Dog Friendly Lodges North Yorkshire

Set in a small hamlet, these carefully converted holiday cottages form a courtyard development where every care has been taken with the design, internal furnishings and their impact on the environment. Bell’s Barn (prop ref 25899) stands detached from the other cottages and is suitable for wheelchair users. There is also enclosed paddock where your dogs can run free! Just a short walk from Crakehall, claimed to be one of the prettiest villages in the Dales, with a large village green overlooked by an imposing manor house where cricket and quoits teams often play. Nearby, the historic town of Bedale, 2½ miles, offers a weekly market every Tuesday and various events during the year, together with a range of individual shops, restaurants and pubs. Masham, renowned for the Black Sheep Brewery, is 10 minutes’ drive and Richmond with its Norman castle, Georgian architecture and thriving theatre is also easily accessible. Historic York and its many attractions is within easy driving distance. Alternatively, just enjoy the wonderful Yorkshire countryside either by car, bicycle or on foot. Shop and pub ¾ mile. Situated at Staithes, near Whitby, these former World War I army bunkers are in an idyllic position close to the countryside and sea. Four of the barracks have been ingeniously and tastefully transformed to provide good quality accommodation retaining much rustic character and charm. The remaining four lodges retain their near original condition as a visual reminder of their former function. Each refurbished lodge has the added advantage of free parking, an outdoor sitting area and bike parking racks.
Situated just off the Cleveland Way, there are many fine moorland and cliff top walks. There is a golf course and driving range in Brotton, 6¾ miles away, and at Scaling Reservoir, 7¼ miles, there is sailing and fishing. There is a leisure centre 2 miles down the road and a 2-minute stroll down the cobbled street brings you to the centre of the picturesque fishing village with its small harbour nestling beneath rugged cliffs. Step back in time and walk the quaint narrow passages, as Captain James Cook himself must have done. Here in Staithes there are village shops, pubs, cafés and a restaurant, and in 2020 the village was featured on the BBC programme ’Gone Christmas Fishing’ with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer. Why not travel on Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express (the North Yorkshire Moors Railway) through ’Heartbeat’ country, or visit Whitby and its famous abbey which is 11 miles away.

Created from old farm buildings and retaining original features, including exposed brickwork and beams, these single-storey holiday cottages (refs 26225 and 29452) enjoy views over open countryside. Privately situated in the grounds of the owners’ home, each one has its own south facing patio where visitors can relax and watch the pet sheep, hens and Shetland ponies as they graze in the adjoining paddock in this peaceful village close to the River Derwent. The historic city of York, famous for its cobbled streets, magnificent minster, museums, restaurants and traditional inns, is easily accessible with the Grimston park and ride just a 10 minute drive away. Close by are the Yorkshire Wolds, which inspired the renowned paintings of David Hockney and the Howardian Hills, excellent for walking and cycling. The coastal resorts of Bridlington, Scarborough and Whitby and the North York Moors are all within an hour’s drive. Visit National Trust properties and stately homes at Castle Howard, Sledmere and Burton Agnes and quaint market towns at Malton, Easingwold and Pickering. Shop, pub and restaurant 2½ miles.

Tucked away in the peaceful village of Felixkirk, this cosy, dog-friendly holiday cottage adjoins the owner’s home and provides a very comfortable rural retreat on the very edge of the North York Moors National Park, near Thirsk. This brick-built, single-storey cottage is a hidden gem offering a very private stay whilst enjoying an enviable position near to the award-winning, dog-friendly pub and is 5 minutes by car from the nearby market town of Thirsk. It has been completely renovated internally in December 2019 and externally over the summer of 2020.
The cottage offers beautifully presented accommodation for two guests and their pets. There is a small double bedroom with under-bed storage. There is extensive garden space outside the cottage with stunning views, which is also fully fenced to allow your pets to wander in a contained area. Access to a larger field is also provided. Car parking for two cars is available next to the cottage, which is at the end of a private tarmac and gravelled driveway. There is also separate secure storage available for bicycles.
The owners are keen walkers, runners and cyclists and can advise of lovely local and regional routes and provide local dog-friendly walk guides for your use. From the doorstep, there are numerous footpaths and cycling trails and the renowned, traditional, dog-friendly village inn serves local produce just minutes from the cottage. The village is home to a 4x4 driving centre which offers action-packed days with off-road driver training and quad biking, and at Sutton Bank, visitors can take a trial lesson at the Yorkshire Gliding Club and visit the nearby famous White Horse near Kilburn. Thirsk, 3 miles away, is a quaint market town famous for its connections with James Herriot, the well-known vet and author of ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. Thirsk is also home to a well-known racecourse and 15th century church.
Days out can be enjoyed at Rievaulx Abbey near the wonderful town of Helmsley, as well as Castle Howard and Fountains Abbey. Board the steam train at Pickering to be transported through the stunning North York Moors to the coastal port of Whitby and explore the fishing villages at Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes. The North Yorkshire Moors and also the Yorkshire Dales are easily accessible by car and the historic walled city of York is only 25 miles away, with its iconic minster, exquisite architecture, museums and art galleries, and is not to be missed when visiting Yorkshire. Owl Cottage is a lovely semi-detached barn conversion and is one of five holiday cottages set around a central courtyard at Holtby Grange, just outside the small village of Holtby and only 5 miles from York city centre. Hidden down a long private drive and surrounded by open countryside with far-reaching views, this one bedroomed property offers a very high level of guest comfort and luxurious extras for a couple. The entrance to the property is from the main courtyard which has beautifully trimmed boxed hedges and a koi carp pond. With shared seating, this area offers a real sense of peace and tranquillity. Upon entering the property you are straight into the open plan kitchen/dining room/living room. With a feature brick wall, contemporary wood burner and vaulted ceiling, not to mention the oak kitchen covered with granite worktops, Belfast sink and high end cooking appliances, this property will not disappoint. The chef in the family will certainly enjoy cooking in this kitchen. The wow factor continues into the bedroom with a kingsize and a high quality mattress and bedding, you are assured a peaceful nights sleep. The wet room is huge with an accessible shower, safety handle and fixed seating. Outside there is a large enclosed garden shared between all the cottages offering a shaded wooded area, summerhouse with seating, garden paths and a central pond which is surrounded by a fence. The property owner lives on-site and there is car parking for two cars and bike storage is also available.
