The area itself has lots to offer, including fantastic walks along the Ceredigion coastline, famous for its horseshoe coves, Iron Age settlements and sandy beaches, where bottlenose dolphins and seals can be spotted on a clear day! The picturesque harbour towns of Newquay and Aberaeron offer unblemished beaches, restaurants, boutique shopping and art galleries that are waiting to be explored. Away from the coast, Ceredigion’s countryside is just as promising, with an array of charming market towns and historic castles dotted around the county. For an adventurous day out, take a short drive to the rugged Cambrian Mountains and explore the Cors Caron Nature Reserve, which flourishes with wildlife and the historic ruins of Strata Florida Abbey, which is one of Wales’ most important historical sites. These 3 beautiful and spacious barn conversions are set on a working sheep and beef farm, and each property has its own private hot tub. The farm itself has 140 acres, and the farmland links up to the Ystwyth Cycle Trail which is over 16 miles long. The interiors of the properties have vaulted ceilings, modern lighting, and furnished with leather sofas and wood-burning stoves, each with a hot tub available. All 3 properties (refs OA5, OA6 and OA7) can be booked together to form one large house sleeping 12, and they all have interconnecting doors which can be opened up. There is also the option of taking a horse on holiday, the farm has 6 loose boxes and a paddock which can be made available. Located near Tregaron, a small Welsh-speaking market town where guests can visit the famous Rhiannon Welsh Gold Centre that offers beautiful gifts and a fantastic art gallery. Tregaron is also famous for its trotting races, which are actually held here at Dolyrychain Farm (please check with owners for dates). The event is the largest of its kind and attracts over 10,000 visitors. This is a haven for walkers and cyclists with the Cambrian Mountains at the foot of the farm and the panoramic Pumlumon Mountains to the north. Visit the university town of Aberystwyth, home of the National Library of Wales, take a walk on the promenade or even catch the electric cliff railway on Construction Hill. For a magical day out take the narrow gauge railway from Aberystwyth to the heart of the Pumlumon Mountains where the destination will be the world famous Devils Bridge and Rheidol Falls. Situated just 5 minutes from Aberporth, Cardigan Bay and within easy reach to the whole of the beautiful Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire coastline and coastal walks, The Cottage is a detached, converted stone holiday cottage peacefully set on a farm with a selection of alpacas, donkeys, goats, ducks and chickens. The owners who live on the farm, which is set in 48 acres of rolling countryside, encourage the children to interact with the animals and are also pleased to offer the use of a barbecue hut nicknamed the ‘Hobbit House’ by the family. Guests can hire it during their stay directly with the owners, subject to availability and for a small charge. There is bike storage in the barn if you would like to bring your bikes.
Within a 15-minute drive, visitors can discover quaint New Quay, famous for the bottlenose dolphins that can often be seen from the harbour (boat trips available in season). The colourful, Georgian, harbour town of Aberaeron is just a bit further up the coast road, with its chic shops and plenty of restaurants. Antique shoppers and browsers will enjoy the nearby market town of Newcastle Emlyn, and Cenarth with its waterfalls is also close by and offers indoor swimming, coracle rides, fishing and paintballing. There are numerous attractions in the area, particularly suitable for children.
Nearby is the Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park, which is set on a headland overlooking the nature reserve of Cardigan Island, home to thousands of sea birds. At the foot of the cliffs, a colony of Atlantic grey seals can be observed in their natural habitat. Spectacular coastline and wonderful views can be savoured from the National Trust-managed Penbryn Bay and a visit to National Trust Cilgerran Castle can also be enjoyed. Only the ruins remain of this striking 13th-century castle, whose vantage point overlooks the wonderful Teifi Gorge.
Also nearby is the town of Cardigan with its restored medieval castle. The Teifi Valley Railway is another experience for the visitor, a 2-mile journey offers wonderful views of the valley and countryside. Golf and horse riding can also be found locally. Beach 3½ miles. This wonderful example of a detached, single-storey, converted barn, adjacent to the owner’s home, dates back to circa 1810, and sits within the Hafod Forestry Commission Estate, which is a picturesque landscape occupying about 500 acres of the Ystwyth Valley and surrounding hills, some 15 miles inland from the Ceredigion coastline. Lovingly converted by the craftsman owner, Pendre Isa is an extremely spacious and beautifully furnished property for two people, boasting its own private decked terrace from where you can relax and enjoy the views and watch the red kites and buzzards circling overhead. From the doorstep of the barn, the estate can be explored on foot (maps are available for the five way-marked walks of varying length and difficulty) where there are streams, waterfalls and rustic bridges to discover. Nearby attractions include Devils Bridge, first built by monks in the 11th century and from where you can take the Vale of Rheidol steam train that meanders through the valley to the seaside town of Aberystwyth, the Silver Mountain Experience, an 18th-century silver-rich lead mine, and the Magic of Life Butterfly House. Visit the nearby National Trust site of Llanerchaeron an 18th-century estate and John Nash designed mansion house with cafe, woodland walks. Take an underground tour of the Dolaucothi Gold Mines, and John Nash designed mansion house train taking you to Devil’s Bridge and waterfalls. There are 60 miles of coastal path and plenty of lovely beaches and coves to explore. Alternatively, take the steam train to Devil’s Bridge and Waterfalls. Whatever you do or wherever you go, Ceredigion offers a warm welcome and a host of attractions and history. Befitting of a county that dates back over 1600, every town has a tale to tell and each village has a mystery to discover. Beach 10 miles.

Y Bwthyn (The Cottage) is a lovely traditional Welsh stone cottage situated within the village of Talgarreg, just 15 15-minute drive from the stunning Cardigan Bay coastline. On the outside of this semi-detached cottage, a plaque commemorates the fact that renowned Welsh preacher and poet Dewi Emrys once lived here. Dewi Emrys won the very coveted National Eisteddfod ’Chair’ no less than four times for his work. The property is a Visit Wales 4* graded property (graded March 2024).
The current owners of the cottage have worked tirelessly to create a delightful holiday home, which has been thoughtfully finished to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for everyone who stays here. The interior is extremely cosy, with original features such as exposed stonework and beams, and you will be warm and cosy as you relax by the multi-fuel burner. The modern and bright kitchen/dining room is very well-equipped and includes a dishwasher and a coffee pod machine. Upstairs there are two characterful bedrooms, a double en-suite, and a twin room for children with a DVD player, bed guard and night light, each with a TV. The lovely enclosed garden looks out onto fields beyond and the raised patio is the ideal spot to enjoy the views with a morning coffee or evening glass of wine. Although, with the welcoming village pub right opposite you will probably want to spend some time there too!
If you can drag yourself away from Y Bwthyn, you must explore the surrounding area. The pretty seaside town of New Quay, with its houses clinging to the rocks, is charming. There is a selection of little shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants, and also the Marine Wildlife Centre. You can take a boat trip to spot dolphins and seals, and from the sea, you can get a sense of how beautiful this coastline is. If sailing isn’t for you, why not visit Aberaeron and enjoy fish and chips or the famous honey ice cream, overlooking the harbour watching the boats bobbing about, or people crabbing when the tide is in? There are plenty of lovely sandy beaches to explore in the area, including. New Quay, Tresaith, Penbryn, Llangrannog and Aberporth. Nearby, Llangrannog and Tresaith have pubs and restaurants overlooking the beach, so whatever the weather you can enjoy a meal and soak up the views, or just have a pizza on the beach at Llangrannog.
The county town of Cardigan and the university town of Aberystwyth are worth a visit, both with castles and the latter with a pier, promenade and electric cliff railway, and the scenic Vale of Rheidol Steam Train. Take a visit to see the beautiful Cenarth Falls, with suitable paths for prams, buggies or disabled access, or just a short drive away is the National Trust-owned Llanerchaeron, as is the internationally known Llandysul Paddlers Canoe Centre. If you are after serious mountain biking, you can take to the muddy tracks at Nant-yr-Arian, Aberystwyth or the Brechfa Forest, or you can hire electric bikes locally and take a stroll on the scenic country lanes of the area. The picture postcard town of New Quay sits above the glistening Cardigan Bay, and there is a variety of eateries and pubs, along with individual seaside shops. Take a stroll along the harbour and try to spot the resident pods of bottle nosed dolphins that can be seen almost daily.
