This tastefully styled apartment makes an ideal retreat for couples or families. Steeped in history, it forms a wing of Gilbert White’s House which is a leading visitor attraction, and boasts 30 acres of beautifully landscaped, tranquil gardens and parkland, a shop, museum and café. Guests are invited to enjoy unlimited visits to the museum, which focuses on the lives and adventures of two members of the Oates Family, Captain Lawrence Oates and his uncle, Frank Oates, both pioneers and explorers of the natural world. The property has been restored (2018) and offers comfortable and welcoming accommodation set over three floors. Guests can access the grounds anytime, dogs are welcome if they are kept on a lead (during out of hours dogs can be off lead in our Ewell field).
Over 250 years ago, Selborne and its surrounding landscape inspired Gilbert White to write about his lifelong investigation of the natural world, producing his world-famous book, The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne, published in 1789. His book was important in shaping our everyday view of the relations between humans and nature. He was always a keen gardener who became closely interested in the natural world around him, and grew a wide range of traditional and experimental fruit and vegetables. He was the first person in this area to grow potatoes and began recording methodically what he sowed and reaped, the weather, temperature and other details. This he went on to call his ‘Garden Kalendar’.
The house that Gilbert White’s family moved into when he was about 7 or 8 years old, would have been a two up, two down, but over subsequent years, lots of extensions and additions were made, creating the house you see today. Descriptions in White’s own correspondence were used to recreate the rooms as they used to be and they include a chair he used at Oriel College, Oxford (loaned from the college), items of contemporary furniture, family portraits and bed hangings embroidered for him by his aunts. You can listen to a conversation Gilbert had with his sister-in-law in the old kitchen where you can learn more about his household and life in Selborne during Gilbert’s time.
Selborne also has a pottery, a pub and village shop and there is so much to discover in this popular part of Hampshire. The town of Alton is nearby, where there are plenty of restaurants and shops, as well as a mainline railway station, The Watercress Steam Railway and also Jane Austen’s House at nearby Chawton. Other places of interest to visit include Portsmouth with the Spinnaker Tower, HMS Warrior and HMS Victory, as well as waterside dining, designer shopping and ferry trips to the Isle of Wight. Also within easy driving distance are Winchester Cathedral, King Arthur’s Round Table, Southampton with its maritime history, The New Forest, historic Chichester with cathedral, festival theatre, Goodwood Racecourse, beaches at The Witterings or Hayling Island, Marwell Zoo, Paultons Park with Peppa Pig World and Birdworld. Nearby in sleepy Selborne you can walk up the famous zig-zag pathway, enjoy the views and explore the hangers, or visit Gilbert White’s House and The Oates Collection. This hidden gem was home to naturalist Gilbert White, author of `The Natural History of Selborne’ and boasts a wonderful 20-acre garden. A country getaway but within easy reach of all the amenities you could need in the nearby town of Basingstoke. This lovely cottage has been fully decorated using high quality paints and fabrics, giving guests a truly wonderful experience and comfortable accommodation.
On the ground floor is the cosy living room with an open fire and open plan kitchen/dining area, with everything you will need to prepare a snack or a hearty three course meal. The property accommodates up to six guests in the three first floor bedrooms.
Club cottage is next to the Estate Club which is open on an ad hoc basis over the weekends and will serve you a very reasonably priced beverage, or a 1.5 mile walk across footpaths takes you to the nearest pub.There is a private swimming pool 2 minutes from the cottage for hire at an extra cost during summer months, subject to availablility.

On the coast lie the cities of Portsmouth and Southampton both within an hour’s drive with all their attractions, shopping and cruise terminal. There are also plenty of local festivals to attend to incklude Farnborough Air show (20 miles), Ascot Racecourse with its Royal Ascot meeting takes place in June (30 miles), Henley on Thames with its Royal Regatta is also in June (38 miles), Goodwood, home to the Goodwood Revival, Festival of Speed and horse racing (38 miles), Boomtown Festival in August (10 miles) and Newbury Show (24 miles).

Lilypad is a newly built home in a peaceful residential area within walking distance to the high street of Ringwood. Downstairs there is an open plan kitchen, living and dining room with a 43-inch smart tv. In the kitchen there is a fridge freezer, dishwasher, gas hob and electric oven with all the equipment you need to cook a meal to enjoy together. There is a convenient downstairs toilet and there is underfloor heating on the ground floor of this property. Upstairs is a king bedroom and a double bedroom both with 32-inch smart TVs. The family bathroom has a shower over the bath and there is a washer dryer in the cupboard. At the front of the property there is a small patio area with a small outdoor seating area and there is parking available for 1 car and a locked bike store.
Ringwood high street is within walking distance, this historic town comprises of a rich mixture of architecture including buildings which are thatched, Georgian, modern, and historic buildings lining the streets. A stroll along west street will take you to the Jubilee Gardens with a millstream running through which once powered the corn mill. There is a variety of independent shops in Ringwood along with cafes and eateries. Ringwood Brewery is well worth a visit during your time here, and you can even book a tour to sample the local beers. Ringwood has a weekly market as well as several farm shops within driving distance for local produce. For walkers and cyclists, the Castleman trail is easily accessible from Bickerley Road, this follows the old train route between Dorchester and Southampton.
For days out you must visit the New Forest with its free roaming horses, cattle and donkeys and an abundance of unique villages and pubs throughout. Moors Valley is fantastic for walking and cycling within the forest and you can even book an experience at Go Ape to climb among the treetops. There is the New Forest Water Park with a variety of water sports and a giant inflatable obstacle course on the water which is a fantastic day out. For fishing a day license can be purchased at the tackle shop for fishing on the River Avon with the chance to catch a variety of fish including Pike, Chub and Carp. The beaches of Southbourne and Avon Beach are within a half hour drive, with a mixture of sandy areas and pebbled area. Other nearby days out include Beaulieu Motor Museum, Liberty’s Owl and Reptile Centre, Dorset Heavy Horse Farm, Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary, and you can get a ferry to the Isle of Wight for a day trip! Lilypad provides the perfect home to base yourselves while exploring the nearby areas to make those memories on your holiday.

This pretty, detached, ‘chocolate box’, thatched holiday cottage lies a few miles from the Dorset coast, on the edge of the New Forest National Park which is hugely popular for excellent walks, cycling and horse-riding routes. There’s also golf available nearby. The cottage is an ideal retreat for families, with many character features and a hot tub in the garden’s summer house. There are plenty of thoughtful extras for guests’ enjoyment, including six TVs, Bluetooth stereo and Wi-Wfi. Enjoy sandy beaches at Mudeford, Bournemouth and Poole, or visit Beaulieu, Exbury Gardens and Lymington. Burley and Christchurch are just 3 miles away. Shop ⅓ mile and nearest pub 80 meters. Village has three good pubs in total.
