Visit the seaside town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, just a short drive away and boasting the oldest water balanced, funicular cliff tramway in Great Britain alongside great restaurants and beaches.

The village of Loftus has good amenities, including three pubs, a Gin palace with micro-brewery, local grocery shops, bakery and an award winning bookshop stocking plenty of local authors and gifts. In the ‘Iron Valley’ of Skinningrove you’ll find secluded beaches and The Tom Leonard Mining Museum.

Enjoy the fishing port of Whitby, with its winding cobbled streets, famous abbey and wonderful fish and chips, or explore the spectacular coastline and dramatic North York Moors. The area surrounding this Yorkshire cottage offers a wealth of attractions including the steam railway at Grosmont, the pretty market towns of Pickering and Helmsley and stately homes and gardens such as Castle Howard. The Yorkshire Wolds, one of Britain’s best kept secrets, runs to the south of the village, and there is miles and miles of long countryside walks. The North Yorkshire Moors and the east coast are just a short drive away, and the seaside resorts of Filey and Scarborough have great beaches for the family for that traditional seaside holiday. Within the hour you can be in the city of York with its abundance of renowned attractions, including the iconic Minster, Castle Museum and the Jorvik Viking Centre. This cosy detached cottage making a romantic retreat, is Grade II listed and dates back to 1760. It has been tastefully renovated to a very good standard and benefits from an underfloor heated limestone tiled floor throughout the ground floor. Outside there is a large, enclosed, riverside garden, on the opposite side of a road that leads directly into the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. It has a shared patio with a sitting-out area, a further riverside secluded seating area, garden furniture, BBQ and summerhouse. Although shared with the owners it is available to guests and their pets to enjoy at all times. Within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, East Ayton is a village just a few minutes’ drive from the seafront at Scarborough. The village has all the amenities you could wish for with a post office, shop, garage and local pub as well as an excellent fish restaurant. The cottage is just off the main street on the lane leading further into the National Park and towards Hackness. This property is an ideal place for the walkers or cyclists amongst you, with great trails right on your doorstep. From the large riverside orchard garden there are open views across the valley to the castle that dates back to 1390. Cycling is also very popular in the area as this forms part of the Tour de Yorkshire route. The Dalby Forest is close by with cycle trails for all abilities and home to the World Cup Trail, a challenging 4 mile route, or for beginners, there are plenty more leisurely routes. The cottage is an ideal base to visit all that Yorkshire has to offer from the North Yorkshire Moors to the Wolds and the beautiful east coast, and coarse fishing is available direct onto the River Derwent at the bottom of the garden with brown trout and grayling. The area is a delight for walkers and cyclists alike, with an abundance of routes to choose from that take in the breathtaking scenery that can be found in all directions. Enjoy a countryside walk, right from your doorstep, down into nearby Staithes and joining onto the Cleveland Way as it snakes across cliff tops and down into hidden coves and bays. Staithes is popular with tourists and has a number of traditional pubs, a coffee shop and even its own independent art gallery. It has a fascinating history of pirates and smugglers, as well as links to Captain Cook who worked here as a child. Nearby Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a fabulous up and coming holiday destination with plenty of places to eat and drink as well as a pier, and is well known in the area as a surfer’s paradise with a number of schools for those wanting to give it a try. There is also horse riding, fishing at Scaling Dam and golf nearby.
The Gothic town of Whitby is just 13 miles away and is famous for its links to Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It offers a hectic schedule of festivals and events all year round including the Goth Weekend, Folk Week and its own Regatta, as well as cobbled streets full of independent shops and traders. The Whitby Abbey towers over the town and can be reached by climbing the famous 199 steps and affords fantastic views of the town and out to sea. There are plenty of traditional dog friendly pubs with live music, tea rooms and delis, as well as some fantastic places to eat. Why not catch a tourist boat out to sea in search of minke whales and seals, or enjoy a trip on the steam train that snakes its way through the National Park into Heartbeat Country. There are plenty of seaside towns and villages to explore along this dramatic coastline, or take a trip to the walled city of York with its many attractions.
