This cosy detached cottage making a romantic retreat, is Grade II listed and dates back to 1760. It has been tastefully renovated to a very good standard and benefits from an underfloor heated limestone tiled floor throughout the ground floor. Outside there is a large, enclosed, riverside garden, on the opposite side of a road that leads directly into the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. It has a shared patio with a sitting-out area, a further riverside secluded seating area, garden furniture, BBQ and summerhouse. Although shared with the owners it is available to guests and their pets to enjoy at all times. Within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, East Ayton is a village just a few minutes’ drive from the seafront at Scarborough. The village has all the amenities you could wish for with a post office, shop, garage and local pub as well as an excellent fish restaurant. The cottage is just off the main street on the lane leading further into the National Park and towards Hackness. This property is an ideal place for the walkers or cyclists amongst you, with great trails right on your doorstep. From the large riverside orchard garden there are open views across the valley to the castle that dates back to 1390. Cycling is also very popular in the area as this forms part of the Tour de Yorkshire route. The Dalby Forest is close by with cycle trails for all abilities and home to the World Cup Trail, a challenging 4 mile route, or for beginners, there are plenty more leisurely routes. The cottage is an ideal base to visit all that Yorkshire has to offer from the North Yorkshire Moors to the Wolds and the beautiful east coast, and coarse fishing is available direct onto the River Derwent at the bottom of the garden with brown trout and grayling. On arrival, steps lead you up through the tiered garden to the front door. Stepping inside, the hallway leads you to the open plan living and dining area at the front of the property, and the kitchen at the rear. The open plan living area is a great size for entertaining in an evening, you can play board games at the large dining table or relax on the large corner sofa in front of the glow from the wood burner, as you have a movie night together. The kitchen is also spacious and enjoyable, with everything needed to create all of your favourite family meals. A back door from the kitchen leads you into the back garden, with steps leading up to the raised patio area, with outdoor seating. Up on the first floor, you have three wonderful bedrooms to choose from: the master kinsize bedroom has a dressing table in the bay window as well as an en-suite shower; a double bedroom; and a triple bunk room which has a double bed on the bottom and single bed on top. In Scarborough you have a great choice of attractions including Alpamare water park and spa, The Sea Life Centre and one of the largest open air theatres in Europe. Nearby for children is Flamingoland theme park and zoo as well as the Eden Camp war museum where you can step back in time. The seaside resorts of Filey, Flamborough Head and Bridlington are just a short drive away as well as the RSPB bird sanctuary at Bempton Cliffs. Here you will see lots of migrating birds perched on the chalk cliffs, including if you look carefully colourful puffins. To the north you have the beautiful coastal town of Whitby to visit, as well as quirky Robin Hoods Bay, both are quaint with cobbled streets and little independent shops and cafés to explore, as well as scenic views and beaches to enjoy. The city of York is just an hour away by car or there is a direct train from Scarborough right into the centre. The entrance hallway has beautiful handcrafted stairs, with wooden panelling made from the barn’s original reclaimed floorboards. Step through into the bespoke kitchen; this spacious room has its own island and is exceptionally well equipped. The adjoining living room is open plan with the dining area, with a wood burner to add to the charm. Glass doors open out from the living area giving you fabulous views out onto your paddock of wild flowers. The ground floor is complete with a toilet just off the entrance hallway, which has also been decorated beautifully. Upstairs are three incredible bedrooms, all with their own character and stylish flare. The first zip and link kingsize bedroom is a fun burst of colour, with its own en-suite shower room, whereas the master bedroom, with superking bed, is more muted with its own en suite bathroom which is the most delicious emerald green and gold. The third bedroom also has a kingsize zip and link bed, which can be made up as twin beds on request, under a beamed ceiling. There is also a family bathroom on this floor with both a freestanding bath as well as a shower. Take time to take in all of the careful attention to detail, such as the original wooden shutters on the windows.
West Ayton is a pretty village in the North York Moors National Park, with a couple of pubs serving meals as well as the convenience of a shop and garage. There are many beautiful places to visit for a day out nearby including the picture perfect village of Thornton-le-Dale, with little cafés, a chocolatier and a bakery beside a little stream, as well as the ancient market town of Pickering where you can board the North York Moors steam train. There is a host of wonderful walking trails to discover, including many at Dalby Forest which is beautiful throughout all the seasons and has a tree top zip wire trail for the more adventurous.
In around a 15-minute drive you can be at the coast, walking along the long golden stretch of sand in Scarborough, with the historic seafaring town of Whitby nearby. Whitby boasts a fascinating history, with tales of Captain Cook, smugglers, Vikings and even Dracula, ideal for a day out to remember.
