Pickering is a delight - old fashioned friendliness and an unhurried pace of life combine with charming old inns, 12th-century castle, museums, and remarkable medieval frescoes in the local church, and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway takes visitors on a nostalgic journey through spectacular heather-clad moorland scenery to Grosmont. City of York 26 miles. Castle Howard, setting for TV’s Brideshead Revisited, Nunnington Hall (NT), Duncombe Park, and Rievaulx Abbey, are just a few treasures to discover. York offers the majestic minster, the fascinating Jorvik Viking Centre, the Castle Museum, the National Railway Museum, and excellent shopping facilities. On the east coast lie Scarborough and Bridlington, the picturesque fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay, and Staithes, and the fascinating old port of Whitby, with its Captain Cook connections, as well as 3 miles of sandy beaches and a colourful harbour, while the popular resort of Scarborough is 17 miles away offering excellent shopping and family entertainment. The cottages have been converted with great flair by the owners, Mike and Sue Kitching, from the outbuildings of Hungate House. The delightful setting includes eight secluded gardens, courtyards and an orchard, as well as an enclosed play area with basket swing and wendy house for children. The gardens are beautiful and peaceful, and have been well kept, to ensure a relaxing environment. They are a real haven in a lovely Yorkshire town. Each cottage retains much character, with old stone arches, fireplaces and beams carefully retained. Immaculately maintained, warm, clean and superbly well-equipped with free high speed Wi-fi, these cottages are truly a ‘home from home’. No wonder so many visitors return time and again. The owners provide plenty of helpful information on the huge choice of places to visit, as well as menus from the local restaurants. Hungate is best summed up by a visitor who wrote, "There was nothing more we could have wished for in a holiday home. We loved the fire, the free logs and little touches such as fresh flowers – it felt like home. The children loved the freedom of the gardens and could not wait to get home from our excursions! Brewers Cottage nestles in the grounds of Cropton Brewery in the sleepy hamlet of Cropton within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Dating back almost 200 years this terraced holiday cottage offers modern, contemporary accommodation, yet retains many of the original features. The brewery was developed in 1984 and offers tours to sample some of the fine ales on offer. Ideally located for walking, cycling and exploring the heather clad moors. If coastal walks and stunning beaches are in order, you’ll find the Heritage Coast just 18 miles away, including Whitby, Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington. Shop 3 miles, pub and restaurant 20 yards.

Horcum View is a holiday bungalow located in the heart of Lockton with views over the North Yorkshire Moors. Peaceful location, with the occasional sound of the steam train chugging its way through the valley. Take a journey on the steam train (Levisham station ½ mile) through the heart of the National Park. North Yorkshire Moors are home to abbeys, castles and cycle/bridle paths. Visit Castle Howard, Yorkshire’s finest historic house and estate, or Eden Camp, a unique museum. Shop 6 miles, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

Swallowholm is a very homely, Grade II listed, stone built miner’s cottage set in a small hamlet in Arkengarthdale, surrounded by magnificent views. Ideally placed for walking, horse riding, fishing or just relaxing. A short stroll away is an 18th-century inn serving cask ales and excellent local food. Nearby Reeth (4 miles) has a selection of pubs, shops and quaint tea rooms, whilst Richmond market town with Georgian theatre, castle, museum and golf course is a short drive away, or make a breathtaking journey over the Stang to Barnard Castle. Craven Garth Cottages are located in Rosedale, in the heart of the North York Moors National Park, on a family run working farm. All the cottages have been lovingly converted from old farm buildings and barns, and still retain much of their original character. Rosedale offers a warm welcome to all ages, and is popular year round with families, walkers and cyclists alike. There are two pubs situated in Rosedale alongside two cafés on the village green, all serving delicious local produce. This is a lovely walking route from Craven Garth Cottages either by the quiet road or via the old railway line. The village boasts the fun and challenging Rosedale Abbey Golf Course, welcome to all abilities and open Easter to October. The Golf Course is situated next to Chimney Bank, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Rosedale. Also in the village is a contemporary glass studio, open to visitors all year round, selling handmade glass art made on-site.

Rosedale is perfect for enjoying anything outdoors, and the varied landscape provides endless footpaths where you can enjoy spectacular scenery. The owners can provide many local walking maps if required. The famous ‘Old Ironstone Railway’ walk runs all the way around the valley, and you can stop off at the lovely inn en-route for some local ales and traditional food, before continuing onwards to Rosedale Village. The area is increasingly favoured by cyclists, who are also welcome to cycle the old railway line. The Yorkshire Cycle Hub is 12 miles away at Fryup, offering cycle hire, alongside an excellent café where you can enjoy a piece of cake before setting off on your ride. Dalby Forest is well worth a visit and is also great for cycling, offering cycle hire and other adventure activities.

During your stay be sure to visit Ampleforth Abbey with its serene Abbey Church and grounds to explore at your leisure. Parking and entry is free, and Ampleforth boasts a great shop and tea room. Nearby Hutton-le-Hole, a picturesque village, offers a fantastic day out and even has its own Chocolate Factory. Granary Farm Cottages lie on the south facing slopes of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. This former farm is 1 mile from the village of Sawdon. Set in large landscaped gardens it is a quiet and relaxing holiday base from which to explore the surrounding countryside. Perfect for walks and cycle rides into the forest from the doorstep. Great for bird watching in the gardens or forest, with Raptor View Point a short drive away. The area also has dark skies so ideal for avid stargazers.
