Arrive in style, the lime tree boulevard entrance opens into the 100-acre private Worstead Park, boasting a 10-acre fresh water lake, woodland and meadows with wild flowers. A natural habitat rich with bird and wildlife, with roaming red deer and excellent bird watching opportunities. There are tremendous circular cycling routes via Dilham Canal and a wealth of opportunity for walking direct from the doorstep, so do remember to pack your walking boots. The woodland is rich with wildlife and bird life, so be sure to bring your binoculars. Red deer, otters, herons, a family of swans and kingfishers can all be viewed in their natural habitat.
Estate Cottage has been tastefully styled boasting character and offering modern day comforts. Formerly, home to the head gardener, for the 16th century owner of the estate, Sir Robert Berney, whose portrait hangs proudly above the original fireplace in the living room, complete with wood burner. The cart shed offers table tennis for guests’ enjoyment or simply relax in the private electric hot tub for six.
The park has links to public footpaths and bridal ways including Weavers Way, winding 61 miles through the North Norfolk countryside, with Dilham canal and the famous Norfolk Broads within walking distance. One of the best ways to enjoy the estate is on horse back, and the equestrian centre by the park entrance is where you can hire a horse for the day or house your own horse, with a variety of livery options available. The market town of North Walsham, 5½ miles, has a good selection of shops, supermarkets, bank, a weekly market, bowling alley, leisure centre with swimming pool, restaurants, and cafés. Worstead church is a superb 14th-century building, full of historic and architectural interest. Wroxham, the capital of the Norfolk Broads is 6½ miles for daily boat hire and river trips, waterside restaurants, cafés and shops. It also has a train station with links to Norwich city, 14 miles, for excellent shopping centres, theatre, market, castle museum, cathedral, cafés and restaurants, and coast and Bure Valley Steam Railway; a nostalgic 18-mile trip by steam on Norfolk’s longest narrow gauge railway which runs between the historic market towns of Aylsham and Wroxham, with wayside halts serving the picturesque Broadland villages of Brampton, Buxton and Coltishall, where you can hop off and on to explore by foot. The popular seaside town of Cromer, 15 miles, has a beach, promenade gardens, pier, shops, cafés and restaurants. There are sandy beaches at Happisburgh, Mundesley and Bacton within 20 minutes’ drive. Felbrigg and Blickling Halls (National Trust), and Sheringham Park are all within a 30-minute drive. A visit to Padstow, with its Michelin starred restaurants, cafés, local shops and traditional pubs, is an absolute must. It makes a great day out for all whilst meandering around the lanes that gravitate to the quaint working harbour where you can watch the day boats depart. Rick Stein has a large presence in the town with delis, a chip shop and cookery school. Padstow sits at the mouth of the Camel Estuary, a tidal river which is home to sea life and wading birds, and has its very own multi-use trail that hugs the shoreline as its drifts inland. There are many excellent bike hire shops right on the quay, and you can cycle inland to the pretty market town of Wadebridge. Or if you are feeling energetic, you can cycle all the way to Bodmin deep within the Cornish countryside, with the reward of fish and chips on the quayside and a pint of local ale from the nearby Brewery at Rock! Alternatively you can catch the ferry from Padstow across the mouth of the estuary to the little village of Rock and hire a stand-up paddle board or sailing dinghy, or walk the coastal path around Daymer Bay and on to Polzeath, which is a great spot for surfing.
Newquay, the county’s capital for surf culture, boasts many charming beaches which offer something for everyone. You can learn to surf at one of the many schools, or just laze away the day on one of the quieter more family friendly beaches such as Porth or the stunning Lusty Glaze, which has a great beachside pizzeria and rum bar with live music on most nights during the summer. This is a favourite with the locals and is a great place to watch the sun set.
Watergate Bay just minutes from the lodge, has a beach with a golden stretch of sand with cafés and pubs with views to die for. Truro, the county capital, as well as Fowey, Port Isaac and St Ives, are all easily reached for days out if you can bring yourself to leave this beautiful part of Cornwall. Nearby is also the historical National Trust Attingham Park, Wenlock Edge and Cardingmill Valley, as well as Stokesay and Ludlow castles. The Secret Hills Discovery Centre and Acton Scott Working Farm are great for children, and the glider centre on the Long Mynd and horse racing at Ludlow are also available nearby. These single-storey terraced properties and delightful Grade II listed thatched cottage are located in the scenic village of Wellow, less than 3 miles from the quaint harbour town of Yarmouth and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the western side of the Isle of Wight. Rossiter’s Cottage (ref PTTS) dates back in parts to the 1750s, and lies adjacent to the friendly owner’s home. It offers a spacious twin bedroom on the ground floor with a downstairs toilet on the same level for a comfortable stay for guests with restricted mobility. A warm welcome awaits you at this super property which has many personal, thoughtful touches throughout and which has a large lawned enclosed garden. A new development for 2018, each of the other four properties at Rossiter’s Vineyard Barn (refs UKC3208, UKC3209, UKC3210 and UKC3211) take their name from grape varieties once grown in the vineyard here.
