Padstow, home to the foodie empire of Rick Stein, the celebrated TV chef, has narrow cobbled lanes that meander around this ancient fishing village and gravitate towards the working fishing harbour. Get a pasty or an ice cream and watch the boats come and go with the days catch. Padstow sits at the mouth of the Camel Estuary and you can hire bikes in the town and cycle along the flat multi-use trail that hugs the shoreline as it heads into the countryside towards the market town of Wadebridge, full of craft and gift shops and bakeries.
The coastline nearby is dotted with secluded sandy coves and fishing villages which make a stunning backdrop to the South West Coast Path, which is a must if you enjoy walking and great views. Newquay, renowned for surf culture across its 11 beaches, is also easily reached with its own zoo, tennis club, cinema, ample bars, restaurants, cafés and coffee shops. Port Isaac, Polzeath and Rock are all nearby and easily reached with many golf clubs in the region including The Point, St Enodoc and Merlin, enabling you to play at many clubs through the week. The south coast of Cornwall is also easily accessible and offers a completely different experience of Cornwall with tropical gardens and its own climate. This stunning lodge lies just minutes from the delightful towns of Padstow and Newquay, and the amazing coastline of North Cornwall. There is a private hot tub to enjoy, with extended decking areas, as well as sun loungers and outdoor easy chairs. Guests are able to take advantage of entrance to the bird of prey centre at a charge of £10, and The Retallack Resort, literally across the road, has a spa and excellent facilities to keep the children amused, including water skiing and a surf simulator. A visit to Padstow, with its Michelin starred restaurants, cafés, local shops and traditional pubs, is an absolute must. It makes a great day out for all whilst meandering around the lanes that gravitate to the quaint working harbour where you can watch the day boats depart. Rick Stein has a large presence in the town with delis, a chip shop and cookery school. Padstow sits at the mouth of the Camel Estuary, a tidal river which is home to sea life and wading birds, and has its very own multi-use trail that hugs the shoreline as its drifts inland. There are many excellent bike hire shops right on the quay, and you can cycle inland to the pretty market town of Wadebridge. Or if you are feeling energetic, you can cycle all the way to Bodmin deep within the Cornish countryside, with the reward of fish and chips on the quayside and a pint of local ale from the nearby Brewery at Rock! Alternatively you can catch the ferry from Padstow across the mouth of the estuary to the little village of Rock and hire a stand-up paddle board or sailing dinghy, or walk the coastal path around Daymer Bay and on to Polzeath, which is a great spot for surfing.
Newquay, the county’s capital for surf culture, boasts many charming beaches which offer something for everyone. You can learn to surf at one of the many schools, or just laze away the day on one of the quieter more family friendly beaches such as Porth or the stunning Lusty Glaze, which has a great beachside pizzeria and rum bar with live music on most nights during the summer. This is a favourite with the locals and is a great place to watch the sun set.
Watergate Bay just minutes from the lodge, has a beach with a golden stretch of sand with cafés and pubs with views to die for. Truro, the county capital, as well as Fowey, Port Isaac and St Ives, are all easily reached for days out if you can bring yourself to leave this beautiful part of Cornwall. This area of Cornwall is well known for its golf, and Eagle Owl Lodge is within reach of at least five great courses ranging from The Point at Polzeath, St Enedoc, Trevose and Lanhydrock. A great tip is to start your ride in Wadebridge and cycle to Padstow where you can enjoy fish and chips on the quay side and a pint in the local pubs before setting off back.
Newquay, Polzeath, Mawgan Porth, Watergate Bay plus other hidden coves along this coastline provide some of the best surfing spots in the UK. There are many registered surf schools with great hire shops and coaching, so why not try this exhilarating sport in one of the most iconic surf spots? Padstow harbour also has many day boats that provide fishing trips so you can catch your evening’s supper.

This converted 17th-century Fish Cellar is in a stunning location with beautiful beaches literally on the doorstep. Set within a private gated community of five properties, this is a mid-terrace, eco-friendly home with much of the original stone retained to keep the charm and heritage alive. The property is set over three levels and in addition to uninterrupted sunsets and the sound of crashing waves, boasts a host of entertainment including board games, books, music and audiobooks through Amazon Echo, hundreds of DVDs, TVs in most rooms, a PlayStation 3 with games and a Nintendo Wii. For your relaxation you also have available a steam shower, aromatherapy and mood lighting. There is also a private hot tub situated on a decked area of the balcony.
The Fish Cellars is the perfect base for you to explore this historic and exciting area, known as the hidden gem of Cornwall. Portwrinkle is a small village on the south east coast of Cornwall, with views along Whitsand Bay, which can be seen for miles on a sunny day from the private balcony. Portwrinkle has two sand and shingle beaches, one of which is Finnygook beach and is popular with experienced surfers, however there are plenty of rock pools for the children to explore (nets available in the house), or you can just sit back and relax and take in the dramatic coastline around you.
The South West Coast Path is only 100 yards away and is perfect for enjoying a leisurely walk, whilst taking in the spectacular views of the coastline. It is characterised by high cliffs, dramatic scenery and long stretches of sandy beaches just waiting to be discovered.
A short drive away, or if you’re feeling adventurous, an 8-mile coastal path walk, is the traditional fishing village of Looe. The long harbour wall stretches up to the Victorian bridge. You can take a trip to Looe Island and explore the rock pools or go crabbing, you may even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the grey seal colony. There’s plenty of opportunities for sailing and fishing trips, too. You can also relax on the sandy beach in Looe, paddle in the sea or roam around the shops, museums and galleries. The local fish market sells fish straight off the boats from the harbour, something for a special dinner perhaps.
Down the road from Looe is the historic fishing village of Polperro with its winding streets, once a thriving centre for smugglers. The pretty village cottages are perched on steep slopes overlooking the harbour. There are many displays of local art and crafts, and you can sample local produce in one of the many cafés and restaurants Polperro has to offer. The inner harbour is full of colourful boats and is still a working harbour to this day.
Slightly further afield are the famous Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, both around a 50-60-minute drive away. The Eden Project hosts concerts and themed events throughout the year and has plenty to keep children and adults fascinated. The Lost Gardens of Heligan, set in 200 acres of garden history, were once lost under brambles and have been restored to their former glory. You can explore the gardens and the estate in your own time and appreciate why Heligan is one of the finest gardens in England. Historic homes closer to hand are Mount Edgcumbe House and Anthony House.
There is so much to see and do here, beautiful beaches, fishing villages, coastal walks, cycling, fishing, golf, horse riding and a plethora of National Trust properties are all available locally. Beach 170 yards. Shop, pub and restaurant.

The nearest beach is Sennen, approximately 20-minutes walk away (I mile), a large sandy beach surrounded by sand dunes, boasting two surf schools. There are two cafes and a pub in Sennen Cove (cafes open summer season only). No Place is well situated for amazing walking and hiking - it’s just a few minutes from the Cornish coastal path. Whilst you are here it is also worth travelling 15 minutes to Porthcurno, a superb beach and a fantastic area to explore. It is home to the Minack Theatre, an open-air theatre constructed on a granite outcrop jutting into the sea.

The town of St Austell is just an 8-minute drive away where you will find local shops, cinema and a choice of restaurants and pubs. The cathedral city of Truro is just a 20-minute drive away, offering a wider selection of amenities. Mevagissey is an ancient fishing village that offers local galleries, craft shops and fresh seafood restaurants. There are many beautiful gardens including the Lost Gardens of Heligan, the world-famous Eden Project and Caerhays Castle and Garden, all nearby. The historic port of Charlestown, one of the settings of TV’s drama ’Poldark’, is nearby as is the Roseland Peninsula. Porthpean and Pentewan Sands are the closest beaches, however there are beaches galore along the south coast. Also available at the village of Pentewan is an off-road cycle and walking trail that leads to the town centre of St Austell. Horse riding, canoeing, boat trips and walking are all catered for locally. There really is no shortage of things to do in this impressive part of Cornwall. Beach 5½ miles. Completed in late 2022, Rosefern is a stunning detached house of contemporary design with underfloor heating throughout. Tintagel is inextricably linked to the legend of King Arthur and is steeped in history. A visit to the English Heritage site of Tintagel Castle, where legend and historical fact alike meet stunning scenery, is a definite must while in the area and for Arthurian enthusiasts it is unmissable! There are many beaches in the area for surfers and sunseekers alike including Trebarwith Strand, Bossiney and the Castle Beach all in walking distance along beautiful coastal paths. Much of the North Cornish coastline is owned by the National Trust and is a haven for wildlife, providing fabulous walking opportunities with many well-trodden routes.
There are many pretty coves and inlets to discover along this coastline including Crackington Haven and Boscastle. A bit further to the south is the fishing port of Padstow and quaint Port Isaac of Doc Martin fame and 20 miles to the north is the fabulous coastal town of Bude. If you fancy crossing over the ‘border’ into Devon and enjoy open spaces then Dartmoor National Park is 33 miles or so to the east – here you can enjoy a day of walking and discover the vast moorland and roam the craggy landscape, defined by forests, rivers, wetlands and rock formations or tors. Or search the Neolithic tombs, Bronze Age stone circles and abandoned medieval farmhouses in this amazing landscape!
