May Cottage is a tastefully renovated cottage on one level in a rural location with contemporary furnishings throughout and a sunny rear garden. Rendham’s traditional village pub, serving local beers and good food, is just steps from the self-catering cottage and the historic village church is across the road. This semi-detached cottage with patio garden is well laid out with the dining room at the heart and the kitchen leading off of it to one side and the living room to the other with a hatch between the two. There are two bedrooms, one with a super king zip and link bed with a separate shower room and the other bedroom with a kingsized bed and an en-suite bathroom.

There are three great pubs, and you are surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside. The cottage has been meticulously restored, the deep character and history has been rejuvenated to respect its heyday in the late 14th-century as a council meeting house at the hight of the wool trade. With vaulted ceilings, a variety of original period features, wood burner and private enclosed garden, this wonderful cottage resonates with old world rural charm and is the perfect place to escape the hectic modern world and explore the bucolic delights of Suffolk. The living room boasts a multitude of wooden beams, a rare arched door frame and a large inglenook fireplace with wood burner, perfect to snuggle beside on cooler evenings. The kitchen is well equipped to permit dining from home, and the stable doors opens into a private mature garden with a bricked terrace, and a small lawned area, perfect for alfresco dining. There is also the original well that has a safety grill fitted.
Upstairs is an open plan drawing room, a perfect spot for reading, relaxing and working. In one corner of the wall there is a surviving patch of an original wall painting thought to be five-hundred years old. There are two equally impressive bedrooms, one with large super-king sized bed and the other having a king-sized double bed. The main bathroom has been cleverly configured around the architecture of the room, boasting an oval bath with shower over, and there is also a second separate toilet.

The Nest is a beautiful, self-contained one-bedroom cottage situated next to the main farmhouse. It can sleep up to three adults or two adults with two children. It’s the perfect location for those wishing to explore the local area and is ideal for those interested in walking and wildlife. The living room is a former conservatory with a cosy roof and has underfloor heating to ensure comfort all year round. The living room has a double sofa bed, TV and dining table. You’ll also find a selection of games and toys to keep you entertained, and books and maps to help you whilst exploring the area. The small but perfectly formed kitchen has everything you need, with a full oven, gas hob, microwave and fridge. You’ll find some of the basics such as cooking oil, salt, pepper etc already in the cupboards. The bedroom features a super kingsize bed, reading lights, built-in wardrobes with a full-length mirror and French doors opening up onto the private garden. It’s a bright and airy room, but once you’ve drawn the curtains and dimmed the lights it’s the ideal place to cosy up with a good book. Just off the bedroom is a large shower room, with a walk-in shower, twin vanity units and toilet. The garden has a seating area, with gas BBQ and a chimnea with views out across the farm fields allowing you to listen to the birdsong.
We’ve made sure you don’t need to pack too heavily, with games, toys for the kids, DVDs, books, picnic blanket, flask, Tupperware, children’s cups, plates and cutlery all provided. We can even lend camping chairs, beach shelters and buckets and spades if needed. Don’t worry we haven’t forgotten your four-legged friend, there’s bowls, blankets, poo bags and a little treat ready for their arrival too.

Just 400 yards from the cottage onto Marsh Lane is a footpath where you can walk alongside the river. The village of Gillingham sits on the Norfolk and Suffolk border, located in the Broads National Park where the River Waveney runs through. Beccles town offers independent boutiques and chain shops, a great collection of eateries including fine dining and many cafés serving home made cakes and savouries. The weekly market is excellent for all things local should you wish to enjoy a night of cooking and dining in. The Broads National Park is very popular, best enjoyed on the waterways with kayaks, canoes and day boat motor launches for a more leisurely pace. Alternatively sit back and enjoy a guided boat tour, where you can just soak up the incredible national park. Don’t forget to enjoy a swim at the local Lido open air heated swimming pool, popular with many local swimmers. Norwich (18 miles) a bustling cathedral city with culture, heritage, excellent shopping and entertainment for all. Watch the weekly speed boat racing (in season) on Oulton Broad, 9 miles. A delightful, tastefully decorated cottage within walking distance of the beach, shops, restaurants, and pubs on the unique Mersea Island where you can enjoy kayaking, paddle boarding, and sailing. The jetty is a great place for crabbing and boat tours are available.
Mersea gets cut off for about an hour when there is a very high tide, usually once a month, so it’s worthwhile checking the tides, all adding to the uniqueness and charm. It is a beautiful island with lots of coastal and nature walks, seafood restaurants with the famous Mersea oysters, delis, takeaways, supermarkets, and child-friendly pubs with craft beer. Why not visit Mersea Island vineyard and brewery, where a beer festival is held at Easter and you can buy real ale, wines, and even Mersea Island gin?
The Mersea Regatta, which has been running since 1838, is held every August and should not be missed. There is a variety of rowing races, an outboard motor balloon race, a swimming race, and ‘walking The Greasy Pole’, and ends in a firework display in the evening.
If you can tear yourself away from this peaceful beautiful island, then the historic town of Colchester is a 20-minute drive with shops, restaurants, a castle, and a museum. Castle Park offers something for all ages with a play park, bouncy castle, crazy golf, boating lake, and bandstand. Why not watch a game of cricket at the Essex Cricket Ground adjacent to the park? Colchester United football ground also hosts concerts and shows all year round, and the park has concerts in the summer. Colchester Zoo is a great day out and home to over 160 species, set in 60 acres of parkland and lakes.
Dedham Vale, known as Constable Country and a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is a 35-minute drive with beautiful walks and activities for all ages. If the children are wanting amusements and rides, a 40-minute drive takes you to the East Coast where you will find Walton-on-the Naze, Clacton, and Frinton. All in all, this is the perfect location for an enjoyable holiday.
