Oakwood is situated just in front of Sewerby Hall and Gardens, a beautiful Georgian mansion set in 50-acres of landscaped gardens, plus a zoo to keep the children entertained. This detached property lies in the village of Sewerby, on the clifftops of the east Yorkshire coast overlooking the bay of Bridlington. The seafront is just a short stroll away, where you can walk along the clifftop to Bridlington, or catch the land train which runs several times a day throughout the summer. In the opposite direction is Danes Dyke, a local nature reserve. For those of you with dogs, the walks along the cliffs are breathtaking, and this is the reason why so many walkers return to this area year after year. There is also a large grassed area where you can enjoy a picnic or perhaps a game of cricket. Alternatively, spend a lazy afternoon watching the local village team play cricket and take in the stunning scenery of the coast.

Bridlington is a busy, traditional seaside resort and still has a working harbour, where you can watch the boats come in with their catch. Flamborough Head and the RSPB bird sanctuary at Bempton are close by. See the puffins in their natural habitat, as well as kittiwakes, guillemots and gannets. There are many stately homes to visit in the area, including Burton Agnes Hall, Sledmere House and Castle Howard. Hull, the City of Culture 2017, and the medieval city of York can be reached within an hour by both car or train. The market towns of Beverley, Driffield and Pocklington, with their charming independent shops and cafes, are well worth a visit. The coastal resorts of Scarborough, Filey and Whitby are easily accessible, or inland, enjoy a wonderful drive through the North York Moors National Park. Beach ½ mile. South Cave offers a charming selection of amenities with several shops, two pubs, a restaurant and a country house hotel with health spa and golf club. The surrounding area of the Yorkshire Wolds inspired the famous David Hockney paintings, and walkers and cyclists can enjoy the gentle undulating hills and stunning scenery. Local attractions include the South Cave Falconry with its collection of owls and birds of prey, and North Cave Wetlands, a Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Reserve. In the neighbouring village of North Cave, families with children can enjoy the facilities of the popular William’s Den. Visit the delightful market town of Beverley and the beautiful minster, historical buildings and cobbled streets, bordered by pavement cafés and fine dining restaurants.
Beverley hosts spectacular music festivals and numerous farmers’ markets, and horse racing at the Westwood racecourse. Hull, City of Culture 2017, is the home city of poet Philip Larkin and birthplace of William Wilberforce. Places of interest include The Deep, a huge aquarium housing over 3,500 fish, the Ferens art gallery, the Maritime Museum and Hull Truck Theatre. Miles of sandy beaches can be found at Bridlington, Filey and Scarborough, and the historic walled city of York is within an hour’s drive. Shop 350 yards, pub ¾ mile, restaurant 330 yards.

The seaside town of Bridlington can easily be reached on foot or just a short drive. Possibly the best attraction of Bridlington is its large sandy beach that is sure to provide a great day out of sandcastle building and paddling! There are plenty of bars, pubs and restaurants to be found as well as some great shopping to be had. The cities of York and Hull, named the ‘City of culture 2017’, are both well worth a visit during your stay and can be reached by car in less than an hour. Beach 1 mile. Tickton Hall is a 110-acre private country estate nestled at the end of a tree lined drive just outside the historical market town of Beverley. The estate has wonderful, established woodlands and parklands with grazing horses in abundance, which you can see from many of the cottages’ windows. It is also home to the Beverley Polo Club with two polo pitches, fabulous full-size arena and stabling for up to 60 horses. You just might be able to catch a polo match during your stay! There are superb walks straight from the cottage doors. Within the estate you can walk around the picturesque horse exercise course or the cross country course, all within a couple of minutes of the cottages. Or if you are looking for a longer hike, the estate links to designated walks along the river bank that extend for miles. A must during your stay is a short stroll around the polo pitch to the fabulous country pub offering gorgeous local fare with a great garden for children or a suntrap spot by the river bank – no need to drive!
Beverley, 4 miles, is well known for its racecourse, minster and many boutiques and excellent coffee shops. The coast at Hornsea can be reached within 10 miles, with traditional amusements and promenade, and a wildlife centre at Hornsea Mere. York, a great place for a day out, is about an hour’s drive, and The Deep at Hull, one of the UK’s biggest aquariums, is about half an hour away. Beach 10 miles. West End Farmhouse stands proud in the peaceful village of Ulrome, close to the beautiful rugged Yorkshire Coast. This detached holiday property is excellent for families, as there is a very large garden for the children to run around in and a little Wendy house for them to play in. There is also a fantastic terraced area, which is ideal for a barbecue, and in addition, a boot room with a stairgate and storage for bikes and boots. For people who enjoy fishing, the owner provides coarse fishing free of charge (fishing licence required) for the fishing pond, which is just along the lane. In 15 minutes, guests can walk from the property down through the village lanes to the beach. It provides an excellent base for those wishing to explore the east coast of Yorkshire and what it has to offer. Close by, visit the famous RSPB Bempton Cliffs, where you can observe puffins and gannets in their natural habitat. There are some fantastic walks and cycle rides along the rugged cliffs of the east coast, some of it being part of the Cleveland Way. Just 8 miles down the coast, visit the hustle and bustle of the traditional seaside resort of Bridlington. With its working fishing port, you can see the catch brought in on the quayside. There is also a large sandy beach and rock pools for the kids to go crabbing. The famous Spa theatre also provides excellent entertainment throughout the year. Guests can take a short land train journey to Sewerby Hall and Gardens, just one of the many stately homes in the area. Burton Agnes and Sledmere are also worth a visit and for those who would like a trip out; you have the fantastic medieval city of York, which is just over an hour away. Located in the 3-house hamlet of North Cattleholmes and accessed via country lanes, The Old Barn is a thoughtfully converted 200-year old stable block, offering comfortable and flexible accommodation for two. The cottage is well-equipped and tastefully furnished.

The location of the cottage feels remote, tranquil and deep in the heart of the countryside, perfect for getting away from it all, yet offering easy access to a range of services and attractions.

This is a perfect base for the wildlife enthusiast as it is located in the middle of Yorkshire’s Wildlife Triangle, with the internationally significant bird sites at Flamborough and Bempton a short drive away, regionally important wetland habitat with snakes, water voles and otters, and good viewing of hares, owls and kingfishers from the cottage. One guest logged 25 species from the cottage bench before breakfast in 2022. If the wildlife is being elusive our horses and poultry always enjoy attention.

The coastline is diverse with many different coastal landscapes to explore, lots of perfect dog friendly beaches and some classic ‘bucket and spade’ seaside towns. The area boasts some unique stately homes that are managed by their original families, or the East Riding of Yorkshire Council in one case, so are charmingly individual and most rewarding to visit.

For walkers, the Yorkshire Wolds give perfect views at every turn and facilitate a range of walks, from gentle ambles to leg burning route marches. Most walks enable you to include pretty villages and welcoming pubs. This location is a cyclist’s dream. Miles of quiet lanes with the option to pootle on the flat or flog up some serious scarp slopes and everything in-between. Whether on wheels or foot, you always feel like you have the landscape pretty much to yourself.

York, Scarborough and the North York Moors are also easily accessed from here. The market town of Driffield with a wide range of services and some quirky independent shops is a 10-minute drive away. The beautiful medieval town of Beverley is within easy access. It is the loveliest place to shop, lunch and admire what our ancestors could build. The more energetic will enjoy the Westwood pasture – 4 square kilometres of common land where dogs can, and do, go mad.

Closer to home, the nearest pubs (there are three of them), shop and railway station are in the village of Nafferton, approximately 2 miles away. The owners have extensive local knowledge and love to help guests make the most of their stay.

Built in 1818, this detached holiday cottage, a former chapel school room, stands adjacent to the owners’ working arable and livestock farm and provides a cosy rural retreat with scenic walks from the doorstep. Bird lovers can enjoy the close proximity to Tophill Low Nature Reserve and other reserves situated in the Yorkshire Nature Triangle including RSPB Bempton, Spurn Point and North Cave Wetlands. There are water sports activity centres at Billabong and Fosse Hill, golf at Hainsworth Park and fishing available locally. Visit the stately homes at Burton Agnes, Burton Constable and Sewerby Hall and enjoy the Yorkshire Wolds scenery which inspired the famous Hockney paintings.
