East Witton boasts an award-winning gastro pub, and a 16th-century inn famous for its real ale, Yorkshire gammon and eggs.

The Yorkshire Dales makes for a most scenic walk or bike ride, with its rolling hills, tranquil woodland, open countryside and tumbling streams. Aysgarth Falls, Moor Cote, Cover Bridge, Ellingstring and Masham Bank are certainly worth seeing. History buffs are often drawn to the former Cistercian monastery of Jervaulx Abbey, which was founded in 1156 and is now open to visitors all year round with an on-site tea room and a wide range of events. Middleham should also be high on the agenda – this famous horse racing town was once home to Richard III and Middleham Castle is steeped in history. Spend a day at the horse racing links and watch world class racehorses gallop down the track.

Guests will find an abundance of top quality local pubs and restaurants offering fresh local produce in the area. Visitors of all ages will love The Forbidden Corner which is just a few miles away, a folly-turned family attraction that has surprises waiting around every corner. The popular market town of Leyburn is only 4 miles away, with its weekly farmers’ market, along with a variety of quaint shops, tea rooms and restaurants for an evening out. All within an hour’s drive are many popular destinations including Ripon, Catterick Racecourse, York, Thirsk, Barnard Castle, Richmond and Durham. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant 110 yards.

For those who love the open countryside, long walks and nature, The Barn is the perfect spot to stay. Set within the North York Moors National Park and on a working sheep farm, it has everything for the great outdoors fanatic. The owners, who live adjacent, have renovated the old hay barn and have thought of everything, even down to dogs having their own private doggy shower room, so you can wash them off after a long walk in the beautiful countryside.

This detached property has been designed to make the most of the wonderful views across the dale, with large panoramic windows which leave you mesmerised by the view. All the bedrooms have private en-suite bath or shower rooms, and are decorated and furnished to a very good standard. The living room has a cosy wood burner and French doors leading out to the enclosed garden and patio area, and there is also a galleried reading area overlooking the living room. The Barn is ideally placed to visit the east coast of Yorkshire, with Scarborough, Whitby and Filey all just a short drive away. Scarborough is the nearest resort, with its long Marine Drive that takes you from North Bay to South Bay, passing the castle perched on the clifftop. The two bays are very contrasting, but one thing they both have in common is that they both have an excellent sandy beach. Scarborough has lots to offer, from excellent restaurants, shopping, a waterpark with a large wave pool and outdoor infinity pool, and of course the cricket festival.

The North York Moors National Park is also home to the Dalby Forest, with over 8,000 acres of woodland to explore and plenty of cycle and walking trails for all abilities. The Dalby Forest mountain biking track has hosted the world cup, so you will find some challenging runs there. It is also the home of the Go Ape adventure park, which is great for the children.

Within the hour you can be in the medieval city of York, with its picturesque streets and historic buildings. The city is voted every year as being one of the top 10 cities to visit. There are street entertainers, independent shops and cafes to enjoy, as well as museums and theatres. This homely, semi-detached bungalow is perfect for that well-needed family holiday. The property is situated in a quiet cul-de-sac, in the village of Hunmanby, and just 3 miles from the traditional seaside resort of Filey. There is an enclosed lawned garden to the rear of the property, making it ideal for small children or pets. There’s also a small open garden to the front of the property.
There are a whole host of amenities within walking distance including a post office, shops and local pubs. The seaside resorts of Filey, Scarborough and Bridlington are all just a short drive away. Filey is the smallest of the three resorts, and is a very traditional seaside resort with a wonderful large sandy beach. Scarborough and Bridlington are much larger resorts with lots of amenities to keep the family entertained. Scarborough also has two wonderful bays with a long sweeping promenade which stretches for over 3 miles, perfect for a leisurely stroll along the seafront. To the north of the bays you will find the Sealife Centre and Alpamare Water Park, both exciting visits for children. Peasholm Park with its stunning gardens and large lake where you can hire pedalos and rowing boats is also close by. The park is also home to the world famous Naval Warfare Battle, a miniature sea battle that is re-enacted with model warships and has entertained many children over the years. The market towns of Pickering, Malton, Driffield and Beverley are also worth visiting during your stay. Each have busy market days as well as lots of little independent shops and cafés. Paddock House is a beautiful detached, stone-built bungalow situated in Middleham, Wensleydale, nestled away peacefully just behind Middleham village square. The property feels warm and welcoming no matter what the weather. There’s ample private parking at the property with a double garage that can be used for storage. It is an excellent property which is exceptionally large and offers plenty of space for all family members. There are two living rooms and the bedrooms offer a great combination for sleeping arrangements with a super kingsize, two zip and link super kingsize beds that can be made up as singles on request, and a double sofa bed. Hairdryers are available. There is a double vanity unit in bedroom 1’s en-suite bathroom, and a single vanity unit in the main bathroom. The bungalow is perfect for that family or group get together. Step out of the patio doors from the living room into a beautiful landscaped garden and patio, a lovely outside place to entertain or simply take in the stunning views. Beyond the garden is an enclosed paddock, which can be used by guests to enjoy when it is not being grazed by sheep.
This ideal location is within 2 minutes of restaurants, pubs, cafés, small independent shops and local village store. Middleham is renowned for its castle, formerly home to Richard III, and several race horse stables. A fabulous sight to watch as the horses are led through the village each day up onto the gallops. Wensleydale is awash with beautiful scenery and pretty villages making Paddock House a superb place to stay and explore the Yorkshire Dales and its attractions. Shop, pub and restaurant 200 yards.

Close to the village of Goathland, Ivy Cottage is a luxurious, large, semi-detached cottage with fabulous views of the surrounding countryside. The original building dates back to the 1800s and has been renovated to a high standard with a modern décor. The living room offers a warming multi-fuel burner, perfect for relaxing in front of after a day of exploration, and the study/games room is stocked with books, board games and a games console for a bit of family fun. The garden room key aspect is the opening of the 3x bi-folding doors onto large decked areas for an amazing outside living experience. The ground floor bedroom and en-suite wet room is ideal for less mobile guests and also has 3x bi-folding doors out onto the decked areas with views over spacious gardens and the North York Moors Railway. Three more bedrooms can be found on the first floor, one offering en-suite facilities, as well as a large family bathroom.

Ivy Cottage is situated just outside the hamlet of Beck Hole, one of Yorkshire’s best kept secrets, and just outside the village of Goathland from the ’Heartbeat’ TV show fame. This stunning cottage is just a short walk from one of the smallest pubs in the UK, known for its traditional ales and warm friendly welcome. Stunning valleys and sweeping hillside views can be enjoyed from this idyllic location as can the many cycle tracks, bridle paths and walkways all from the doorstep.

Nearby Whitby is increasingly popular with holidaymakers all year round as it has something to offer all the family, including 3 miles of golden sandy beach, donkey rides and ice creams. Climb the 199 steps to the gothic Whitby Abbey, which was made famous by Bram Stoker’s ’Dracula’, or take a stroll along the cobbled streets taking in some of the older parts of town with its jet stone boutiques. Whitby has an up and coming foody scene too, with everything from Michelin star restaurants and award-winning fish and chips, to tea rooms and family friendly pubs, many of which are dog friendly. There is also a golf course nearby and many boats offering tourist trips out to sea in search of seals, dolphins and even minke whales in the right season.

The Yorkshire Heritage Coast is dotted with hidden gems such as Staithes and Runswick Bay to the north, and Robin Hood’s Bay to the south. Robin Hood’s Bay can be reached along the Cinder Track walk and cycle way, and the Cleveland Way also makes its way along the tops of cliffs and into some of the bays, offering superb photo opportunities along its path. The North York Moors National Park is right on the doorstep, with its hundreds of walking routes which take in the Falling Foss Waterfall and The Moors National Park Centre. Beach 9 miles. The semi-detached cottage has had a newly fitted kitchen in 2022 and sits within the grounds of the owner’s home just a short walk from one of the smallest pubs in the UK, known for its traditional ales and warm friendly welcome. Beck Hole is located deep in the valley with the holiday cottage overlooking the village just a short stroll from the local pub. Stunning valleys and sweeping hillside views can be enjoyed from the idyllic location of the cottage. You could almost be anywhere in the world, close your eyes and listen to the silence interrupted only by bird song. Cycle tracks, bridle paths and walkways abound from the doorstep with quaint little villages popping up when you least expect it.
It is just 1 mile from the well-known village of Goathland best known for its connections with Heartbeat, indeed Hill Farm in which The Dairy sits was used for many of the film shoots. The village green is lined with quaint curio shops, inns and tea rooms serving some of Yorkshire’s finest cuisine. You can board the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Train here and take a memorable journey through the glorious Esk Valley as it steams its way across the valleys into the historic market town of Pickering. The ancient sea port of Whitby is just a short drive over the moors, eight miles, a colourful harbour leads to the three mile stretch of sandy beach overlooked and almost protected by the ancient abbey ruins and St Mary’s church. The brave (and fit) can take the 199 steps up to the abbey ruins where panoramic views over Whitby across to Sandsend can be enjoyed. Explore the smugglers coves of Robin Hoods Bay, Runswick Bay and Staithes or visit the more elegant seaside resort of Scarborough, Britain’s first ever seaside resort. Tucked away in the peaceful village of Felixkirk, this cosy, dog-friendly holiday cottage adjoins the owner’s home and provides a very comfortable rural retreat on the very edge of the North York Moors National Park, near Thirsk. This brick-built, single-storey cottage is a hidden gem offering a very private stay whilst enjoying an enviable position near to the award-winning, dog-friendly pub and is 5 minutes by car from the nearby market town of Thirsk. It has been completely renovated internally in December 2019 and externally over the summer of 2020.
The cottage offers beautifully presented accommodation for two guests and their pets. There is a small double bedroom with under-bed storage. There is extensive garden space outside the cottage with stunning views, which is also fully fenced to allow your pets to wander in a contained area. Access to a larger field is also provided. Car parking for two cars is available next to the cottage, which is at the end of a private tarmac and gravelled driveway. There is also separate secure storage available for bicycles.
The owners are keen walkers, runners and cyclists and can advise of lovely local and regional routes and provide local dog-friendly walk guides for your use. From the doorstep, there are numerous footpaths and cycling trails and the renowned, traditional, dog-friendly village inn serves local produce just minutes from the cottage. The village is home to a 4x4 driving centre which offers action-packed days with off-road driver training and quad biking, and at Sutton Bank, visitors can take a trial lesson at the Yorkshire Gliding Club and visit the nearby famous White Horse near Kilburn. Thirsk, 3 miles away, is a quaint market town famous for its connections with James Herriot, the well-known vet and author of ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. Thirsk is also home to a well-known racecourse and 15th century church.
Days out can be enjoyed at Rievaulx Abbey near the wonderful town of Helmsley, as well as Castle Howard and Fountains Abbey. Board the steam train at Pickering to be transported through the stunning North York Moors to the coastal port of Whitby and explore the fishing villages at Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes. The North Yorkshire Moors and also the Yorkshire Dales are easily accessible by car and the historic walled city of York is only 25 miles away, with its iconic minster, exquisite architecture, museums and art galleries, and is not to be missed when visiting Yorkshire. Situated at Staithes, near Whitby, these former World War I army bunkers are in an idyllic position close to the countryside and sea. Four of the barracks have been ingeniously and tastefully transformed to provide good quality accommodation retaining much rustic character and charm. The remaining four lodges retain their near original condition as a visual reminder of their former function. Each refurbished lodge has the added advantage of free parking, an outdoor sitting area and bike parking racks.
Situated just off the Cleveland Way, there are many fine moorland and cliff top walks. There is a golf course and driving range in Brotton, 6¾ miles away, and at Scaling Reservoir, 7¼ miles, there is sailing and fishing. There is a leisure centre 2 miles down the road and a 2-minute stroll down the cobbled street brings you to the centre of the picturesque fishing village with its small harbour nestling beneath rugged cliffs. Step back in time and walk the quaint narrow passages, as Captain James Cook himself must have done. Here in Staithes there are village shops, pubs, cafés and a restaurant, and in 2020 the village was featured on the BBC programme ’Gone Christmas Fishing’ with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer. Why not travel on Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express (the North Yorkshire Moors Railway) through ’Heartbeat’ country, or visit Whitby and its famous abbey which is 11 miles away.
