Head into Chatton: a gorgeous country village nestled in the pretty Northumbrian Valley, bordered by the Cheviots. Keen walkers are sure to be impressed by St Cuthberts Way, a 100-kilometre long-distance trail between the Scottish Borders town of Melrose and Lindisfarne off the coast of Northumberland, named after a 7th-century saint. The nearby town of Wooler is set along the last leg of the journey, so you needn’t traverse the full length. Wooler itself is just under 4 miles away and features a good range of shops, pubs, restaurants, and facilities. Depending on the time of year, you might catch a glimpse of the friendly seals and puffins that visit the islands’ shores. On entering to the property, there is a large porch for storing all your outdoor equipment and outside is a storage area for bicycles. The owners provide a welcome tea tray and have added maps which shows which fields and walks you can have access too. In spring the owners are happy to show you the lambs and answer any of your questions.
The wonderful National Trust Property of Wallington Hall and Gardens is only 5 miles away. Matfen Hall, Spa and Golf Centre is only 10 miles, and you can drive down to Corbridge in 20 minutes. This is a lovely old Roman town with plenty of lovely pubs and cafés. The pick-your-own fruit farm and café is only half an hour for you to enjoy in summer. You really can travel all over the county from Newonstead Bothy, then come home and relax in this lovely location.

Hadrian’s Wall is around 40 miles, while the border towns in Scotland are a mere 32 miles and are steeped in history. Visit Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland and featured in some Harry Potter scenes, only 18 miles away. Shepherd’s Cottage epitomises a country break with stunning walks right from the door overlooking the woods at Cragside National Trust and the Simonside Hills in the distance. Surrounded by sheep and wildlife set on the edge of this large working farm, the cottage is right at the end of farmland away from the farm buildings in its own peaceful spot half a mile further down the road. A wonderful walk only 15 minutes takes you to the private waterfall which shares a boundary with Cragside, and Cragside House is only a few minutes’ drive, a glorious National Trust house, the first in the world to be powered by hydroelectricity.

Rothbury is a pretty, small market town with plenty of good places to eat and pubs to visit, as well as a riverside park and bespoke shops. Nearby Longframlington has an award-winning café and two friendly village pubs.

Venture further afield in all directions, perhaps spend a day on the heritage coast peppered with castles and friendly villages, explore the miles of sandy beaches. Or travel over to Hadrian’s Wall and explore a Roman fort or even walk some of the historic wall. Alnwick castle and gardens is only 14 miles where a day spent exploring the home of the Duke of Northumberland shouldn’t be missed, home to some Harry Potter and Downton Abbey scenes, the castle is in the town where you can explore the cobbled streets, inns and cafés whilst there.
