There is also the Cleveland Way along the coastline and the steam train which winds its way over the heather laced hills of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, a delight to explore. There are also ancient forests nearby such as Falling Foss with its waterfall and Dalby Forest, with footpaths, bike trails and zip-lining through the tree tops. For equestrians your horse is welcome to join you so that you can enjoy some of the beautiful trails together. The Dreamer’s Hut is named after ’The Hawnby Dreamers’ - three local shepherds who in the mid-1700s, fell asleep whilst working in the fields on a hot day in the adjacent valley of Ladhill Ghyll, of which the hut overlooks. The shepherds awoke to discover they had each had the same vivid dream of spiritual awakening and being called to change their lives for the better. The three subsequently walked to Newcastle to hear the preaching of the famous John Wesley and converted to Methodism, bringing this faith back to Hawnby. Bolton Abbey is just a short drive away offering plenty of walking within the magnificent 30,000-acre grounds and picture-perfect picnic spots beside the river. The charming market town of Skipton also known as the ‘gateway to the dales’, is also 10 minutes away which is home to an ancient castle, cobbled high street and colourful street market. Perfectly located right in the heart of the popular village of Middleham in beautiful Wensleydale, Barbican Cottage is the perfect location for guests wanting to really explore the local area and be a part of this historic racehorse training village. Lovingly renovated, Barbican Cottage offers guests beautiful accommodation, contemporary fixtures and fittings, quality facilities and still maintains the charm and character of the building. On the ground floor guests will find an open plan living, dining and kitchen area. The area is spacious and light yet still remains comfortable and cosy with a beautiful tiled floor and exposed original beams. Perfect for horse lovers, Middleham is renowned for its long history and also serves as a thriving racehorse community. Guests will be able to watch as top class racehorses are ridden daily through the village and up to the gallops in the fields at the edge of the village. Ideal for a luxurious romantic break, there are many pubs, restaurants and cafes within easy walking distance and all are well known for serving good quality, local food and produce. Middleham Castle lies just behind Barbican Cottage and was once the home of Richard III and was referred to in former times as the “Windsor of the North”. Middleham is a great place for families too with plenty of attractions to visit and explore within a short driving distance. Local attractions include the popular Chocolate Factory, Tennants Auction House and tea pottery which are all located in Leyburn just two and a half miles away as well as The Forbidden Corner which is a hidden folly offering twists, turns and excitement around every corner, and is situated just four miles away from Barbican Cottage. Another popular attraction is the Wensleydale Railway which stops in Leyburn and travels through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Yorkshire Dales. Guests who enjoy walking, cycling or even just exploring will find an abundance of established public footpaths, cycle paths and bridleways that lead right from the village itself onwards towards and through the Dales and beyond. A visit to the Dales Countryside Museum is also a must. The scenery here is magnificent at any time of year and guests will find themselves on a journey through heather covered grouse moorland, open countryside, natural woodland and pretty, little Yorkshire villages. A little further afield, but still within easy driving distance, guests will be able to visit Castle Bolton, Jervaulx Abbey and Wensleydale Creamery as well as Aysgarth Falls, Hawes, Gayle Mill, York, Harrogate and Ripon.

Secluded yet surprisingly close to town, the seaside resort of Whitby is just a few miles away, easily accessible by car or on foot. The town is home to a jam-packed calendar of events which take place all year round, and you can take a tour bus to see the fascinating sites, which include the stunning Abbey and St Mary’s Church high above the cliffs. There are also regular boat cruises that offer a different aspect of the beautiful town from the water. A day trip to Robin Hood’s Bay is a must during your stay at The Hideaway. Just 3 miles away, the bay is full of character and charm, thanks to its cobbled, narrow streets and alleyways lined with an ecleclic mix of individually-run shops, pubs and tearooms, all set before a lovely beach that’s ideal for rock pooling and fossil hunting.

A little closer to home, Hawsker has a warm and cosy local pub that serves local food, and for the outdoorsy types, there’s a disused railway line only a few hundred yards away that stretches some 21 miles from Whitby to Scarborough.

The North York Moors National Park lies just inland from the North Yorkshire coastal resorts of Whitby and Scarborough, with over 1,400 miles of trails, footpaths and bridleways that cobweb the rolling heather-clad moorland and meet in the pretty rural villages and historic country towns. Carving a pathway deep through the North York Moors is the famous North York Moors Steam Railway, which carries its passengers from Pickering in the south northward to Grosmont, and then along the lovely Esk Valley to Whitby on the coast.
