These two pretty, beamed, semi-detached holiday cottages, (refs 27442 and 27443) with mezzanine floor, have been attractively converted from former cow byres and are set in the owners’ 14-acre small holding which is home to farm animals including sheep and pigs. On-site is a small children’s play area. A 10-minute walk across the fields brings you into Sedlescombe with its village green and traditional country pub. In close proximity to Battle, with its famous battlefield and abbey, built to commemorate the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Relive one of the most famous days in history, and join the 1066 walk from the doorstep. Take a trip on the Kent and East Sussex Steam Railway from Tenterden, also known as ’The Jewel of the Weald’, through the Rother Levels to Bodiam, one of the most evocative moated castles (National Trust), built in 1385. Discover the one time coastal smuggling town of Hastings and medieval Cinque Port town of Rye with its cobbled streets. Picturesque sand dunes and interesting wildlife can be explored at Camber. On arrival, just off the main coastal road, find your private car parking spaces on the approach to Newhope. The private and enclosed courtyard makes for a fantastic sun trap or alternatively let your furry friends roam freely. The property boasts patio doors opening from the living area onto the patio, letting the light and fresh sea air fill the property.
Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is just 1 mile away and hosts a large range of wildlife in numerous different habitats. Shingle, saltmarsh, freshwater gravel pits and saline lagoons are only a few of the natural habitats that can be found when discovering the coastline. Alternatively you can delve into the rich military history which is attached to the area.
Newhope is also very close to Camber Castle, formerly known as Winchelsea Castle, which was built by Henry VIII to protect the Sussex Coast against French invaders in the 16th century. Follow in the footsteps of Elizabeth I and spend some time exploring the beautiful Cinque port market town of Rye. In 1573 she bestowed the title Rye Royale. Benson, and where they filmed the recent production of ’Mapp and Lucia’. Another great film location is Camber Sands and going in the other direction towards Hastings where ’Foyles War’ was filmed. Herstmonceux is not only home to the hands-on Observatory Science Centre housed amongst the domes and telescopes of the former Royal Greenwich Observatory but there is also the magnificent Herstmonceux Castle with its Elizabethan gardens to wander around. The town also produces Henner’s medal-winning sparkling wine, and because Sussex has a sunny climate and chalky subsoil (the same as that in Champagne in France), the county also produces wonderful sparkling wines. To access your nearest beach, take a short car journey to Pevensey where the Romans landed, and you can tackle the beautiful 31-mile 1066 Country Walk which starts at Pevensey via Herstmonceux, and on to Battle and then the Cinque Port town of Rye. Golf and fishing lakes are close by. For a spot of sightseeing, you can take the train to London from Polegate. Beach 8 miles. Shop, pub, and restaurant 1¼ miles.

The Horseshoe Annex is a Tardis of a property with lots of room in a very cosy space. As you walk into the property you are greeted by the kitchen/dining room which is well-equipped with everything you are going to need for this year’s staycation. There is a lovely living room and family bathroom. There is a kingsize bedroom and a twin room. The grounds are shared with the owners, but you do have your own piece of garden to the side of the annex. Situated in Steyning at the north end of the River Adur gap in the South Downs, 4 miles north of the coastal town of Shoreham-by-Sea. Located on the edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty this is a fantastic place to stay for the dog walker, rambler and for those of you that like a day out with the kids, there is a plethora of places to go.
Whether you are looking for relaxation, adventure, history or culture there are plenty of events, attractions and activities to keep you busy. If you are looking for a break from city life, you could take a ramble across the South Downs, or hire a bike, stopping for a rest in one of the tea rooms or inns. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind. The hiking highlight has to be Chanctonbury Ring which is a late Bronze or early Iron Age hill fort that boasts sublime views over the South Downs countryside. The ring, which is well-known for its prominent beech trees, is hailed as a place where the supernatural happens. Steyning itself is a pretty historical town with a wealth of 16th century buildings, local independent shops, places to eat and drink and the host to many different festivals. If you are a more of a biker then there are plenty of trails locally, to keep you busy. Caldbec House is part of a large country house, set in a quiet and peaceful location with far reaching views to the sea, but is within an easy walk to Battle town centre. The houses either side belong to the same owner and have long-term tenants.
The house is full of the owner’s antique furniture and paintings, and is in a great location for exploring the surrounding area, including Battle Abbey. The house is a mix of rustic and original features and furnishings from 1800, melded with modern additions and conveniences; it is both in town, fronting a side road, and overlooking the owner’s fields on both sides, and farmland to the Abbey to the south. Footpaths in all directions. From the moment you walk into the spacious cathedral-ceilinged hall with its antiques and amazing traditional stairway, you feel an immense amount of character. Walk through the enormous kitchen and you will find the tall ceilings continuing through, making this whole experience expansive. You will find everything needed for relaxing week in the countryside.
With ample parking for 6 cars right outside the property, there is no shortage of space both inside and out. Walk through to the huge lounge/dining room which is adorned with more of the owners painting and antiques with plenty of seating, and an open fireplace and views to die for overlooking the owner’s huge garden. Move upstairs and you will find four huge bedrooms, where the artwork, tall ceilings and the antiques just keep featuring throughout. Both bedrooms at the rear of the rear of the property come with a veranda, giving some of the best vistas you will experience; quintessentially what Sussex is all about. Caldbec House has been owned by the same family for many years, and this is very much apparent, as it is most definitely a home-from-home. Believed to be where King Harold camped the night before he was killed in the Battle of Hastings nearby on 14th October 1066. Step out of your front door and you have a pretty tea room at the end of the row of terraces, handy if you don’t fancy cooking breakfast or for sampling their cake offerings after a day out exploring. You are perfectly situated for the local deli, banks, greengrocers, restaurants, pubs and everything else you would expect from a bustling high street. A gentle stroll and you can visit the Heritage Centre, where you can watch the town model’s ’Sound and Light’ show which goes into detail about the history and the colourful past of Rye and its inhabitants. Just a 10-minute drive away is the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve where you can walk along the sea wall and out on to the marshes to enjoy flora and fauna. You can choose to walk out to Camber Castle, originally located on a shingle spit and where once it protected the towns of Rye and Winchelsea before the sea receded. Although no longer open to visitors it is still a striking landmark worth a visit.

The award-winning beach of Camber Sands is just a short drive away and has miles of sandy beach and dunes to explore. Visit the rock pools at low tide on the pebbly beach at Pett Level, just a 10-minute drive from Rye. The towns of Hastings and Ashford are around a 30-minute drive away and here you can get mainline trains to London if you wish to explore the capital for a day. The towns of Tenterden and Canterbury are all within easy reach by car and are well worth a visit. If you would like to take a day trip to the continent, the Eurostar can be picked up from Ashford International station and trains to Paris, Lille and Bruges are available. Alternatively, the ferries run from Dover just 45 minutes away or the Channel Tunnel from Folkestone, a 45-minute drive.

Polegate train station is less than 2 miles away and Eastbourne is less than 10 minutes away. In Eastbourne you will find lots of great restaurants, theatre, and modern shopping centre. There is a 19th-century Pier and a 1930s bandstand. Drusilla’s zoo park is a 25 minute drive away and a great day out for children of all ages. Beach 5 miles.
