Craven Garth Cottages are located in Rosedale, in the heart of the North York Moors National Park, on a family run working farm. All the cottages have been lovingly converted from old farm buildings and barns, and still retain much of their original character. Each property offers cosy, comfortable and well-equipped accommodation, providing an ideal base from which to explore the local moors and stunning coastline. There is a large paddock and gardens to unwind in and enjoy the stunning views and sunsets.

Rosedale offers a warm welcome to all ages, and is popular year round with families, walkers and cyclists alike. There are two pubs situated in Rosedale alongside two cafés on the village green, all serving delicious local produce. This is a lovely walking route from Craven Garth Cottages either by the quiet road or via the old railway line. The village boasts the fun and challenging Rosedale Abbey Golf Course, welcome to all abilities and open Easter to October. The Golf Course is situated next to Chimney Bank, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Rosedale. Also in the village is a contemporary glass studio, open to visitors all year round, selling handmade glass art made on-site.

Rosedale is perfect for enjoying anything outdoors, and the varied landscape provides endless footpaths where you can enjoy spectacular scenery. The owners can provide many local walking maps if required. The famous ‘Old Ironstone Railway’ walk runs all the way around the valley, and you can stop off at the lovely inn en-route for some local ales and traditional food, before continuing onwards to Rosedale Village. The area is increasingly favoured by cyclists, who are also welcome to cycle the old railway line. The Yorkshire Cycle Hub is 12 miles away at Fryup, offering cycle hire, alongside an excellent café where you can enjoy a piece of cake before setting off on your ride. Dalby Forest is well worth a visit and is also great for cycling, offering cycle hire and other adventure activities.

During your stay be sure to visit Ampleforth Abbey with its serene Abbey Church and grounds to explore at your leisure. Parking and entry is free, and Ampleforth boasts a great shop and tea room. Nearby Hutton-le-Hole, a picturesque village, offers a fantastic day out and even has its own Chocolate Factory. Visit Ryedale Folk Museum and sample the popular local ice cream and take a paddle in the stream. Fancy a stately home? Then look no further than Castle Howard, well worth a trip and a beautiful day out. The cottage is also within easy reach of Pickering with its many attractions including The North York Moors Railway which goes all the way to Whitby, where you can enjoy possibly the most famous fish and chips in the UK.

Situated beside the North York Moors National Park, yet only 3 miles from Scarborough’s golden beaches, this cluster of high quality holiday cottages enjoy views over open meadowland, Scarborough Castle and the sea. Scalby, a lovely rural village with a historic church, café/restaurant, shops and two local inns, is only a 15-minute walk from the cottages and, if visitors can bear to leave the comfort and special tranquillity of Barmoor, it is ideally located for walking, cycling or touring the glorious forests, moorland and seascapes which are virtually on the doorstep. Each cottage offers a ‘Drive/walk, good food guide’, compiled by the owners to maximise visitors’ holiday enjoyment.
Among Scarborough’s many attractions are a Sea Life Centre and Theatre in the Round (offering productions and films for all ages) as well as plenty of restaurants, cafés and evening entertainment. Sea trips are available from the harbour and coarse fishing is enjoyed at nearby Throxenby Mere.
The Forge Valley Woodland Reserve lies ½ mile walk from the cottages and quiet lanes lead directly to Langdale Forest. Golf courses and riding stables are found locally and the more energetic might like to tackle the nearby Cleveland Way long distance footpath, with its stunning views over land and sea. The inviting moorland countryside and picturesque villages of ‘Heartbeat’ fame are a joy to explore and a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway is a must.
A 30-minute drive up the coast leads to the many delights of Robin Hood’s Bay and the old port of Whitby, a fascinating historic town, traditionally associated with Count Dracula and in whose attractive harbour tall ships often lie at anchor. The great houses of Sledmere, Burton Agnes and Castle Howard are all within 20 miles of the cottages.

Granary Farm Cottages lie on the south facing slopes of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. This former farm is 1 mile from the village of Sawdon. Set in large landscaped gardens it is a quiet and relaxing holiday base from which to explore the surrounding countryside. Perfect for walks and cycle rides into the forest from the doorstep. Great for bird watching in the gardens or forest, with Raptor View Point a short drive away. The area also has dark skies so ideal for avid stargazers. Convenient for Scarborough, Whitby and York, and the market towns of Malton, Helmsley and Pickering with its steam railway. Castle Howard and Heartbeat country are an easy drive away. There is an award-winning butchers in the neighbouring village of Brompton. North Yorkshire Water Park is 6 miles from the properties. Breathtaking sea views of both the North and South Bays can be enjoyed from nearly all the rooms in this imposing, Grade II listed Georgian town house which is peacefully situated on the headland under the shadow of Scarborough’s historic castle and opposite St Mary’s church, the final resting place of Anne Brontë. Whilst retaining many original features, the house has been refurbished to an exceptional standard. The first and second floor bedrooms enjoy either North or South Bay views. The first floor bedroom has a super-kingsize bed, original tiled fireplace and a magnificent en-suite with a raised bath and separate shower. The three bedrooms on the second floor have, respectively, a kingsize oak bed, a French double bed and twin beds. In the lower-ground floor sitting room there is a living flame gas fire.
The property has a spectacular clifftop garden with 180-degree North Bay and castle views, as well as a hot tub. Positioned a 5-minute walk from the heart of the town and a 10-minute walk from the beach, this makes a perfect base for exploring Britain’s original seaside resort with its sandy, accredited North Bay beach, award-winning Sea Life Marine Sanctuary and working harbour with small fishing fleet. On the south side there are boat trips around the bay and a great choice of restaurants, bars, cafes and traditional seaside stalls. Music lovers can visit the Scarborough Spa, which stages regular concerts and is home to the UK’s only remaining professional seaside orchestra, book tickets to the Open Air Theatre (past performers include Elton John and Duran Duran) or enjoy live music or karaoke in the town’s lively pubs. The famous Stephen Joseph Theatre offers an impressive evening programme of theatre and film, including plays by Scarborough’s very own Alan Ayckbourn.
Shops and pubs are 220 yards from the house and the North Bay, Old Town and town centre attractions are within walking distance. Scarborough has superb independent shops, especially at the historic Indoor Market, and countless family-friendly attractions, such as the Alpamare water slides and the quaint North Bay Railway. For energetic visitors, there’s surfing, paddleboarding, bodyboarding, golf and outstanding walking, both by the sea and inland. Further north along the Heritage coast lie the smugglers’ coves of Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes, and the North York Moors National Park is easily accessible with its steam railway, pretty villages and spectacular scenery.

Situated at Staithes, near Whitby, these former World War I army bunkers are in an idyllic position close to the countryside and sea. Four of the barracks have been ingeniously and tastefully transformed to provide good quality accommodation retaining much rustic character and charm. The remaining four lodges retain their near original condition as a visual reminder of their former function. Situated just off the Cleveland Way, there are many fine moorland and cliff top walks. There is a golf course and driving range in Brotton, 6¾ miles away, and at Scaling Reservoir, 7¼ miles, there is sailing and fishing. There is a leisure centre 2 miles down the road and a 2-minute stroll down the cobbled street brings you to the centre of the picturesque fishing village with its small harbour nestling beneath rugged cliffs. Step back in time and walk the quaint narrow passages, as Captain James Cook himself must have done. Here in Staithes there are village shops, pubs, cafés and a restaurant, and in 2020 the village was featured on the BBC programme ’Gone Christmas Fishing’ with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer. Why not travel on Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express (the North Yorkshire Moors Railway) through ’Heartbeat’ country, or visit Whitby and its famous abbey which is 11 miles away.
