With a wonderful beach just moments away, this spacious apartment, new for 2018, is located on the eastern side of the island, just outside of Shanklin town. Ideal for families, the property is able to accommodate up to six guests and it is also dog friendly, benefiting from an enclosed rear garden.
The excellent nearby beach offers a classic British seaside vibe and can be accessed from a set of steps from the top of the cliff path which is close to the property. Alternatively you can gain access from either of the flanking esplanades at Shanklin or Sandown. As this beach is effectively tucked away and not quite as straightforward to reach as its resort neighbours, it is very often quieter during the busier seasons, making it a peaceful alternative for a day on the beach, and the perfect spot for surfing, kayaking or paddle boarding, as the sea is relatively shallow and clear. Take advantage of the instructional school which is located at the back of the beach that offers a whole range of water sports activities for all ages and abilities. There are beach huts which you can look to hire and also a number of benches to sit on along the sea wall path, and there is also a café and barbecue area which is always popular during the summer season. When the tide is further in and the golden sands briefly disappear, the walk along the sea wall between Sandown and Shanklin is highly recommended as it offers a wide, flat path which is ideal for both walkers and cyclists.
Away from the beach, the town of Shanklin hosts a multitude of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants to enjoy. The old village is world famous with its pretty thatched pubs, rock shop, cosy tea rooms, restaurants and craft shops. The esplanade is packed full of amusements and crazy golf, as well as several waterfront eateries.
Neighbouring Sandown is a truly traditional beach resort with pier, amusements and pitch and putt. The Isle of Wight Zoo, and the Dinosaur Isle attraction can be found at the northern end of the esplanade towards Yaverland and Culver Down. The town is brimming with attractions to entertain visitors, most of them right on the beach front itself, so again you never have to stray too far from the sand. Further afield, there are numerous attractions to discover for all ages on this beautiful sunny island. To the west you’ll find The Needles Landmark Attraction with its chairlift, amusement park, boat rides, lighthouse and coloured sands of Alum Bay. Venture north towards Cowes and you can pay a visit to Queen Victoria’s favourite holiday residence, Osborne House and Gardens, or perhaps go south past Ventnor down to Blackgang Chine, the oldest themed attraction in the UK. The position of Captain’s Cottage couldn’t be better, it is right in the heart of this beautiful seaside resort, with shops, bars, and restaurants on your doorstep. It’s only a 10-minute stroll to the wonderful sandy beaches too. Shanklin is one of the most popular seaside resorts on the island, home to the Old Village and Shanklin Chine. The seafront is packed with amusements, activities, and crazy golf courses. Within a moment’s walk of Captain’s Cottage is the bus station, which has great links to anywhere on the island and there is also an open-top bus in the summer season, great for sight seeing. At the end of the road, there is also a train station, which stops at several coastal towns. Osborne House was once Queen Victoria’s favourite residence and is open to the public and well worth a visit, as are Carisbrook Castle, The Needles rock formations, Robin Hill park with acres of parkland, natural woodland, countryside gardens, adventures, and special events, Ventnor Botanical Gardens and Shanklin Chine, a deep wooded gorge with streams and waterfalls.
The model village at Godshill is also not to be missed as this gives a good overview of the island and its attractions, all in miniature of course. Start your holiday as soon as you hop onto one of the many ferry options, whether you whiz over on the Hovercraft or one of the car ferry links.

Winford is a neighbouring district to Apse Heath, which has a small supermarket store, and there is a bigger store a short drive away. You’ll enjoy beautiful woodland walks in the nearby Borthwood Copse, where you will find an array of different trees and plenty of wildlife. The main cycle path from Sandown to Newport is accessed a few minutes away in Alverstone Village and the shopping town of Newport is about 15-20 minutes’ drive away, making this spot an ideal base to explore the whole Island. This Grade II listed, thatched holiday cottage offers far reaching countryside views. One of a pair, it has many character features such as beams, low ceilings and picture windows and is a 15-minute walk from a sandy beach. Fresh crab and lobster can be purchased from the local shop, or the charming village of Bembridge, 1 mile, has a fine sandy beach, fishing and a super harbour. Enjoy golf, riding, wind surfing and kite surfing in the area. Visit Amazon World, Robin Hill Adventure Park, Sandown Zoo, Osborne House, Carisbrooke Castle and Ventnor Botanical Gardens. Located less than 10 minutes away from the picturesque coastline, this delightful, detached barn is great for couples - whether it be for a full week’s holiday or a short break. Badgers Sett Brook is also dog friendly, making it the perfect base to explore all that the south-western side of the Isle of Wight has to offer with your four-legged friend.
Brook Bay can be found moments away on the unspoiled south west coast of the island. The beach is made up of golden sands, and is great for many activities, from cricket on the beach, to kite and wind-surfing for the more adventurous. One of the beach’s more unique features is the fossilised forest of huge trees which appears from beneath the waves at Hanover Point at low tide, it’s definitely worthwhile booking a tour on the beach to see the dinosaur footprints in the sandstone ledge.
The island has become a real hot spot for cycling enthusiasts with a choice of challenging off road bridleways, peaceful byways and level purpose-made tracks running along its former railway lines. Cycle to the famous Needles landmark or take on the full round the island route, which is 66 miles long and is used for the annual Isle of Wight Randonnee. You can also travel along the route at a more leisurely pace and along the way you will find numerous restaurants, pubs and cafés amongst the quaint villages and towns serving tasty local produce. Heading towards Sandown, a very short walk will bring you to the path that will lead you down to the glorious beach that offers many cafes. If you want to hire a paddleboard, kayak, or windsurfer then WightWater is the place to visit.
Shanklin seafront makes for a great place to visit. The dinosaur themed crazy golf course is always a popular place to spend a couple of hours. For walkers and cyclists, the lodge is conveniently situated for the footpaths and cycle routes. For E-bikes, outside the lodge you will find outdoor charging sockets. Nearby Lake shops offer several take-away outlets including traditional fish and chips as well as an Indian restaurant. Various other small shops can be found. This beautifully appointed, two-bedroom holiday cottage, which is part of a former lifeboat station and Grade II listed, is located right on the waterfront looking out across to West Cowes and the Solent. It combines the heritage of the coastguard’s boat house (where the life boats were stored) with modern architectural design, offering a bright and airy space, with exposed beams and high vaulted ceilings.
The property is 20 yards from a public slipway, so if guests had a small boat, this could be stored at the property and launched via the slipway straight out into the Medina Estuary and then onto the Solent.
