Surrounded by glorious open countryside where walks can be enjoyed direct from the doorstep, and being located on the edge of the Peak District National Park, it opens a whole host of other opportunities. It is also perfect for cycling, with keen cyclists able to re-create routes used in the Tour de Yorkshire. Langsett village, just over a mile away, is home to a traditional local pub, café and coffee shop, and the neighbouring market town of Penistone can be reached in just 10 minutes. For serious shoppers, Meadowhall is around 20 minutes away and Holmfirth, most famous from Last of the Summer Wine can be reached in around 15 minutes. The Derwent Reservoir, once used by the Dambusters to practise low level flying, is around 45 minutes away, and for those with children, Cannon Hall Farm (famous from the Channel 5 show), Cliffe House and Wentworth Castle Gardens are both nearby. Just 2 miles from the popular village of Uppermill, a village which is fast becoming a rival to the trendiest parts of south Manchester, but in a semi rural environment. Uppermill is popular with walkers, cyclists and nature lovers alike with the immediate area surrounded by beautiful countryside such as the spectacular Dovestone Reservoir which is just 10 minutes away, and backs onto the Peak District National Park and all it has to offer. For those bringing their four-legged friends, warm water dog wash facilities are also provided at the property. The Diggle end of the Standedge Tunnel is nearby and Uppermill together with a bustling high street full of restaurants, bars and swish cafés also offers canal boats tours and both canal and riverside walks. Just 5 minutes in the other direction is the small town of Mossley, and uniquely is where the historic counties of Lancashire, Cheshire and the West Riding of Yorkshire all meet.
Around an hours scenic car journey across the moors will take you to the tourist hotspots of artsy Hebden Bridge and fabulous Haworth with its cobbled high street, most famous for its Bronte heritage. Holmfirth most recognisable from Last of the Summer Wine, and the bright lights of Manchester can be reached in around 30 minutes or the city of Leeds in around an hour by car or via the local railway station less than a mile away. Two good food serving pubs are within easy walking distance, and other local attractions include the annual ‘Yanks’ weekend held each August (Dobcross was used as a filming location for the blockbuster ‘Yanks’ starring Richard Gere) and the ‘Whit Friday Brass Band Contest’, often described as ’the greatest free show on Earth’. Widely recognised as the back drop for the record breaking BBC comedy Last of the Summer Wine, you can take a tour around the variety of film locations, and being located on the edge of the fabulous Peak District National Park means there are endless outdoor opportunities for walkers. Keen cyclists will relish the chance to recreate the 2015 Tour de Yorkshire at Holme Moss, and if you can bear to tear yourself away from the area there’s the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Cannon Hall Farm around 30 minutes away and the cities of both Manchester and Leeds in around an hour. Brontë Country is nearby, offering lots of wonderful walking routes across the moors, and for those keen on cycling, why not try a section of the Tour de France route that runs through Keighley and Haworth? For a more relaxing way to explore the area, hop on the Worth Valley Steam Train from Keighley Station, which takes you on a 5-mile journey through the Haworth moors and on to Oxenhope, once home to the Brontë Sisters. The village of Haworth, 4 miles, is well worth a visit with its pretty cobbled streets lined with bunting and old-fashioned windows giving you a glimpse of the wares within. There is an array of antique shops, independent bookstores, pavement cafés, and restaurants, plus the Brontë Parsonage Museum. The market town of Skipton, also known as ‘The Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales’, 13 miles, is another great day out, with a tempting selection of bars and restaurants, a medieval castle, and bustling street markets.
You can also take a stroll along the Leeds and Liverpool canal that runs through, or simply watch the barges chug past from a bar overlooking the water. Grab a delicious afternoon tea at Betty’s Tea room in Ilkley and head to Bolton Abbey for a picture-perfect picnic beside the river.
