Situated at Staithes, near Whitby, these former World War I army bunkers are in an idyllic position close to the countryside and sea. Four of the barracks have been ingeniously and tastefully transformed to provide good quality accommodation retaining much rustic character and charm. The remaining four lodges retain their near original condition as a visual reminder of their former function. Each refurbished lodge has the added advantage of free parking, an outdoor sitting area and bike parking racks.
Situated just off the Cleveland Way, there are many fine moorland and cliff top walks. There is a golf course and driving range in Brotton, 6¾ miles away, and at Scaling Reservoir, 7¼ miles, there is sailing and fishing. There is a leisure centre 2 miles down the road and a 2-minute stroll down the cobbled street brings you to the centre of the picturesque fishing village with its small harbour nestling beneath rugged cliffs. Step back in time and walk the quaint narrow passages, as Captain James Cook himself must have done. Here in Staithes there are village shops, pubs, cafés and a restaurant, and in 2020 the village was featured on the BBC programme ’Gone Christmas Fishing’ with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer. Why not travel on Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express (the North Yorkshire Moors Railway) through ’Heartbeat’ country, or visit Whitby and its famous abbey which is 11 miles away.

Built in the late 1700s, Hobland Barn had a number of uses, such as for cattle, grain and potato storage. It was renovated as a family home with light, space and the Norfolk countryside views at the heart of its design. Part of a cluster of similar conversions, Hobland Barn looks over sprawling fields, which can be viewed from the first floor balcony. Whilst it is the perfect rural location, the pretty seaside town of Gorleston-on-Sea is only 3 miles away, and if the traditional seaside experience is on your list of ‘to-dos’, Great Yarmouth is a little further, at 6 miles away, with attractions, rides and ice cream galore for all the family. Hobland Barn is ideally placed to explore the National Park further inland. You can take out a day boat, hire bikes or simply walk many miles along unspoilt water’s edge, taking in the nature, wildlife and simply just enjoying this unique landscape. History abounds in Norfolk and a trip to the fine city of Norwich must be on your list of things to see and do. With its castle at the heart, and an array of cobbled lanes to explore, it would take you all day and more to really experience all this city has to offer.

Inside Hobland Barn you can expect plenty of room for the 12 people it sleeps, with two separate living areas and a spacious kitchen with a gas cooker range, breakfast bar and large French doors that open out to the patio area, swimming pool and enclosed garden. With underfloor heating, luxury bathrooms and chandeliers, this really is a ‘wow’ location to spend your break away. There are four bedrooms on the ground floor making this property ideal for larger extended families and groups. Surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows in the living areas, even a day spent inside is an enjoyable way to pass the hours. On the first floor is a large family living room, large comfy sofas and French doors opening out to the balcony overlooking the garden and neighbouring fields. In a magnificent setting by the sea, Ardmaddy Castle sits in its own bay with unrivalled views over Seil Sound and the world famous local Slate Islands, designated one of Scotland’s National Scenic Areas. Graded ‘4 Star’ by the Scottish Tourist Board, these four cottages (SBZ, SRW and SRY) and Caddleton Farmhouse( UNP) are set in secluded, peaceful locations around the estate and offer an ideal base for exploring this stunning part of the West Coast of Scotland.
Caddleton Farmhouse (UNP) has a large carport providing dry, level access to a large games room/cloakroom which leads through to a spacious living room and well-equipped farmhouse-style kitchen with low level hob and worktops, dining and sitting areas with open fire and leading to a large conservatory overlooking the garden and sea.
The castle’s spectacular gardens are open all year round through Scotland’s Gardens Scheme and are a delight for gardening enthusiasts. The area is renowned for its abundant wildlife with porpoise, dolphins, basking sharks, otters, deer, eagles and wealth of seabirds often seen. Sailing, rowing and motor boats are all available for guests to hire, and there is free fishing on Ardmaddy’s stocked hill loch. There is also a central games room with table tennis and a pool table, whilst Caddleton Farmhouse (UNP) and The Stables (SBZ) have their own games room. Guests can also use the castle’s tennis court.
The bustling harbour town of Oban known as the ‘Gateway to the Islands’ is only 12 miles away and has wonderful seafood restaurants, shops and bars. From Oban there are boat trips to the Inner Hebridean Isles, including Mull, Iona, Staffa, Colonsay and Tiree. For the outdoor enthusiast, local activities include horse riding, coasteering, canyoning, canoeing, sailing, diving and golf. Fort William and Glencoe are a short drive away offering very popular climbing and skiing. Explore beautiful gardens and ruined castles in an area rich in historical legacy or take a leisurely walk or cycle along one of the many forest tracks. Visit Bonawe Iron Works, Cruachan Hollow Mountain, the Sealife Centre and Inveraray Jail. Or relax and enjoy the unspoilt natural beauty surrounding the cottages at Ardmaddy. Bod Eithin is spacious and furnished to a high standard. It is ideally located for families, as it is a short walk from the award winning 4 mile long, sandy Harlech beach. It is regularly awarded as one of the finest beaches in Wales and is backed by protected sand dunes. Being a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Morfa Harlech is now a National Nation Reserve, one of only 70 in the UK. It boasts numerous important sanctuaries for wildlife. In spring and summer keep an eye out for the three-coloured dune pansy, the pyramidal orchid or even the scarce bee orchid. When in ?ower, the dry dune grasslands are home to a number of butter?ies and moths, such as the six-spot burnet moth and the common blue and small copper butter?ies.
Other insects such as some of our rarest mining bees who depend on bare sand and you may spot a sand lizard, too. Ringed plover nest on the beach in spring and other birds such as the skylark and stonechat breed in the dunes, with redshank and lapwing using the saltmarsh. In winter wading birds such as oystercatcher, dunlin and sanderling feed along the shoreline, and wildfowl make use of the estuaries and saltmarsh.
Situated within the Snowdonia National Park, Bod Eithin is perfectly placed for reaching the tourist attractions of Zip World, Llanfair Slate Caverns, Shell Island, Portmeirion, Porthmadog, Barmouth, Beddgelert, the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways and Coed-y-Brenin Forest. The town of Harlech is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, courtesy of Harlech Castle built in 1282 and a world record holder for the steepest street in the world at 37.54%, Fford pen Llech. The world renowned Royal St David’s Golf Course is opposite (a top 50 course in Great Britain & Ireland). Walkers, mountain bikers, climbers, bird watchers and fishermen will find plenty to test their skills in the area, and for those wanting to travel slightly further, Snowdon, the Lleyn Peninsula and Betws-y-Coed are all an easy scenic drive away. For those with a head for heights fast jets can be seen training and photographed as part of the Mach Loop and flights can be arranged from the nearby Snowdonia Flight School to take you over the summit of Snowdon. The town has a swimming pool and climbing wall with instructors available for helping young and old alike. There are excellent boutique restaurants and cafes in the town, (booking is essential in high season).

Stepping inside the property from the drive way you enter into the hall, which leads you through into the heart of the home; the exquisite open plan kitchen/dining area. Catering to your culinary needs is a well-equipped kitchen, with sweeping worktops and farmhouse wood units, as well as all the essentials that you will require to whip up a delicious evening meal for you and your loved ones. The attention to detail is second to none, and you have everything you could wish for an indulgent, memorable stay. Soak up the atmosphere as your loved ones gather around the dining table; this is an exceptionally beautiful setting for your evening meals. Flowing from the kitchen area to the garden this leads to a porcelain tiled patio with bench seating for 12. Adjacent the kitchen is the living room, with sofas you could all too easily fall asleep on, as they are so cosy and inviting, especially after a day of exploration and high-spirited adventure. As the evening draws to a close, look forward to retiring to one of the well-presented bedrooms. The Cottage has commanding, stunning views across the English Channel. This attractive, spacious, family home for all seasons is the ideal property for a relaxing holiday with both friends or relatives.

There is a private hot tub at The Cottage, and the property offers 2 games rooms, 1 in the house with children’s toys, a library, games and 2 table football tables. There is a large, second games room in the garage next to the house which offers a number of activities including: table tennis, pool table, darts, bows and arrows, basketball (outside the garage). These games rooms also feature a kitchenette with a fridge, and seating area with a large sofa, ideal for all ages. Please note this games room is not heated.
A decked terrace runs the length of the property, an ideal spot for soaking up the sun or relax after a brisk winter walk in front of a glowing log burner in the cosy living room, overlooking the frothing waves. Four of the six bedrooms have sea views and the other two have attractive garden views.
The white chalk cliff above St Margaret’s Bay is said to be the first place the sun reaches each morning on mainland Britain! The beach is famous for being the closest point to France and is the spot where Channel swimmers begin their marathon 21 mile swim.
The village itself offers good pubs, restaurants and local shop within walking distance. The coastal path leads to the famous White Cliffs of Dover, gateway to England and now one of the UK’s protected Heritage coasts offering some of the best cliff coastal walking in the country. The lighthouse is the place where Marconi transmitted his first radio broadcast to France. Closer to France than London, bring a passport, catch a ferry from Dover and visit the French markets in Calais and Boulogne for the day.
