This is a real find! Sitting right on the harbour front in the quaint fishing village of Johnshaven, this immaculate and newly renovated fisherman’s cottage has, as its name suggests, wonderful views over this picturesque harbour. The interior is warm and welcoming, with a calming and tasteful décor, comfortable beds and cosy wood burner in the living room.
Situated in the heart of the village, there is a wonderful restaurant next door serving local produce as well as a brilliant Lobster Shop, serving crab, lobster and all manner of lovely seafood. Johnshaven is a delight; lobster creels sit at the side of the harbour where you can sit and watch the comings and goings of the boats or take a stroll around the narrow streets.
Further up the coast, the popular market town of Stonehaven with its own outdoor heated pool, and Dunnottar Castle is well worth a visit while south Montrose, has clean sandy beaches, golf courses and other leisure activities. There is easy access to the Angus Glens from here, through rolling countryside of the Mearns or alternatively travel on the Victorian Heritage Trail, through Edzell and Fettercairn towards Banchory, over the scenic Cairn O’ Mount road. Boasting superb uninterrupted views over the Howe o’ the Mearns, the elevated position makes the most of the scenery and the enclosed garden is lovely to sit in and drink in the view. The owners have built an enclosed barbecue hut, allowing al fresco dining even on cooler days.
There is much on offer in the surrounding area, with gorgeous sandy beaches at St Cyrus and Montrose an easy drive away. Wildlife is here in abundance, with osprey, otters and many wading birds spotted at the mouth of the River Esk, leading to the sea. River fishing is available by arrangement on the North Esk, while, inland, there is excellent walking in the five Angus Glens, with routes for hillwalkers and ramblers alike. Greve Cottage is just 2½ miles from St Cyrus, 4 miles north of the bustling seaside town of Montrose and 30 miles south of Aberdeen. In a great location just opposite the Bridge of Feugh on the outskirts of Banchory, this lovely lodge is warm and welcoming and furnished with care to make your stay feel like a home from home.

The spectacular Falls of Feugh are just over the road, a stunning part of the River Dee where salmon can be seen leaping up the apparently unscalable rocks, amidst an often raging torrent, compelled by instinct to return to their spawning grounds further up the river. In the autumn the river is often in spate and sitting in the living room you can listen to the sound of the falls while reading a book or enjoying a drink. Marvellous!

Situated just a mile from the lively town of Banchory on the quiet south Deeside Road, Toll Bridge Lodge provides easy access to Royal Deeside and its surrounding areas., there is a plethora of good artisan shops, excellent eating places and many leisure activities ranging from tennis, golf and walking to great cycling and fishing. The Royal Deeside Railway is based at the Milton of Crathes Station and recreates the original line from Aberdeen to Ballater. Steam and diesel services start from Milton of Crathes and provide splendid views over the River Dee and the hills to the south. This is also Castle Country and the enchanting Crathes Castle, a 16th century fairy-tale like castle, is an easy drive. Further on, the ski resorts of the Lecht give way to the famous Whisky Trail around Glenlivet and Tomintoul, making for a great day trip in stunning scenery.

The Coyles (ref UK31466) is an impressive granite Victorian merchant’s house, with all the lovely high ceilings and details you would expect from a period property. On two levels, it offers a high standard of comfort throughout and is a great choice at any time of the year. Built in 1888 using local granite, pitch pine and slate, it’s a true Victorian gem. It has its own enclosed garden and grounds, and enjoys lovely rural views to the south to Craig Coilleach. Quiet and secluded, the gardens are largely laid to lawn with a variety of mature trees and several flower borders with a variety of shrubs. There is a handy shed for bike and kayak storage, and for outdoor entertainment there is a paved patio area, with outdoor seating and barbecue. The Coyles Cottage (ref SBH) has its own garden and grounds and is well equipped throughout with a lovely sunny conservatory, and benefits from triple glazing and central heating throughout, affording year-round comfort.
Ballater sits in the heart of majestic Royal Deeside and is also located in the Cairngorms National Park, making it one of Scotland’s most scenic visitor spots. Leisurely walks abound on the banks of the River Dee or within a few miles there’s great walking at Burn O Vat, Lochnagar and Loch Muick.
