There are so many places to visit and so easy to get to. Take a trip to Totnes where there are many shops, markets and walks along the riverbank. Dartmoor is just a short car ride where you can see the ponies, walk the Tors or simply stop off in one of the many villages for a Devon cream tea. Paignton, Torquay and Brixham are also great places to visit, as are Exeter and Plymouth, both within 30 minutes’ drive. There are many National Trust properties including Agatha Christie’s summer home ’Greenway’, well worth a visit. For the children, there is Crealy Adventure park, or Go Ape in Haldon. If you are bringing a bicycle, there are many cycle ways off road to be explored, including Powderham Castle where there is a cycle track all along the estuary. Buckfastleigh, EnglandLittle Meadow is perfect for those looking for a holiday within Dartmoor National Park. Located in the pretty moorland village of Hexworthy, this cottage is perfect for small families or couples, especially those wanting to take their dog. This detached cottage sits within its own grounds and has a small stream to one side of the garden.
The cottage is a short walk away from the local pub which serves good food. From Little Meadow, access to the moor is easy. The West Dart River runs through the village and there are some magical spots for picnicking and having a paddle in the river, as well as a number of wonderful walks to be had directly from the cottage, following along the river and up onto Dartmoor.
During your stay, there is much to see and do. Just up the road is the curious world of Pixieland, a visitor attraction/garden gnome manufacturer! Widecombe-in-the-Moor boasts two excellent, characterful pubs serving locally sourced food, the world-famous church known as ‘Cathedral on the Moors’, a National Trust shop, a post office, gift shops and several tea rooms. Castle Drogo, a National Trust property, is the last castle to have been built in England.
Within 40 miles are the two picturesque villages of Chagford and Moretonhampstead, with historic inns, excellent pubs, tea rooms, curiosity shops, tennis courts and the Miniature Pony Centre. Or, perhaps pay a visit to Princetown with its famous gaol and visitors centre. The market towns of Tavistock and Ashburton offer a very good variety of shops and local amenities. Within 20 miles are Bigbury-on-Sea and Dawlish, with a beach and nature reserve. Slapton Sands and Torcross are 22 miles away, or Torquay which is within easy reach. Seaton, EnglandThe Little House is a charming, mid-terrace cottage nestled in the heart of the Axe Valley in the small village of Axmouth on the Dorset & Devon border. This well positioned home is a few minutes drive from the seaside town of Seaton, between the coastal towns of Lyme Regis and Sidmouth. There is a mile long level walk along the riverside to the pretty Axe Harbour and the magnificent mile long Seaton beach with an esplanade, with views to the cliffs and Jurassic coastline.
As you step inside the entrance hall, you will walk into the cosy and inviting living room which has plenty of comfortable seating, a Smart TV, DVD player, two sofas and a wood burner. The kitchen next door is fully equipped and the dining table in the conservatory is the perfect space for enjoying a home-cooked meal with your fellow guests, with a set of French doors opening out into the private tiered garden. The garden is fully enclosed and has an outdoor seating area where you can sip on your morning coffee and contemplate how to best spend your day. Heading up to the first floor, guests will find three well-presented bedrooms to retire to after each day of adventure. The master bedroom has a double bed, plenty of clothes storage and views out over the garden. The second bedroom has twin beds and the third has a 2ft 6in single bed (for child). Across the landing area is the family shower room which has a shower cubicle, toilet, wash basin and an LED mirror.
The house enjoys a very peaceful location on a country lane adjacent to a stream with sheep in the nearby fields, an abundance of local walks and bridle paths nearby. There is a children’s playground opposite which is ideal for families staying in the cottage, and there are two great local pubs in Axmouth serving food. The cottage sits at the upper end of the beautiful Axe Estuary, abundant with bird and wildlife. At the mouth of the estuary is Axmouth Harbour, home to a number of small local fishing and pleasure boats, and direct access to pebble beaches, ideal for rock-pooling, crabbing, fishing and water sports. Within a mile is the small town of Seaton which has a unique tramway running inland, alongside the estuary and Seaton Marshes Nature Reserve, to the medieval market town of Colyton. The tram is perfect for birdwatchers, transport enthusiasts or those who simply want to watch the beautiful riverside scenery glide by.
Only a short drive from the coastal resorts of Lyme Regis, Branscombe and Beer, this cottage is ideally placed to explore the World Heritage Jurassic coastline with its pretty beaches and fishing harbours. Also nearby is the market town of Axminster. Honiton is also well worth a visit, with some lovely cafés to enjoy after browsing in the antiques shops and the cathedral city of Exeter is another good day out. This wonderful stretch of east Devon coastline has a chain of pretty fishing villages and traditional seaside towns such as Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton.
