In the nearby village of Rosedale Abbey, 1½ miles away, you have a couple of pubs as well as a couple of cafés and a village shop. There is also a small pitch and putt golf course with a second larger golf course around a 15-minute drive away. Rosedale Abbey is very scenic and attracts many walkers. The famous ‘Old Ironstone Railway’ walk runs around the valley, and you can stop off at the lovely inn en route for some local ales and traditional food. The area is increasingly favoured by cyclists, who are also welcome to cycle the old railway line.
    The Yorkshire Cycle Hub is 12 miles away at Fryup, offering cycle hire, alongside an excellent café. Dalby Forest is well worth a visit and is also great for cycling, with cycle hire and other adventure activities including zip wiring through the treetops. During your stay be sure to visit Ampleforth Abbey with its serene Abbey Church and grounds to explore at your leisure. Ampleforth boasts a great shop and tea room open in the summer, as well as orchards and a cider mill. Nearby Hutton-le-Hole, a picturesque village, offers a fantastic day out and even has its home-made chocolate shop. Visit Ryedale Folk Museum sample the popular local ice cream and take a paddle in the stream. Fancy a stately home? Then look no further than Castle Howard, well worth a trip and a beautiful day out.
    The cottage is also within easy reach of Pickering with its many attractions including The North Yorkshire Moors Railway which goes all the way to Whitby, where you can enjoy possibly the most famous fish and chips in the UK. You are only a 30-minute drive from the heritage coast, with Whitby, Scarborough, Robin Hood Bay, and Staithes all within easy reach. This is a delightful destination all year round, whether your walks will be laced with blue bluebells in the spring, vivid purple heather in the summer, or glistening frost and deep virgin snow in the winter.
