The Peak District is home to Chatsworth House, a magnificent stately home with stunning gardens and beautiful art collections; it is a must visit for history and architecture enthusiast. There are many different walks to be enjoyed around the entirety of the Peak District. Through the fields alongside unused railway tracks and hilly trails, there’s plenty of countryside to see along the way whichever route you take. You can easily fill your time in Derbyshire with activities to suit all your party with the knowing of having Red Robin Cottage to return to at the end of the day to relax and unwind in comfort.

Nestling in the stunning scenery of Goyt Valley this wing of the owner’s farmhouse retains many of its original features and beams. This spacious holiday accommodation, situated on a working farm, is in an ideal place to explore this lovely area, and is also in a conservation area, with walks from the doorstep. It is 1 mile from Whaley Bridge where you can stroll along the tow path to the Buxworth Basin or take a narrow boat trip. Whaley Bridge also has a train station to help explore if you want to leave the car behind. You could spend a day in Manchester and take in a show for the evening. 6½ miles away is the famous spa town of Buxton which also boasts an opera house and Pavilion Gardens. Book a day in the Dome Spa to relax or travel a little further and visit Chatsworth House and its amazing gardens and estate. Medieval Haddon Hall and the old market town of Bakewell is a must and you can travel through Winnets Pass to the charming village of Castleton with its famous caves where the Blue John stone is mined. Take a tour by boat through these caves and learn about the history of the people and how they mined them. Matlock Bath and Alton Towers make great days out for families. There are plenty of activities to enjoy locally including inhouse clay pigeon shooting lessons (at cost, by arrangement with owner) and there is also golf and horse riding located within 5 miles of the property. Set on the owners’ farm with far-reaching countryside views, this detached barn conversion offers modern facilities along with original exposed stone and wood. This working farm with cattle, ducks, geese, chickens and horses is an ideal holiday location (stabling available). Walks from the doorstep and coarse fishing ½ mile away. Helicopter rides available locally (weather permitting). Close by are Chesterfield, Ashover, Matlock, Chatsworth House and Bakewell. Golf and horse riding within 5 miles. This imposing 19th-century building was originally the coach house and stables for the nearby ‘Owl Coaching Inn’ (reputedly a haunt of highwayman Dick Turpin), that’s now a farm, just 2 miles from the historic Derwent Valley mill town of Belper. The building has been most sympathetically converted and retains hand-cut lintels, vaulted coach-ways on the exterior, and superb barrel-vaulted ceilings, all emphasise the historical importance of this Grade II listed structure. The original arched coach entrances now have French windows that open onto flagstone terraced areas. Turpin’s Cottage, in the grounds of the farm with another property, overlooks a wooded dell, and adjoins a 2-acre paddock and a play field with ample parking. Belper’s formal river gardens, visitor centre, and historical mills, now a World Heritage site, are within 2 miles. Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Matlock and Matlock Bath, and the popular market town of Bakewell, are all a short drive away. Shops and pubs 2 miles.

With a unique layout, on the ground floor there is a family size kitchen with breakfast table and offering all the equipment and appliances you should need, a dining room with comfortable seating and work station area, and the ground floor inclusive of a double bedroom with a wood burner. Off from the dining room is a flight of stairs taking you to a sitting room with large TV and open coal fire. There is a separate set of stairs on the opposite side of the cottage which takes you to the two remaining double bedrooms and the shower room. Outside there is an open but private courtyard. Abacus House started life out as the local village school in Hackney, Derbyshire. It is believed to date back to 1910. This charming characterful Grade II listed cottage opens its front door onto the open veranda corridor, once having many small feet running along to get to class on time.
Abacus House boasts a very high specification, with a modern stylish kitchen and bathroom, but manages to retain its quirky stylish twists throughout. A large open plan living area leads through to a dining area, still housing the characterful open grate arts and crafts fireplace, and then to the kitchen, with its large feature windows throughout, letting the light flood through the whole of the ground floor. A staircase leads to an upper floor with its fun and interesting layout, including a bed and bathroom, along with a seating area complete with cushions to relax on and enjoy the view from the school windows.
Set within the beautiful area of Matlock, you are within easy reach of one of the most stunning parts of the Peak District. The closest attractions are Matlock and Matlock Bath, giving the opportunity to explore the Heights of Abraham and Gulliver’s Kingdom accessed via cable car, and offering spectacular views of the Derwent Valley. From here you can tour the network of caverns and passageways, or walk over 60 acres of woodland hillside. This is an ideal base from which to explore the region’s attractions including the magnificent stately homes. The beautiful Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are an absolute must see, or visit the picturesque villages of Bakewell and Ashover (Cardale in TV’s ‘Peak Practice’) which are both close by. Excellent walking can be found from the doorstep, plus activities at Carsington Water including sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and cycling, plus excellent birdwatching in the surrounding areas.
