The Scar is a sandbank which juts out into Loch Ryan, and home to one of the largest colonies of nesting migrant terns in the region. From a historical perspective, during the Second World War, Wig Bay was used as a base for the flying Catalina boats, evidence can be seen of this on a walk along the bay. The spectacular cliffs and dunes are a National Nature Reserve and home to a variety of wildlife - peregrine falcons and fulmars are often spotted, as well as divers and other sea birds. Deer inhabit the wooded area at the top, and rare butterflies and plants can be found throughout the reserve. The owner has thoughtfully provided binoculars for your enjoyment. Melvich, Scotland“Rhianchaitel” is Gaelic for Cattle Field. This part of Bettyhill where the the house is built was an old croft that obviously often had cattle roaming around. Built over a hundred years ago at the beginning of the twentieth century, Rhianchaitel House is a rather grand croft house. You can see the ruin of the older property in the grounds near to the house, and that single storey croft house would’ve been 17th or 18th century. Arriving in the rugged village of Bettyhill on the far north coast of Scotland, you’re greeted with a collection of cottages across the hilly coast, centred around a shop, a café and a hotel with bar and restaurant. Rhianchaitel is walking distance from the village centre, approximately halfway down the hill towards the beach. Walking down the hill you come across the track circling back towards the house where it stands proud with no neighbours. The accommodation is spacious for five people and the house welcomes up to two dogs. Now even though it isn’t an enclosed garden, it’s a great spot for dogs as the end of track where there’s the occasional slow moving vehicle is about 200 yards away from the house. Dogs can have a great time roaming around the house in the garden and grounds.
Entering through the back door, which you’ll mostly do, there’s a useful hallway for boots after days out exploring. There’s a single bedroom on the ground floor near to the back door. The kitchen/dining room wit adjoining utility area is next and is a fantastic space for the family to gather in to plan days out and reminisce of days well spent at or near Rhianchaitel House. There’s a magnificent floor to ceiling window in the kitchen that gives a spectacular view of the beach and surrounding hills. The kitchen/dining room has everything you’d want from the space plus a handy Flat-screen TV mounted on the wall. The living room is also on the ground floor and again has a large Flat-screen TV for everyone to gather round on comfy sofas. Up to the first floor there are two bedrooms, one with a kingsize double and another with a double bed. The double bedroom has an amazing view down to the sandy beach. Also on the first floor is a spectacular bathroom complete with shower cubicle and a free-standing bath. Rhianchaitel House is the holiday home you’ll want to return to during your stay up in the far north of Scotland after long days out exploring. It’s also likely to be a family favourite that you want to return to in future years. There’s so much to see and do on the far north coast, and the NC500 touring route, which passes through the village will be very helpful. There are more amazing sandy beaches beyond Farr Beach at Armadale, Strathy and Melvich. To the west you have Tongue and its unbelievably scenic backdrop of Ben Loyal and Ben Hope which you can explore en route to the arty outpost of Durness. There’s too much to mention here, but hiking, biking (road and mountain bike), surfing, golfing, fishing (fly fishing on some of Scotland’s best salmon rivers, as well as trout lochs and sea fishing, whisky and chocolate tasting, wildlife trips. Dunoon, ScotlandSituated within the Loch Lomond National Park, this spacious apartment overlooks Blairmore Pier and is a great base from which to explore The Cowal Peninsula. There is an enclosed garden to the rear of the property, which is adjacent to the village’s ruined 150 year old bakehouse, and is a magnet for wild birds. Swallows frequent the area in summer and can be seen swooping and diving across the rooftops.
This stunningly beautiful area has a wide range of activities on offer, with Dunoon close by, offering a good centre for shopping, leisure facilities and a small cinema. This coastal route takes you through some of the most stunning parts of Argyll’s Secret Coast; a magical undiscovered corner of Cowal. A number of public gardens are located in the area, such as Ardkinglas, Crarae and Benmore Botanic Gardens with its avenue of giant Redwood trees.
No visitor to Argyll can leave without seeing the wonderful sight of Puck’s Glen. Here you will be immersed in the sound of running water as you walk upwards to the top of the gorge. Waterfalls gush down as you navigate the path and bridges across the river. Mosses, ferns, and wild flora encompass the surrounding rocks. Gargantuan trees loom down at you from above, and crystal clear pools invite you to take time to be still and just look. It truly is awe inspiring. Puck’s Glen is a few miles by car from Blairmore and is approximately a mile from Benmore Botanic Gardens.
If you would like some more energetic activity with your family, then Quadmania may be for you. There are three golf courses available locally and many opportunities for a spot of fishing. At Colintraive there is a short ferry crossing over to the picturesque Isle of Bute and a visit to the fabulous Victorian Gothic Mount Stuart House is a must. Tighnabruaich has a RYA sailing school and a selection of small shops. Anstruther, ScotlandThis immaculate three bedroom semi-detached holiday home can be found in a quiet residential area just a couple of minutes’ walk for the beautiful harbour of St Monans.
Refurbished in 2021 and decorated to a high standard throughout, you will enjoy staying in this lovely house. The open plan living room and kitchen is spacious has seating for six to enjoy their meals and leads to the conservatory where you can enjoy the views of the beautifully landscaped garden and the fields behind. From the enclosed garden you can see the sea and if you head out through the back garden gate you can follow the path down to the harbour. There is a slight slope leading down to the path. As well as plenty of cleverly designed seating areas in the garden there is a summer house where you can go and relax with a book. Upstairs there is a modern shower room and three bedrooms. Two of the rooms have kingsize beds that can be converted into twins if needed, and a single room. This house is great for a family or a small group of golfers.
St Monans is one of the smallest of the many picturesque fishing villages in the East Neuk of Fife. Located approximately 10 miles south of the historic town of St Andrews, with its world famous golf courses and University, and a wonderful selection of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants, St Monans is the perfect base for exploring this beautiful area. Take a walk down to the harbour with its many charming 17th and 18th century pantiled houses that crowd the harbourside. St Monans lies directly on the Fife Coastal Path, so is very popular with walkers. The remains of Newark Castle, with its circular beehive dovecot are further along the coastal path to the west of the village. You can walk to the popular arts and crafts village of Pittenween where the annual art festival is held, within a twenty minute stroll.
