The cottage is situated in beautiful Raydale, a rural and unspoilt area of Wensleydale. It is surrounded by traditional farming country and ringed by high fells.
In the distance the dramatic peak of Addleborough can be seen and Lake Semerwater is a pleasant walk away. It is handy for many of the areas famous attractions, including the bustling little market town of Hawes and the pretty villages of Bainbridge and Askrigg, with its pub which was used as the local in the James Herriot series ’All Creatures Great and Small’.
Raydale is a haven for wildlife, with hares and deer often sighted in the surrounding fields at dawn and dusk, along with a wide variety of upland bird life including pheasant, partridge, curlew, duck and of course, Lake Semerwater stocked with a variety of fish. The hamlet of Marsett is set high in the hills above Bainbridge, providing far reaching panoramic views of the dales and fells beyond. Marsett itself has true rustic country charm as cattle and sheep can roam freely on the village green. Horse riding and fishing nearby. Shop, pub and restaurant 3½ miles.

The surrounding countryside views are superb, and there is excellent walking from the doorstep. Long distance footpaths along this area’s Heritage coastline, and the Cleveland Way, offer perfect terrain for walkers and cyclists. Visit Ryedale Folk Museum and Rosedale Abbey, or for a day out, try the North York Moors Railway. Whitby has miles of sandy beaches and an ancient abbey overlooking its harbour. Scarborough, Staithes, Runswick Bay and Sandsend are within 20 miles. Horse racing at Thirsk, Wetherby and York, 25 miles. Helmsley has Duncombe Park and a castle. The quaint fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay, with its hidden cobbled streets and smuggling history, is just a 5-mile drive and the historic port of Whitby, 11 miles, is renowned for its ancient abbey and connections with Captain James Cook and Count Dracula, not forgetting its famous fish and chips! The traditional seaside resort of Scarborough, 10 miles, offers miles of sandy beaches, fishing and speedboat trips, the Rotunda Museum, Stephen Joseph Theatre and musical concerts at The Spa and in Peasholme Park. Murmuration Cottage is situated in a fantastic location, just off one of Whitby’s main streets in the town centre, yet hidden away on Rose and Crown Yard. This terraced cottage is named after the bird formations which you can see from the windows looking out towards the Abbey. Perfect for a romantic break or a small family, Murmuration Cottage has something for everyone. The more than adequate kitchen is situated on the lower level, a comfortable living room is on the first floor, and on the second floor are the bedrooms. There is a spectacular view from the rear of the cottage of the Abbey and the East Cliff.

The wonderful gothic town of Whitby has something for everyone, from Whitby Abbey to the old town and its cobbled back streets complete with bazaars. No visit to Whitby is complete without challenging the 199 steps to the top of the town and Abbey; it’s definitely worth the effort for the view alone. Whitby plays host to regular events such as the Steampunk Weekend, the Whitby Regatta and the now world famous Goth Weekender.

This is also the perfect place to make as your base for exploring the North York Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Heritage Coast. Travel by steam train into the heart of ‘Heartbeat’ country or take a fishing trip out to sea on one of the many boat trips that leave the harbour with the hope of seeing whales, seals or dolphins. The Cleveland Way snakes along the coast and is a must for those who enjoy the great outdoors. Robin Hood’s Bay and Runswick Bay are just some of the highlights along the coast, whilst the medieval walled city of York is just an hours’ drive or train ride away. The traditional seaside town of Scarborough is just down the coast with its North and South Bays, plus the open-air theatre which hosts many summertime concerts with international stars. Situated at the foot of the North York Moors National Park, Weaver’s Cottage, restored in 2019, retains lots of character and original features. This pretty row of terraced cottages was home to some of the weavers that worked in the mills that were dotted in Pickering and the surrounding villages. The cottage has the added bonus of private parking for two cars as well as a rear courtyard area.

Pickering is a bustling market town with lots of restaurants, wine bars and local pubs. There’s a market every Monday held down the high street where locals and tourists enjoy the bargains. Situated just a 5-minute walk from the North York Moors steam railway, and for those train enthusiasts amongst you, this makes for a dream holiday. You can catch the steam train from Pickering and travel over the North York Moors National Park to Whitby. Stop off at the village of Goathland, home to the fictional village of Aidensfield in the popular TV programme ’Heartbeat’.

Whitby is a bustling seaside town with its majestic abbey standing proud on the headland reached by 199 steps from the cobbled streets lined with independent shops and cafés. Scarborough and Filey lie to the east of Pickering, both fantastic seaside resorts with award winning beaches. The Dalby Forest is a short drive or bike ride from the cottage and is home to one of the World Cup Mountain Bike Trials, and there are challenging runs as well as the easy routes for beginners. The Dalby Forest is also home to ’Go Ape’, a great high rope adventure course through the forest. Just a 10-minute drive away is Flamingo Land Theme Park with exhilarating rides and a fantastic zoo making for a great family day out. Beach 19 miles.
