These purpose-built holiday cottages (refs 24574, 27255 and 27257) have been constructed or converted from the original farmhouse buildings and an old Welsh longhouse. Welsh craftsmanship at its best - only the finest local tradesmen and materials have been used for the conversion of these buildings. They are situated in an elevated position on the edge of Broadlay near Ferryside on the old pilgrim road to St David’s Cathedral.

There is generous amenity space, dog walking paths and a country adventure play area for small, accompanied children. The complex is on the local bus route which connects to Carmarthen via the hotel and Ferryside railway station. In the opposite direction, Kidwelly and Swansea are en route. Ferryside is uncommercialised, peaceful and quiet; the ideal getaway for a perfect weekend (or longer) break. It is also, due to its proximity to Carmarthen, Llanelli and other centres, an ideal corporate meeting place. Kidwelly, with its Norman castle, industrial heritage museum, Pembrey Country Park and Motorsport Centre, within approximately 10 minutes’ travelling time.

The National Botanical Gardens, Laugharne (famous for Dylan Thomas’ Boathouse) and many Pembrokeshire attractions are about half an hour’s drive. There are many places to visit including Dylan Thomas’ cottage, where he spent the last years of his life. The Millennium Coastal Cycle Path, part of the national cycle path network, meanders through approximately 20 miles of local coastline, passing through local areas of interest. Places to visit include Kidwelly Castle, the Penclawydd Wildfowl Centre, and the Loughor Estuary with views of the Mumbles Peninsula south of Swansea. Shop, pub and restaurant ½ mile.

Pembrey must be the only place in Europe where visitors can sunbathe, swim and hunt for shipwrecks on the beaches, then experience the thrill of a toboggan run or race down the park’s dry ski slope. Enjoy a round of golf at the famous Jack Nicklaus course, Llanelli or the Ashburnam links course, or watch live sport at the Llanelli Scarlet’s Rugby Stadium and nearby Ffos Las Racecourse. A short drive inland brings guests to the county’s rolling countryside which is scattered with charming market towns including Llandeilo and Carmarthen, as well as numerous medieval sites dotted around. Ty Celyn Farmhouse really does offer a fantastic level of comfort throughout, with a spacious living room and wood burner for cosy nights in with a good movie. Pembrey Country Park is great for all ages and is fantastic for families and walkers alike, complete with 500-acres of woodland, a dry ski slope, toboggan run and the picture postcard Cefn Sidan sands, covering 8 miles of golden beach. The historic town of Kidwelly is a 10-minute drive away and is home to one of the finest preserved Norman Castles in Wales. The Llanelli Wetland Centre is a must see, where you can hand feed rare breed geese, go bug hunting, see flamingos and enjoy birdwatching from hides. From Llanelli you can also hire bicycles and take a spin along the Millennium Coastal cycle path, meandering along some epic coastline. Beach 7 miles. Shop 8 miles, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

Ty Lewis Cottage was once the family home and has been finished to an excellent standard with a spacious well-equipped kitchen with exposed stone walls and beams. The cottage is located approximately 10 minutes from both Ashburnham and Machynys Golf Club, which is a Jack Nicklaus designed course and offers a spa and restaurant. Don’t miss the coastal resort of Tenby, a 50-minute drive away which offers the perfect day out. Folly Farm Zoo and Heatherton World of Adventure are both close by and great for all ages.

The Swansea Leisure Centre and Waterpark is a firm favourite with visitors of all ages with a lazy river, wave pool, the board rider for indoor surfing and the master blaster rollercoaster waterslide, as well as the maritime museum and marina. Cycling is very popular in the Afan Argoed Country Park and golf and horse riding can also be found locally. Nearby Pontardawe has a swimming pool, indoor bowls, leisure centre and arts centre with cinema. Beach 13 miles.

Esgair Barn is in the middle of the owner’s land, which you are welcome to explore and picnic in. There is a little-used footpath right outside the barn and spectacular views of the Brecon Beacons from the top field. There are trees to climb and a shallow stream (behind a gate). There’s a bonfire area in one field if you get the urge to toast marshmallows, the owners can supply suitable wood. Please note that the barn has been recently finished in 2023 and the landscaping is still being perfected!
Internally, there is a large porch with space for wet coats and muddy boots, a lockable bike store, and a bath to soak in on your return. The living room is a grand double-height room with sofas and a big table to seat you all in comfort. The windows look out over the fields and stream to one side, and a small gravelled private patio on the other. There’s a wood burner to keep you extra cosy, and some good old-fashioned board games and jigsaws in case it rains. There is a TV, but you’ll be too busy watching the birds and squirrels! The kitchen is well equipped with an island and range and there is also a wet room and a bedroom on the ground floor. The other three bedrooms are on the first floor - a kingsize with an en-suite, a twin bedroom with a skylight for watching the stars, and a comfortable double bedroom. There is also a retro-style family bathroom on the first floor.
The barn is ideal for family gatherings as well as groups of friends. There is plenty of room to eat together, sit, chat, play games and have fun. Esgair Barn is a wonderful place for kids. They can paddle in the (shallow) stream, climb trees, listen out for the resident tawny owls, and see the Milky Way. There is a pet alpaca whose bedroom is close to the barn. He is sociable and curious, but please note that he can be a bit nibbly and he’s not totally keen on men. Please treat him carefully and with respect and ask if you would like to be introduced. The owners do sometimes host sheep from a neighbouring farm, so guests are asked to close the gates after passing through them and to keep and dog on a lead outside the barn.
