Ulverston is a great place from which to explore the South Lakes. The property is a 6-minute walk to the shortest canal in England and is a favourite for fishermen. Walking the canal takes you to Canal Foot and the tidal estuary where you can enjoy a drink overlooking the sea. The coast is a very short drive away at Bardsea where you can enjoy the best ice cream around and walk for miles on the quiet beach.
The town of Ulverston is packed with character from the markets and festivals to the independent shops that make up the high streets. So whether you want the high-end family butcher, the huge selection of freshly ground coffees or unique gifts, Ulverston has it all in walking distance of the property.
There are some fabulous restaurants in the town with high Tripadvisor ratings. If you like Mexican food, there a great restaurant in the town, but be warned, you will need to book weeks in advance!
There is lots to do in the South Lakes whatever the weather or time of year. You will pass the Motor Museum on the way into Ulverston, and the Cumbrian Heavy Horse Centre is only a short drive away, as is the South Lakes Zoo (with pre-booking you can be a zoo-keeper for the day).
The centre of Windermere is half an hour away with all the lake attractions and the Beatrix Potter Trail. The kitchen is well-appointed with all the amenities and equipment you require to prepare a picnic or Sunday roast dinner. The immediate area around the cottage is a walkers’ and cyclists’ paradise with a selection of fells, pikes and woods to explore. Within 30 minutes’ drive you can be at Coniston Water, the site of the famous Donald Campbell water speed world record. A short 10 minutes’ drive away is the market town of Broughton-in-Furness. Broughton has excellent amenities including a selection of local shops, a tourist information centre and petrol station. In and around Broughton you will also find some of the excellent pubs, including several award winners, many offering good quality food alongside their real ales and roaring fires, you will be spoilt for choice as to where to dine out.
For a family day out there is plenty to offer such as South Lakes Safari Zoo at nearby Dalton, Muncaster Castle with its owl sanctuary, Eskdale Miniature Railway, the Lakes Aquarium and boat trips on Coniston Water and Lake Windermere. You’ll never be short of something to do.
