Wildlife abounds and the RSPB nature reserve is just along the coast. A championship golf course, Southerness Golf Course, is just 500 yards away, with a further good selection of golf courses within Dumfries and Galloway. Other activities include fishing, riding and sailing. The small village of Southerness with its quaint lighthouse that stands on the Solway Firth is well worth a visit, and 3 miles away is the home of John Paul Jones (founder of the American Navy). The area of Dumfries and Galloway has a lot of border history and many historical attractions including castles and many connections to Robbie Burns. If cycling is more your thing than horseback, here at Stable Lodge you are close to the 7Stanes mountain biking trails at Kirroughtree and Dalbeattie Forests; Kirroughtree has some of the best technical single-track mountain bike trails in Scotland. A must is a wander around the pretty little town of Kirkcudbright only a short drive away. With its busy harbour, you can watch the fishing boats return with their catch or visit the famous Broughton House, once the home of E. A. Hornel, or experience the Arts and Crafts Trail.
A must for children and adults alike is a visit to the Dark Sky Planetarium a state-of-the-art interactive science and space-themed experience for everyone or you just may prefer the Dark Art Gin Distillery next door! Throughout the year the town hosts a diverse range of annual events from farmers’ markets, a country fair, a jazz festival, a festival of light, the riding of the marches and, of course, the spectacular tattoo, an event not to be missed. Beira’s Garden, Knockendoch is a truly magical cottage set in expansive and award-winning gardens, beautifully planted and shaped by one of Scotland’s leading landscapists, with a variety of indigenous shrubs, trees and ferns. The house itself, built on the site of a former bothy, is wonderfully sheltered from the prevailing east winds and nestles into the lower slopes of two of Dumfries and Galloway’s most beautiful mountains, Knockendoch and Criffel. Even when there’s wind on the hills, there’s peace in Beira’s Garden!
The house itself has been beautifully decorated to the highest standard, with historic wallpapers designed to complement the moods of the different parts of the garden in each of the bedrooms - while the large kitchen-dining room and the light-filled garden room have been painted in restful shades. From one end of the garden visitors can sit and enjoy breath-taking views across the valley; at the other end they can sit and picnic next to the mountain stream that flows through the garden on its way down to the picturesque village of New Abbey, where there is a village shop, a pub and a cafe. On the summit of the hill opposite towers one of the best loved monuments of the region, the Waterloo Monument. Looking back down to the village, visitors have a splendid view of Sweetheart Abbey, a famous ruin once painted by England’s most famous artist, J.M.W. Turner - and from a spot very close to where Beira’s Garden now stands.
Until 2018, the route to Knockendoch and Criffel was almost impassable, but thanks to a recent council initiative a perfect walkers’ track has been laid and this now paves the way to one of the most beautiful views in Scotland. The summit of Knockendoch, which once took the hardiest walker 2 hours and more to reach, can now be attained in around 50 minutes. From the top there are amazing views across the Solway Firth and - on a clear day - all the way across to the peaks of the Lake District. From there the walk on to Criffel is easy and very scenic.
There are beautiful fishing lochs within a short distance from the house and the best organic delicatessen in southern Scotland is less than 10 minutes away by car. There is also a choice of three supermarkets 15 minutes away in Dumfries. There are few better places from which to explore wonderful Dumfries and Galloway than Beira’s Garden, Knockendoch. Cuil Park Cottage is a stylish three bedroomed cottage boasting two beautiful living rooms, two modern bathrooms and a lovely kitchen/dining room, the perfect recipe for a tranquil family holiday. All the bedrooms have outstandingly comfortable beds along with quality linen assuring you of that perfect night’s sleep. Each room has workspace and desk either in it or just outside, if you must work while enjoying this super cosy cottage there is plenty of quiet space to be found somewhere! Outside there is a large floodlit deck and a dry-stone wall barbeque as well an enclosed lawn. You are more than welcome to use the larger meadow that the garden leads onto.
Cuil Park Cottage is the perfect location to explore this wonderful area. For those that like to explore either on foot or bike the property is located on the Threave Estate walks, taking you straight into stunning traffic free walks and paths around the Threave Estate or into Castle Douglas itself. Castle Douglas, Scotland’s food town, is a 5-minute drive away and is a delightful small market town with an array of independent shops selling produce and quality gifts. There are number of cafés, pubs, and restaurants to enjoy a meal in, as well as excellent butchers and food shops for you to sample the local produce.
This unspoilt area of south-west Scotland offers magnificent scenery and has attractions in abundance, from beautiful sandy beaches to dramatic cliff top walks along the majestic Solway Coast. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, there are many beautiful gardens to visit, including Threave Gardens, a National Trust property. Close to the Galloway Forest Park, home to the first Dark Sky Park in Europe, and central to two of the worlds famous 7Stanes mountain bike tracks with Dalbeattie and Kirroughtree, offering routes for all levels and abilities. Situated only yards from the shoreline, this spacious, detached cottage has fantastic views over the sea to the Mull of Galloway and the Isle of Man. West Barr Cottage has a private garden and direct access to the beach. Known as the Machars of Galloway the area boasts a stunning coastline with amazing cliff top walks. These include Burrow Head, famed for being the location of the closing scene in the cult movie ‘The Wicker Man’, to the Isle of Whithorn, a walk well worth the effort. There are beaches galore to explore, everything from sandy to rugged rocky beaches. The Mull of Galloway is home to the RSPB Nature Reserve and is part of a much larger Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation for its seabirds, plants and coastal habitats. Here you can see many species of birdlife, the cliffs being home to guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes, while ravens and peregrine falcons are regularly seen around the cliffs. Out to sea there are dolphins, porpoise and minke whale to spot and tours can also be taken from the lighthouse. There are many historical areas of interest to visit and the Whithorn Visitor Centre is a mine of information. The area is a walkers and cyclists paradise with the Southern Upland Way passing close by and offering everything from gentle walks to challenging hikes. The town of Stranraer is 20 miles and offers shops, restaurants and pubs and the town of Newton Stewart is also 20 miles away in the opposite direction. There are many coastal villages to explore, and sea fishing, golf and horse riding are all available locally. Day trips to Ireland can be taken from Cairnryan. Beach 30 yards. Bengairn is a delightful lodge situated in a small select group of 10 similar properties, with open views over Colvend Golf Course, the local hills, and the Solway Firth, with the Lake District in the distance. It is beautifully presented, cosy, and inviting. The scenery is stunning, so why not take advantage of this from your very own balcony? You will probably be disturbed only by a glimpse of the odd badger, deer, or red squirrel! If you are feeling a little more energetic then stroll through the golf course to the beautiful Sandyhills Beach which is under 1 mile away. Your dogs are very welcome to this lovely lodge and we are certain they too will enjoy the walk to the beach!

Bengairn is easily accessible to everything this lovely corner of Dumfries and Galloway has to offer from the picturesque little villages of Sandyhills, Kippford, and Rockcliffe, where you can discover some of the 200 miles of stunning and dramatic coastline with secluded little bays and sandy beaches. Visit the many historical sites in the area such as Threave Castle, described as the most romantic place in Galloway, and to reach it, ring the bell at the jetty and the custodian ferries you by rowing boat over to the island! This area is also home to supreme mountain biking, challenging hill walks, and without a doubt some of the darkest skies in the world.

Visit the local towns of Dalbeattie, Castle Douglas, and Kirkcudbright with their variety of niche shops, art galleries, and excellent restaurants. Castle Douglas, the ‘Food Town’, has around fifty local businesses either selling or producing food. A visit to Kirkcudbright during their summer festivities is not to be missed with events such as the colourful Jazz Festival, the Riding of the Marches, and the spectacular Tattoo.

Situated in the Rhins of Galloway in the coastal village of Drummore, Scotland’s most southerly point, these holiday cottages stand on the shore of Luce Bay with its sand and shingle beaches just across the road. The well-equipped cottages offer stunning views across the expanse of Luce Bay with its white tipped waves and sea birds, beautiful in the summer, but equally spectacular for wave watching in winter. The area is unspoilt, the scenery idyllic, and the seascapes around the Rhins as dramatic as they are beautiful. Attractions include golf courses and the RSPB Scotland Mull of Galloway Nature Reserve where thousands of seabirds nest in the cliff face during the spring and summer. Harbour porpoises, dolphins, seals and otters can all be seen in the area. Logan Botanical Gardens are a must during spring and summer with its beautiful displays of rare and native plants, as are the gardens at Castle Kennedy and Ardwell House. 5 miles north of Stranraer is Cairnryan, home to the Stena Line and P&O ferries which make regular trips to Ireland.
