Strensall is located on the River Foss with a wide range of facilities including three pubs, a choice of grocery shops, post office, takeaway and a fish and chip shop. On the doorstep is York Golf Club and Strensall Common, a huge conservation area maintained by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and which is popular with birdwatchers.
Regular buses run from the village to the centre of the ancient walled city of York, 7 miles away. Steeped in history and brimming with attractions, York appeals to all ages. Visit the magnificent minster, the Jorvik Viking Centre and the Railway Museum, browse the art galleries and stroll along the cobbled streets and city walls. Tigh Na Mara or ’House by the Sea’ is one of four holiday cottages in Hunmanby Gap owned by a local Yorkshire family. Take the glass panelled staircase to the first floor and here you will find the master double bedroom. The vaulted ceiling and low doorway leading through to an en-suite bathroom really add to its character. Fold open the Velux window and step outside onto a small hidden balcony; the sea view from up here is simply stunning. A perfect spot for an early morning coffee! To the front of the property is a pretty cottage garden with borders packed with summer flowers. To the rear is an enclosed, dog-friendly garden with neatly trimmed lawn and seating, perfect for an al fresco breakfast.

A short walk down the hill is where you will find a quaint dog-friendly café and the beach is just beyond. A short drive away is the pretty seaside town of Filey and the harbour port of Scarborough. Both towns offer lovely walks along promenades and a plethora of seaside attractions, tea rooms, restaurants and shops. A visit to RSPB Bempton Cliffs is a must whilst staying at Tigh Na Mara, or why not travel a little further inland and enjoy the rolling countryside of the Yorkshire Wolds. The Snug at Delamere House is a modern annexe looking out onto its own private enclosed garden, bursting with colours in the spring and summer when the flowers bloom. There is a patio with a seating area so that you can enjoy the sunshine during your stay. The property set all on the ground floor, with designated off road parking on the driveway. Enter through the double glass doors which open in from the garden, bathing the living room in light. The living space is open planned, with a compact kitchen, a drop-leaf dining table as well as comfortable seating. You are just a short stroll away from Scagglethorpe’s warm and welcoming village pub, the true heart of the village. There is also a nearby play park for young children. There is a wide choice of places to visit nearby, with something for everyone. For history buffs Eden Camp is just 5-minutes away, a prisoner of war camp now transformed into a fascinating World War II museum. The stately home of Castle Howard is a short drive from the cottage, holding events throughout the year including the summer proms. Spend a day exploring the house and before sampling some of the cakes on offer from one of the tea rooms. The Christmas experience is also one of the very best in the country. There are other stately homes within a short distance of the property, including Duncombe Park and Nunnington Hall. Don’t forget the stunning gardens at Helmsley too.
This area is a fantastic base for both cyclists and walkers, with a large network of footpaths and country lanes. The famous market towns of Malton and Helmsley are within a few minutes’ drive and offer market days around their cobbled squares as well as a great array of shops, cafés and restaurants. Thornton-le-Dale is a picture perfect little village built around a little stream, ideal for a memorable day out. Less than 10 miles away is Pickering, nestled on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, where you can ride the heritage steam train across the beautiful moorland to the coastal town of Whitby. The ancient walled city of York with its beautiful minster and award winning-attractions is only a 30-minute drive away, while 30 minutes to the east takes you to beautiful Filey beach and its fabulous coastline. This single-storey accommodation has level access throughout with wide doorways meaning it is easily accessible and will appeal to all ages. The beautiful village of Brompton lies 8 miles to the west of Scarborough, a tranquil picturesque village home to the church where the poet William Wordsworth married. A picture postcard village with a small stream running down to a picnic area. Here you can feed the ducks and watch the swans and other wildlife.
The farmer’s hens roam freely around the village which gives that feeling of really being in the countryside and amongst the farming community. The house is in a quiet area next to the church and benefits from a large enclosed garden with woodland areas and lots of space for the children to run and play. There’s a Wendy house and a summer house that serve as a getaway for the kids, with game consoles and a TV. The forest is famous for its bike trails and in the past has been home to the World Championship Mountain Bike event. The visitor centre within the forest is popular all year round with its great café and the events that are organised for the children throughout the year. It’s also home to ‘Go Ape’ a high ropes adventure course with zip wires and swings.

Plenty of take-away outlets, restaurants, bars, pubs and shops are within a short stroll of the house, offering a fantastic range of eating options. You can walk to the town centre, the beach, Scarborough Castle or Peasholm Park within ten minutes. A 5-minute walk across North Marine Road provides breath-taking views of the North Bay and Scarborough Castle, with benches where you can rest for a while. You may catch a glimpse of the pods of dolphins that are regular visitors to the coastline.
A meandering path takes you down to the beach in less than 10 minutes. Once on the seafront over three miles of flat promenade provide the perfect opportunity to walk and explore all areas of the Victorian resort. Either head south below the hilltop castle towards the South Bay, Scarborough Spa and the Italian Gardens, or go north past rows of colourful beach huts towards the Sealife Centre and Scalby Mills. Buses operate continually along this route. Peasholm Park offers wooded walks, refreshments and a lake where boats and pedalos can be hired. The RSPB bird sanctuary is just along the coast at Bempton Cliffs where thousands of puffins, guillemots, and gannets perch along the rocks. There are viewing points from which to spot all the different breeds of seabirds that arrive every year, as well as the seals that sunbathe on the rocks below.
