bird life including pheasant, partridge, curlew, duck and of course, Lake Semerwater stocked with a variety of fish. The hamlet of Marsett is set high in the hills above Bainbridge, providing far reaching panoramic views of the dales and fells beyond. Marsett itself has true rustic country charm as cattle and sheep can roam freely on the village green. Horse riding and fishing nearby. Shop, pub and restaurant 3½ miles.

This former cart store has been converted into a quaint Dale’s stone cottage set just off the village green in Bellerby. With its streams and mill race running through Bellerby it’s a picturesque setting at the edge of Wensleydale. Entering the front door into the living/dining room with exposed stonework, flagstone flooring, beams and a large inglenook fireplace, the cottage offers an abundance of character and charm. The two settees set around the open fire offer a cosy feel while watching the Smart TV in Holly Cottage.
A dining table and chairs are positioned to the rear of the room. Going through to the kitchen, all the appliances, crockery, and utensils you need are available to rustle up some cosy meals while staying at Holly Cottage. The characterful staircase from the living room has uneven, deep treads with a rope banister to guide you up towards the two bedrooms. Both rooms offer comfortable beds, one being a double, the other offering bunk beds suitable for children with attractive quality linen and hand and bath towels available for each Guest. The compact shower room has a shower cubicle with a deep step in/out, toilet, sink and heated towel rail.
To the rear of the property there is an enclosed picket fenced garden which includes a lawn area and flower beds, along with a stone patio h a table, chairs, and a bench to enjoy sitting at while taking in a morning coffee or firing up the barbecue for an alfresco supper. The South facing front garden is not secured for dogs but guests can happily sit there on the bench and watch the world go by. The shared front driveway which offers parking for 1 car. The attached property, Cherry Tree Cottage, has allocated parking for 2 cars on the same driveway. Both properties can be used by larger Groups if required. Please ask about this option.
Bellerby is a village situated on the edge of The Yorkshire Dales National Park with a local pub serving a selection of real ales but unfortunately no food and although there is no shop or amenities as such in the village the lovely market town of Leyburn is just over a mile away where an array of individual shops, pubs, cafés, and restaurants are available. If you are looking to get out and stretch your legs, whether walking or cycling, there are abundant established public footpaths, bridleways, and cycle routes available in the local vicinity with spectacular scenery, open countryside, and pretty Yorkshire villages to explore.
Within easy driving distance there is an array of places to visit whether it’s the historic Castle Bolton, Richmond Castle, Jervaulx Abbey or the stunning Aysgarth Falls, there is something to suit everyone’s taste. The children and adults alike will love Forbidden Corner with its quirky folly garden to explore or for the more adventurous why not visit the theme park, Lightwater Valley. The Shawl is only a few steps from the Market Place in the centre of Leyburn and is accessible for walkers of all abilities and ages. Hop on the Wensleydale Vintage Bus to Ripon or Hawes, or ride the train on the Wensleydale Railway. Visit the nearby Forbidden Corner attraction in Coverdale where guests can follow a trail of follies, or the Georgian market town of Richmond, which offers many shops, restaurants, pubs and tea shops. This beautiful and historic town in is settled high above the River Swale and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area and the chance to browse the weekly market and monthly farmers’ market with local produce and crafts. Within an easy 2-hour drive is the historic cathedral city of Durham with its cathedral, castle and city walls.
