The Mull of Galloway, with its lighthouse and grass topped visitor centre, is Scotland’s most southerly point with amazing views of Ireland, England, the Isle of Man and Scotland! Wigtown Bay Local Nature Reserve is the largest local reserve in the UK. It has internationally recognised, significant numbers of pink-footed geese, greylag geese, many species of duck and wading birds, visiting in autumn and winter.

The Southern Upland Way passing close by is ideal for enjoying the many and varied shorter walks. The dramatic scenery is home to a rich company of flora and fauna, with many unusual species including pine martens, golden eagle, ospreys, red deer, red squirrels and the natterjack toad. The area has many renowned gardens to visit including the Botanic Gardens in Port Logan. Wigtown, Scotland’s official book town, is also home to a charming gallery and excellent cafés, and is located only a few miles from Bladnoch Distillery, where visitors can sample the local malt whisky. For fishermen, the area offers a wide variety of opportunities including sea fishing from Portpatrick and trout and salmon fishing are close by. Other country pursuits include shooting and riding. Golf courses within a 20 minute drive at Stranraer, Portpatrick and Lagganmore. Turnberry, with its world famous course is only 45 minutes away and offers a spa, off road driving, quad biking and restaurant. For the more active, there are numerous cycle routes set out in stunning forestry commission surroundings and cycle hire is available at these centres. Sailing is available via the local marina, and slightly further afield there is the Galloway Sailing Centre where visitors can try windsurfing, canoeing and power boating. Burnfoot of Cluden is situated in a lovely spot overlooking the River Cairn at East Cluden. Rural in character, but less than ten minutes’ drive from Dumfries, it sleeps up to 16, and is perfect for holidays for families and friends. Burnfoot is open all year round for holidays and short breaks. There are eight bedrooms and three bathrooms, an Aga in the kitchen, a wood burning stove in the living room and central heating throughout. There is wifi, two televisions with Freeview and a good selection of DVDs and books. There are lovely river views from the house and lots of outside space for children to run around in or for adults to relax in. Up to two pets are welcome. Dumfries and Galloway is a great location for walking and cycling, with a huge variety of country and coastal routes to explore. The river path along Cluden Water (as the Cairn is known on this stretch) can be accessed directly from the garden at Burnfoot. The Twelve Apostles stone circle is also within walking distance.
