The village of Quebec has a welcoming community, with a lovely tearoom opposite serving everything from a hearty breakfast to afternoon tea, and an assortment of pubs within a mile all serving good hearty meals. Nearby, the village of Lanchester has a good selection of restaurants, pubs and shops, whilst the villages of Langley Park and Esh Winning have well stocked stores, butcher and bakery.

This is a great spot for walkers and cyclists with many established public footpaths from the village leading into the scenic countryside of County Durham. Close by, is the historic City of Durham, awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status, where you can visit the cathedral and castle or enjoy beautiful riverside walks, take a boat out on the river or a leisurely riverboat cruise. The Lumiere Festival takes place every couple of years in November and brings the city to life with live art, music and light shows in the open air theatre that the city becomes.

Visit the fabulous Kynren outdoor spectacle in nearby Bishop Auckland (but do book in advance). A little further afield but still within an easy 30-minute drive, guests will be able to take a day trip out to the popular Beamish Living Museum, see the famous Angel of the North statue in Gateshead, enjoy a day’s shopping at the Metro Centre and explore the vibrant city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The heritage coast is within an hour’s drive, making Quebec a perfect location.

The National Trust site at Gibside is 3 miles, take a step back in time at Beamish the Living Museum of the North (8 miles), or head further north to Hadrian’s Wall and visit the Sill discovery centre and Roman fort at Vindolanda (30 miles). The cosmopolitan City of Newcastle (10 miles) with a host of shops and restaurants and galleries. For those seeking the best of both worlds, Ryton most certainly holds the key. It is picturesque and close to the city, so location is perfect. There is plenty to see and do in the area including golfing, fishing, and cycling. Some of the best golf courses are on the doorstep of Emmaville, including Close House Golf Club, Tyneside Golf Course, and Ryton Golf Club, keen golfers really are spoilt for choice here! If golfing isn’t your thing head to Stargate Ponds and Bewes Hills for some fishing, a fantastic spot enjoyed by many. For those that love being out surrounded by nature, wildlife, and unspoilt natural beauty head to Ryton Willows nature reserve, which is great for riverside walks with its woodland, grassland and ponds. It proves a real beautiful spot to sit and relax with a picnic.
The Tyne is still tidal at Ryton. As a consequence of this, the water is slightly salty, and this influences the flowers growing on the bankside. Look out in summer for the purple-blue heads of sea aster. Common seals are frequently seen up the river, attracted by the wide range of fish, including salmon. Birds to see along the river include grey heron, kingfisher and goosander. Ryton Willows also sits on the site of the only Registered Battlefield in Tyne and Wear. The Battle of Newburn Ford, which took place on 28th August 1640, was an important event leading up to the start of the English Civil War.
After a fun filled day why not enjoy a pint of ale at one of the local pubs, which also serves great food. Throughout the year there are a number of events, one big event is Ryton’s Annual Music Festival which takes place in February and March each year, It has been held in the village for more than 60 years, and offers a variety of music and drama, including choral singing and mime. Tucked away in a peaceful and secluded village setting, these five comfortably furnished holiday cottages are set in an idyllic location, only 5 miles from the spectacular Bamburgh Castle and one of the longest sandy beaches in England, and within a few minutes’ drive of Seahouses, where regular boat trips depart for the Farne Islands. Between the Cheviots and the sea, there is easy touring through the beautiful countryside with its numerous castles, stately homes and NT properties. Furnished to a high standard, and close to the owners’ home, Fordson offers single-storey accommodation and Ferguson is a detached two-storey cottage. The Mill House stands as a detached converted barn, with Waren View and The Granary Cottage forming an adjoining pair. This is an ideal choice for family holidays, with use of a very pleasant lawned area by a stream. There is also shared use of the owners’ hard tennis court nearby.

Warenford Village serves as an excellent base from which to discover Northumberland and the Scottish border country. Just 4 miles distant lies Budle Bay, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as an SSSI, with the ancient walled town of Berwick-upon-Tweed (15 miles) and the Duchess of Northumberland’s ornamental gardens a short drive away. Created to rival the best in Europe, the gardens are contemporary in design and include waterfalls and cascading plumes set within landscaped grounds with themed planted areas. Also sure to delight both young and old alike is a visit to neighbouring Alnwick Castle, which served as the location for the Harry Potter films. Home of the Percy family, it stands as the second largest inhabited castle in England after Windsor Castle, with some of its rooms open to the public and displaying a wealth of decorative and fine art.

Within easy reach, too, is Holy Island – renowned for its medieval religious heritage, priory and picturesque castle – and also known by its Anglo-Saxon name of Lindisfarne. Accessed by a paved causeway at low tide, the island is popular with bird-watchers and nature lovers, with the north-western portion of the island being maintained as a nature reserve, where terns, plovers and seals can be observed.
