Steeped in history, Middleham Castle was once the home of Richard III and its remains are a popular attraction for tourists. Also well known for its horse racing links, guests will be able to watch the world class racehorses being ridden through the centre of Middleham and out into ’the gallops’ at the edge of the village. The barn is also close to East Witton, a quiet village with two pubs and from which you can enjoy a pleasant, low level walk to Jervaulx Abbey.

Jervaulx Abbey was once a great Cistercian monastery and is certainly worth a visit to explore the history and also to enjoy a spot of lunch in the popular tea rooms. A little further afield but still within walking distance, guests will find footpaths leading up hills and down dales, through natural, unspoilt woodland and open countryside, to many attractive Yorkshire towns and villages situated just a few miles away. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty really does offer some of the most magnificent scenery and stunning views, and should be visited at all times of the year just to appreciate the sheer beauty of the landscape. Guests will find an abundance of top quality local inns and restaurants offering fresh, local produce and comfortable surroundings. The Forbidden Corner is only a few miles away and really must be explored by guests of all ages. This once private folly is now open as an attraction to the public and offers guests a fun filled day out with twists and turns round every corner. A little further afield but still within an hour’s drive, guests will be able to visit popular destinations including Ripon, Aysgarth Falls, York, Thirsk, Northallerton, Hawes, Barnard Castle, Richmond and Durham. The area is a delight for walkers and cyclists alike, with an abundance of routes to choose from that take in the breathtaking scenery that can be found in all directions. Enjoy a countryside walk, right from your doorstep, down into nearby Staithes and joining onto the Cleveland Way as it snakes across cliff tops and down into hidden coves and bays. Staithes is popular with tourists and has a number of traditional pubs, a coffee shop and even its own independent art gallery. It has a fascinating history of pirates and smugglers, as well as links to Captain Cook who worked here as a child. Nearby Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a fabulous up and coming holiday destination with plenty of places to eat and drink as well as a pier, and is well known in the area as a surfer’s paradise with a number of schools for those wanting to give it a try. This delightful, Grade II listed, former chapel, adjacent to the owners’ home, is steeped in history and is tucked away in a wonderful, rural location in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. As such, it enjoys beautiful views over spectacular countryside. The cottage provides romantic holiday accommodation and offers a wonderful home from which to walk direct from the door, with links along the Dales Way between Grassington and Kettlewell. For those who like climbing, Kilnsey Crag is at hand, and offers some of the most challenging climbs in the area. Alternatively, Grassington is approximately 4 miles, and has a wide variety of country shops, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants. In summer, you can enjoy Grassington Festival, which attracts well-known celebrities, and during winter it offers the Dickensian Festival. Shop 3 miles.

Originally built in 1825 as a ruin, this unique Grade II listed building has been sympathetically transformed into two lovely, detached gatehouses yet retaining all the visual appearances of a ruin.
