Along the coast is the lovely little village of Port William, known as the “Machars of Galloway” and of course you must go and find “The Man” and get a photograph with him. As well as Port William, you can also explore quaint villages such as Sandhead, Portpatrick and the Isle of Whithorn. A must is a visit to Wigtown, which is famous for being Scotland’s National Book Town, a book lovers haven. Stranraer, situated at the head of Loch Ryan, is the gateway to the Rhinns of Galloway and for more than a century was a busy ferry port for services between south west Scotland and Northern Ireland. The town’s main attraction is the Castle of St John, a ruined four-storey tower house built around 1500, which sits on a green in the main street. Close by are Castle Kennedy Gardens, with the castle, two lochs, a giant lily pond and an avenue of monkey puzzle trees. Logan Botanic Garden sits 13 miles south of the town and is home to exotic ferns and palms and a boasts a beautiful walled garden. This large, semi-detached bungalow is adjacent to the owners’ home and situated at the end of a quiet country lane on the owner’s land. It is surrounded by rolling countryside which leads to fantastic views to Corsewall Lighthouse and over the sea to Arran and the Mull of Kintyre. With three good sized bedrooms, one benefitting from a large shower en-suite. There is a fantastic living room with wood burner for those cold evenings and a large kitchen/dining room for those evenings when you want to entertain. The lawned garden is on the side of the property and has amazing views.
This coastline is just stunning with clifftop walks and some beautiful sandy beaches including Killantringan, Sandhead and Port Logan. The RSPB Mull of Galloway with thousands of nesting birds is nearby and is very popular with bird watchers, as is the information centre. The area is ideal for walking, cycling and fishing and there are also several excellent golf courses close by. There are many coastal villages to explore in the area, all steeped in history. Why not enjoy a day out at Drummore, a traditional fishing village with beautiful beaches and a quaint harbour? Portpatrick close by has a lovely harbour, some local arts and crafts outlets and amazing restaurants.
The town of Stranraer is nearby and offers main shops, restaurants and pubs. You can easily also enjoy a day trip to Ireland that can be taken from Cairnryan, just on the other side of Loch Ryan.

The house makes an ideal holiday base for exploring the rich history and countryside of Galloway and for comfortable relaxation in sumptuous surroundings. It is situated just a stone’s throw from Carlingwark Loch and its Lochside Park where there are fine countryside walks and a play area for children. Yet Craigvar House is just a few minutes’ walk from Castle Douglas’s wide range of amenities, including an array of independent shops selling produce and quality gifts, a theatre, swimming pool, library, golf course, pubs, and plentiful opportunities for eating out.
Craigvar House offers spacious, well-equipped accommodation. Leading off the attractive hallway are the drawing-room and dining-room, and a small boot and coat room. At the rear of the ground floor is the kitchen, off which is situated the ground floor shower room. The rear entrance leads onto the pretty, fully fenced, dog-secure garden. The staircase leads to a half-landing off which is a cloakroom and a double bedroom furnished with a kingsize bed. The stairs then lead up to the first floor landing off which are two large double bedrooms overlooking gardens opposite. One bedroom has a kingsize bed, the other has two single beds. Each room has its own en-suite bathroom, the first with shower, the second with bath and shower. There is a small study at the end of the landing. On the second floor is a small sitting-room with comfortable sofa and chairs, providing a quiet space separate from the main reception rooms. Leading off it is a walk-in cupboard, really useful for storing those pesky suitcases.
From Craigvar House the Solway coast is within a short drive, giving access to safe sandy beaches, dramatic cliff-top walks, and wonderful coastal scenery. Fishing opportunities abound whether it be sea, coarse or game. There is a large choice of further outdoor activities in the area including bird watching, cycling, golf, hill walking, sailing, shooting, stalking, wildlife trails and woodland walks. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, there are many beautiful gardens to visit, including the National Trust’s Threave Gardens nearby. Castle Douglas is close to the Galloway Forest Park, home to the first Dark Sky Park in Europe, and central to five of the “7stanes” - mountain biking heaven. Beach 13 miles.

Curlew Cottage is situated in a lovely rural area with amazing views from the wood fuel hot tub towards the Moffat Hills. Renovated completely in 2021, Curlew Cottage offers the perfect holiday cottage for you to get away from it all and relax. Situated just a few miles from the market town of Lockerbie, which provides all local amenities including some lovely little shops and restaurants. Lockerbie has a train station if you fancy a day trip to Edinburgh or Glasgow. However, Dumfries and Galloway is so beautiful there is plenty to keep you entertained during your stay at Curlew Cottage. The area boasts rugged coastlines and secluded sandy beaches with many beautiful gardens to explore. Enjoy world-class mountain biking, walking routes, riding, fishing and birdwatching all within easy reach.

Holly Cottage is an attractive semi-detached cottage located on a quiet lane on the edge of Palnackie, a popular village with a shop, award winning café and pub/restaurant. Holly Cottage has been refurbished and is beautifully decorated throughout. The attractive living/dining room with has comfortable sofas and a cosy wood burner is the perfect place to relax after a day exploring. Palnackie sits on the Urr Estuary and was once a busy working harbour and probably most famous in recent years for the ’World Flounder Tramping’. Only 3 miles from Holly Cottage is the small town of Dalbeattie and the area surrounding is hugely popular with walkers and cyclists of all ages. The world famous 7Stanes mountain trails at Dalbeattie Forest offer some of the best mountain biking in the country and attracts riders from across the UK and beyond. With its dramatic clifftops, sandy beaches and forests, walking is a delight with many beautiful walks from the doorstep. A particularly lovely walk is the walk to Almorness Point and its lovely beach, well worth a visit.
This delightful corner of South West Scotland will tempt all ages to return time and again. Warmed by the gulf stream, there are many beautiful gardens to visit, including Threave Gardens National Trust. Enjoy a drive from Dalbeattie along the Solway Coast with its extensive sandy beaches, rocky coves, traditional fishing villages and harbour ports, such as Kippford and Rockcliffe. Castle Douglas is close by, where you will find larger supermarkets and some wonderful unique shops, and Kirkcudbright just a little further afield, also has a variety of delightful little shops as well as the harbour where you can see the fishing boats returning. The area is well recognised for its clear skies as one of the twelve best stargazing sites in the world and the first Dark Sky Park in the UK so return to Holly Cottage after a day exploring and sit in the garden on a clear night and enjoy the spectacle.
