The pretty village of Hamsterley, situated between Teesdale and Weardale, is the setting for this charming, detached holiday cottage. Converted from former farm buildings the cottage offers contemporary open plan living and dining areas, with granite work surfaces in the kitchen. Upstairs are two bedrooms, one with a double bed, one with twin beds. A family bathroom completes the picture. There is also a private patio and parking area, and shared use of the owner’s 17-acre grounds. Adjoining the house and accessed via the kitchen is a covered verandah with blinds for privacy, which houses a fabulous hot tub, with plenty of space for all four guests. What better way to relax after a day’s adventures exploring the area!
The forest has way-marked walks, cycle ways and a visitor centre, whilst the Durham Dales has a plethora of beautiful scenery, including High Force in Upper Teesdale with its 70ft waterfall.
The university city of Durham, 14 miles away, stands on the River Wear, with its Romanesque cathedral, Norman castle, cobbled streets and independent shops.
No trip to Durham would be complete with a visit to the Beamish Living Museum of the North, an open-air museum bringing to life history from the 1820s through to the 1950s. You can easily get around the cobbled streets on foot or by tram, hopping on and off and popping in and out of shops and houses of a bygone era.
Within an hour’s drive are the Northumberland beaches and castles including Bamburgh, Alnwick and Warkworth. Shop 5 miles, pub and restaurant 200 yards.

With Coatham Woods on your doorstep, the barn is a perfect retreat for walkers and nature enthusiasts. Explore its vibrant woodland habitat during your stay, bursting with wildlife and various species for you to discover. Within a 15-minute drive, visit the town of Yarm, host to fabulous restaurants, boutique shops, cafés and pubs, and just an hour’s drive from the vibrant cities of York, Newcastle, Durham and Harrogate.
Other nearby attractions include Roseberry Topping, a hilltop walk with incredible views over North Yorkshire, or enjoy a day out in Helmsley visiting the castle and walled garden. Enjoy a stroll around Osmotherly and the local reservoir. Visit Barnard Castle, walk around the castle ruins, lovely park, river walks, and the famous Bowes Museum. If you are a lover of the coast, this area has some of the best beaches! Head across to Saltburn-by-the-Sea and take a ride on the funicular railway, amble the quirky shops or take a beach walk and enjoy the fresh air. A little further is the seaside town of Whitby, famed for Bram Stoker’s ’Dracula’, with beautiful coastline, local history, quirky shops, harbour and boat rides, and of course not leaving without a feast of their famous fish and chips! Raven Cottage is ideally situated for walkers and cyclists wishing to explore the beautiful countryside of Teesdale, or for those seeking a more leisurely stay in one of the most historic and scenic towns in the region. Barnard Castle is a market town in Teesdale, on the site of a Roman ford which crosses the river. The ruins of the medieval castle and cobble streets, yards and back lanes are well worth seeing. From the town there is excellent walking with the Pennine and Teesdale Ways, River Tees and the waterfalls at High Force all nearby.
Barnard Castle is known as the Gateway to Teesdale in the dramatic and inspiring valley of the turbulent River Tees. the traditional market town is full of character, combined with the buzz of an eclectic collection of designer clothes and interiors shops, cafes and restaurants. The jewel in the crown must be the Bowes Museum, built in the style of a French chateau and housing an internationally-acclaimed collection of European fine arts, ceramics and paintings. Not to be missed is the silver life-sized swan at the Bowes Museum, this mechanical masterpiece is incredibly lifelike and it actually moves as it preens its feathers on a shimmering metallic pool. Other attractions include Auckland Castle, Raby Castle, High Force Waterfall, The Forbidden Corner at Leyburn, Duncombe Park, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Gardens, which can all be reached in under an hour.

Opposite the cottage is a children’s park at the foot of Steeley Hill Wood, which boasts some lovely local walks. If you fancy popping out for breakfast, lunch or coffee and cake, a 5-minute drive will take you to the popular garden centre which is also home to a reptile house, birds of prey, duck pond and children’s play area.

You may also like to take a trip to Bishop Auckland to see the epic tale of England at the annual event called Kynren. This amazing spectacle spans 2000 years of history, myth and legend, starting at the end of June until mid-September. With fireworks and battle re-enactments this is an incredible live show.
