Ironstone Cottage is in a peaceful village served by a little local shop, with the rolling heather clad moors just at the end of the road. These stone terraced cottages were built for the miners back in 1860. You can visit the nearby mining museum to find out more about the history, as this area was at the heart of the steel industry back in the 1800s. The name Ironstone Cottage was chosen to honour the history of the area, the owner’s father was employed to care for the pit ponies from the age of 11. Now the biggest draw to the area is tourism as guests explore the national park and the nearby beaches. Just a short drive away you have Saltburn, Staithes and Runswick Bay leading down to the incredibly popular coastal town of Whitby, all ideal for a day of discovery. The Old Smithy is a truly unique, traditional, stone built terraced cottage right in the heart of the picturesque coastal town of Anstruther. It has been completely renovated into a welcoming holiday home, yet maintains the traditional character of the building and has incorporated modern and contemporary living style. Guests will find a spacious open plan living area with cosy sofas where you can relax and unwind, and a contemporary kitchen area fitted with good quality appliances and everything you will need to prepare a family meal. There are two double bedrooms on the first floor which overlook the living space and have sliding oak doors for privacy. There is also a shower room with a walk-in shower.

The harbour and port of Anstruther has a long and interesting history linked to The Old Smithy, and part of the building was built before 1730 and over time has been a stable, smithy and harbour store. It is located on Wightmans Wynd, which was named after Charles Wightman, a wealthy merchant and smuggler in the 1700’s and also a Jacobite sympathiser. He provided sanctuary for survivors from Culloden in the cellars adjacent to The Old Smithy. The building fell into disrepair, but in 2009 and due to its unique location and as a listed building, an architect took on the challenge of redesigning the cottage and won the Green Apple Award for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage in 2013.
