    Just 10 miles away to the east lies the wonderful North Yorkshire coastline. Filey has a wide sandy beach which shelves gently into the sea, whilst the resort of Scarborough, popular with families, offers an excellent choice of restaurants and a theatre. Scarborough is also home to the biggest, fastest and funniest waterpark in the UK, Alpamare Waterpark, ideal for serious adrenaline junkies and is fun for all the family with space to relax and unwind. Magnificent Flamborough Head with its bird sanctuary is 18 miles. The historic sea port of Whitby (25 miles), where the legendary Captain Cook learned his trade, has a beautiful marina. The old town is a jumble of narrow streets, with ancient houses and little craft shops, and above the town, high on a headland, are the jagged ruins of Whitby Abbey, still an impressive sight. The Spital Craft Centre in Staxton, 2 miles, serves up a lovely Sunday carvery, and features Victorian streets with hairdressers, a beauty shop, village store, deli bakery and a tearoom. It’s open everyday and there is free parking. Almost opposite the craft centre is an award-winning fish restaurant which also provides takeaways.
    Inland is the market town of Malton, where a museum houses finds from the Roman camp which once stood here. Five miles to the west, Castle Howard, one of England’s grandest houses, is well worth a visit. Surrounded by magnificent parkland, it contains fine furniture and paintings, as well as Britain’s largest private collection of dress from the 17th-century to the present day. The attractive town of Pickering at the southern foot of the moors, is home to the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway, which travels across Heartbeat country. The city of York can be reached in an hour or so, with its superb museums, excellent shops and splendid minster. Flamingo Land and Ayton Castle are also nearby. There is an excellent golf course at Ganton (2 miles) and first-class riding stables at Snainton (7 miles). Good pubs and restaurants can be found in the surrounding villages and there is a farm shop in Potter Brompton and another one just 1 mile away. Village shop 1 mile, supermarket 3 miles.

    This stunning stone-built house is the ideal choice for families and friends looking for somewhere special for their stay by the coast. Stepping inside into a spacious hallway, there is a picture of Captain Cook – who began his voyages from the harbour here. You then enter a contemporary living area where there is a well-equipped, navy-blue, nautical shaker-style kitchen and dining area for 8-10 people. You can sit at the Captain’s table and enjoy your full English Breakfast or your teatime fish and chips, or maybe cook a fine dining dinner for you and your guests. The lounge at the bottom of the hallway features a fabulous, whitewashed wood fireplace with cast iron electric fire. Decorated in seaside tones of aqua navy and white, with solid white oak painted furniture, this is a cosy space with leather sofas where you have a view over the private enclosed garden - from here you can see the top of Sneaton Castle which is only a 3-minute walk away. Sneaton Castle has a wonderful restaurant and bar, where you can enjoy meals in beautiful surroundings either inside the castle itself or out in the grounds. You have a flagged patio sitting out area in the garden, where you can enjoy the afternoon sun, here you can relax after a long day out at the beach or sightseeing. The adjoining garage can be used for bike or surfboard storage and doubles as a games room.
    After a busy day exploring you can retire upstairs to the bedrooms, each one beautifully presented. The master bedroom has a solid oak super king bed, Smart TV and an en-suite bathroom, and there is a further kingsize room, both of these rooms have ceiling fans to keep you cool on hot summer evenings. The third bedroom has a double bed, and the fourth bedroom has bunk beds with an additional trundle bed which can be pulled out (sleeps 3).

    You are perfectly positioned to enjoy the delights Whitby has to offer, only a short walk away from the Westcliff, with the golden (dog-friendly) beach below stretching all the way to neighbouring Sandsend. You can also walk into the town centre with an abundance of cafes, bars, and independent shops, which is just a mile away, or hop onto the convenient bus. Whitby is steeped in history, with the Whitby Abbey on the headland, a cobbled historic old town, and the pretty harbour. Take a trip on the heritage steam train, soak up the history in one of the museums or enjoy the sea air and stunning vistas on a boat trip. Further along the coast you have delightful bays and coastal villages to discover before returning to your idyllic holiday home.
